Aibu about this trend for young girls

I keep seeing teen girls about in my town wearing super short tight dresses (usually black), sometimes skirt and crop top with lots of flesh on show. The dresses are made out of material similar to leggings. The bit that gets me though is they wear it with trainers! Sports trainers!

It looks horrible in my opinion. Is this a trend? Where did it come from?

Maybe I'm getting old... I'm pretty sure my mum didn't get the trouser skirt combo I used to wear. Grin

It's just I don't get the "nice" dress paired with trainers. To me it's like wearing heels with jogging pants... not a good look.

I was pregnant in 1991 and my maternity wear consisted of black leggings, black lycra mini skirt, black vest or body and big arse high top trainers

T-shirts?

Don't you mean stripey breton tops? Wink

Surely part of being a teenager is to generate pictures that will embarrass you for a lifetime? Trainers much better than stilettos at least.
I am profoundly grateful that there was no FB when I was a teenager. Grin

Trills · 22/04/2017 10:35

When I was a teenager I would have worn cheap rubbish but it was just not that cheap. I'm sure New Look prices have not gone up in 20 years. And Primark didn't have anything good in it.

NotReallyMeToday · 22/04/2017 10:36

Oh god, I wish I could get away with bum skimming lycra these days. misses point

donajimena · 22/04/2017 10:36

Fila trainers black tights and hotpants! I looked the dogs bollocks.. or so I thought

NotYoda · 22/04/2017 10:44

happypoobum · 22/04/2017 10:47

This isn't new at all.

types whilst wearing gazelles and a denim dress

EmNetta · 22/04/2017 10:55

When I was first widowed, and considering dating again, a more experienced friend advised "Wear something you can run in" - maybe the kids have worked this out too.

corythatwas · 22/04/2017 10:55

The only really silly trend I'd like to see done away with is heels and stilettos for growing young women. Damaging your back and feet because somewhere, decades ago, it was decided that this particular combination was somehow "appropriate" or "smart". It's hardly written in our DNA, is it?

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 22/04/2017 10:58

No generation will ever look as amazing as when we wore stonewashed, baggy, jeans with pictures of Fred Flintstone on one leg and Barney Rubble on the other.

We were spoilt.

Astro55 · 22/04/2017 11:02

The dress / trainer combo was surely started by 3 year olds?

C8H10N4O2 · 22/04/2017 11:03

Hah - I raise you outfits including bin liners and green hair Grin

Oh gods am I glad there was no facebook

NameSame · 22/04/2017 11:08

Wow. Sounds perfect to me. I have a white pair of superga trainers that I wear with denim skirts or joules bodycon dresses. It's fine. Comfy, practical and much more casual than all out glam.

KERALA1 · 22/04/2017 11:11

I disapprove of leggings without a long bum covering top because they expose everything and look terrible even on stunning youngsters.

I keep these thought in my head though for fear of sounding about 95

Laniakea · 22/04/2017 11:26

I'm wearing a t-shirt dress, ds1's crocs & a poncho ... now that is a look Grin

(I'm sort of gardening)

metalmum15 · 22/04/2017 11:48

Sorry Trills you're right.

Get yourself to Boden immediately.

megletthesecond · 22/04/2017 11:50

What's wrong with it? BodyCon clothes and trainers are comfy and practical.

stevie69 · 22/04/2017 11:55

It's the trainer/"nice dress" combo. It just doesn't look right to me. It's like when you see people commuting to work in their suits and trainers. They have proper shoes at the office.

Not all of us: I just keep my comfy trainers on with my smart office suit Shock; there again I wear my dresses with Doc Marts or Converse ...

I have no sense of fashion, granted; but I'm happy Smile

user1489179512 · 22/04/2017 11:57

It's a fashion and it's a nice look for teens.

MrsGotobed · 22/04/2017 11:59

Makes more sense than wearing stupidly high heels IMO but then again I've never been a heels person.

DD and her friends wore Converse under their prom dresses!

TizzyDongue · 22/04/2017 12:00

Babycon and trainers was definitely a thing in the 90s. It must have passed you by OP.

Personally I like the look, I wear pumps, 'runners' or boots with pretty dresses and I'm in my 40s. Good job I like it as I've Teri le feet and heels over two inches just can't be done

stevie69 · 22/04/2017 12:01

DD and her friends wore Converse under their prom dresses!

Respect Grin I'd wear mine under my wedding dress.

Laniakea · 22/04/2017 12:03

winter = tea dresses, cardi, thick tights & DMs (with a duffle coat)
summer = short dress & trainers

That was my uniform through the 90s. 16yo DD does similar tbh except she goes for 50s dresses with her DMs & very short skirts rather than dresses with her trainers. What goes around.

Almost anything is preferable to skinnies & a Breton top.
