Aibu about this trend for young girls

I keep seeing teen girls about in my town wearing super short tight dresses (usually black), sometimes skirt and crop top with lots of flesh on show. The dresses are made out of material similar to leggings. The bit that gets me though is they wear it with trainers! Sports trainers!

It looks horrible in my opinion. Is this a trend? Where did it come from?

Maybe I'm getting old... I'm pretty sure my mum didn't get the trouser skirt combo I used to wear. Grin

It's just I don't get the "nice" dress paired with trainers. To me it's like wearing heels with jogging pants... not a good look.

I thought this thread was going to be about something like sexting - not young women wearing sensible shoes Confused

Although I'd really like to see teenagers creating their own fashion, rather than copying their parents all the time.

TheNaze73 · 22/04/2017 18:05

You sound about 90 OP Grin

hellokittymania · 22/04/2017 18:08

It may look odd with address, but trainers are so comfortable. I wear mine with dresses a lot of the time since I walk everywhere.

hellokittymania · 22/04/2017 18:09

A dress sorry using dictation

kirstxx · 22/04/2017 18:12

At 24 I still occasionally wear a dress and black trainers/converse style (not high tops) because I am useless in heels [grins]
I wear smarter shoes or heels if the occasion calls but what's the point if you can be comfy!
Not so much of the skin on show these days but I still wear fugue hugging midi dresses

kirstxx · 22/04/2017 18:12

Figure^ silly phone

RJnomore1 · 22/04/2017 18:13

I'm off out tonight in a biba dress abdxmy gazelles

stevie69 · 22/04/2017 18:20

Stevie - grin I've never got married but I'd probably do the same!

Mrs G, I've got to 50 and never been married but I reserve the right to give it a go if my prince should wander across my path. And I'd definitely wear my Converse.

Stay happy Smile

Stevie xxxx

I think a pretty, smart dress can look fab dressed down with white trainers! I'm 42...

NotALottaPot · 23/04/2017 17:00

No, the socks over jeans thing was definitely not a country/riding thing. Just regular socks and half a jean bottom sort of tucked in at the back. Kind of like in the photo but with only the back half of the bottom of the jeans if that makes sense. I think we can all agree that it looks ridiculous and thankfully the fashion seemed short-lived as nowadays nobody is doing it anymore.

I still do nice dress and converse at 29 Grin

MrsCharlieD · 23/04/2017 17:18

I often wear my vans with dresses. As an adult we're not supposed to get teen fashion. I used to wear Dr martens with dresses in the 90s.

minisoksmakehardwork · 23/04/2017 17:22

Dresses with gazelles and other, similar trainers look fine. If it's karimoor or similar running shoes, not such a good look imo. But then I'm a jeans and cons girl at 36 so what do I know.

Xmasbaby11 · 23/04/2017 17:25

I had to google gazelles, so, I am officially past it.

All sounds good to me. Dress and trainers is hardly novel. I was too fat to be part of fashion when I was younger (41 now), but I like seeing what young people are wearing.

"It didn't look good or quirky, just like an embarrassing mistake.

It didn't look good to you, or to me, but I don't think we are the people they are dressing for."

Wise words spoken here.

corythatwas · 23/04/2017 17:38

And for further wise words, let us turn to my favourite Dowager Countess:

"Oh, my dear, in my time I wore the crinoline, the bustle and the leg-of-mutton sleeve. I'm not in a strong position to criticise."

(Lady Violet in series 3, Christmas episode of Downton Abbey)

haveacupoftea · 23/04/2017 17:41

I am jealous of those slim little things getting to run around in nice dresses and trainers Grin

Summerisdone · 23/04/2017 18:36

I often wear trainers with short skirts and dresses, it's a very easy way of making an outfit casual. I really took to the look when I was a teenager and Lily Allen first came about and I've worn this style ever since.

It means I get more wear out of my clothes too as I can dress the same outfit up with a nice pair of heels and I'm ready for a night out Wink

Wow2806 · 23/04/2017 22:19

Some girls wear trainers with dresses because they cant wear shoes due to cerebal palsy... so therefore impossible and/or painful to wear shoes/heels etc.

Very judgy... You need to pull your knickers up to your chin

Wow2806 · 23/04/2017 22:23

And to add a friends daughter who is at uni often gets rejected from nightclubs because of her trainers

In actual fact its all she can wear due to severe problems.. She must have lots of different styles... but no matter how carefully she dresses still gets refused (shock)

Zoflorabore · 23/04/2017 22:27

Where do you live op? I have a teen ds and see a lot of his friends and have not seen this type of clothing combo at all, maybe it's not stylish here ( Liverpool)

It's all tight tight ripped up to the crotch jeans and jewel coloured pumps, usually sparkly gold or silver.

superram · 23/04/2017 22:33

I have been wearing superstars and dresses since 1993, I was on trend then and now-probably horribly unfashionable in the intervening years..... I don't care as I am now old.

Monkeydust · 23/04/2017 22:39

Shit I think Ive realised I'm getting old. This is the first sign isn't it. Soon I won't know any of the top ten in the iTunes chart

I hate the teen fashion atm I dont get it nor do I know the top ten on itune and im only 24

BadToTheBone · 23/04/2017 22:39

That's how my 11 yo dd has been out today, not a super tight dress but a dress and trainers. I used to wear them in my teens and I'm 50. Not new at all.

Ham69 · 23/04/2017 22:39

I used to wear doc martins, kickers and similar with "nice" dresses. My dm was chuffed at my sensible footwear choice after winklepickers crippled her feet. I'd actively encourage my DS when she's a teen to wear comfy trainers with dresses. Why not? Very odd post!
