Aibu about this trend for young girls

I keep seeing teen girls about in my town wearing super short tight dresses (usually black), sometimes skirt and crop top with lots of flesh on show. The dresses are made out of material similar to leggings. The bit that gets me though is they wear it with trainers! Sports trainers!

It looks horrible in my opinion. Is this a trend? Where did it come from?

Maybe I'm getting old... I'm pretty sure my mum didn't get the trouser skirt combo I used to wear. Grin

It's just I don't get the "nice" dress paired with trainers. To me it's like wearing heels with jogging pants... not a good look.

So you wear a uniform of jeans and trainers but you resent teenagers following a trend?

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 22/04/2017 09:24

They sound super stylish to me. I love that look where the shoes and outfit are totally different.
We are going to a wedding next week. Dd had a lovely posh frock in navy with a big skirt and flowers on it. She wants to wear her blue dm boots with it.
I think it's great. Love it when people break Clothing rules and wear the unexpected. Cool and stylish.

Wedrine4me · 22/04/2017 09:25

Aren't pretty dresses being worn with ankle boots also a thing now?

FluffyMcCloud · 22/04/2017 09:26

I wear trainers with dresses all the time. I'm far from being a teenager.

TheMildManneredMilitant · 22/04/2017 09:28

Presumably they feel good in it, with the added benefit of being able to run for the bus. They don't dress to please us oldies and why should they? But then I'm the type who will also wear bright pink running trainers with a suit for the commute and couldn't care less if it looks 'wrong'. (Also have a pair of dms, maybe I haven't grown up).

FriendTillTheEnd · 22/04/2017 09:29

Lime I wouldn't worry.

I'm 42. As I said, I still wear DMs with floral dresses and I haven't known what was in the top ten since I was about 16.

I wouldn't worry about it Wink

Lime19 · 22/04/2017 09:30

I think we are not on same page about the type of dress. Floral dress and dms is lovely! Tshirts dress and converse is great. Etc etc. These dresses are made of Lycra and very thin and barely cover the bum!

I am flummoxed. Dresses and trainers is obvious to me. Cons or more sporty New Balance ones here.

museumum · 22/04/2017 09:33

Sounds like the outfits ginger spice wore in 1997. Really nothing new at all.

RandomDent · 22/04/2017 09:34

iTunes is old hat, I'm told. It's Spotify I think. :)

I loved the skirt/trousers look. I'd wear it now if I could.

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 22/04/2017 09:35

Good forthem. No sore feet, blisters etc...

GavelRavel · 22/04/2017 09:36

I used to dress like this going clubbing in the late 80s early 90s. seems perfectly normal to me and much better for your legs and feet.

Littledrummergirl · 22/04/2017 09:37

I'm actually fashionable??? I usually wear dresses and sling some trainers on if popping out of the house, much more comfortable. I've been doing this for twenty plus years though. Grin

BarbaraofSeville · 22/04/2017 09:38

Another 40 something grunger that never stopped wearing tea dresses, leggings and biker boots in my case.

Agree with those who say it's a good thing that girls and women are wearing comfortable, practical shoes instead of crippling themselves with heels and being less likely to be able to run away from an unsafe situation.

SuburbanRhonda · 22/04/2017 09:43

Ok, so your latest post suggests your not really bothered about the dress and trainers combo, just the dresses, because they are Lycra and fitted.

You sound like Mary Whitehouse.

HoneyDragon · 22/04/2017 09:45

I wore a tight shirt dress and trainers over Easter. Bodycon and trainers is fine.

I am nearing 40 and I would much rather wear trainers with a dress.(or hell any item of clothing!) Yet when I was a teen(and up to mid 20s)I never ever owned a pair of trainers!
I think it looks so much better than teens staggering about in heel they simply cannot wear-especially the-what I call-Porn star shoes!

worriedme04 · 22/04/2017 09:46

honeydragon
Which one are you? Wink

AskBasil · 22/04/2017 09:48

I think it's brilliant that girls are wearing trainers as a fashion thing.

Anything that stops them damaging their precious bodies is fine by me.

HoneyDragon · 22/04/2017 09:48

Oh and the reason the dresses look cheap is because they will be. They are teenagers.

A cheap dress and feeling a million dollars is always going to be more fun than excitedly blowing £250 in Fat Face and realising you look like you fell out a Littlewoods catalogue, we've all made a similar mistake negotiating getting older. Grin

HoneyDragon · 22/04/2017 09:51

Worried The unpictured short one with a terrible muffin top, wobbly arse, and crows feet who has no fucks to give and wears what she likes Wink

coldcanary · 22/04/2017 09:53

If I could get away with a bodycon dress and trainers without looking like a sack of spuds going for a run I would absolutely wear it!
As a teen I had a 'uniform' of short Lycra skirts, jumpers and pe pumps until I went Goth, it wasn't too dissimilar to the pics further up.

Laniakea · 22/04/2017 09:54

we all wore mini dresses and trainers in the 90s, it was the look for summer Grin

it's a bad sign when you start muttering about the yoof of today OP!

HoneyDragon · 22/04/2017 09:55

In seriousness though, I do dress like the woman in the sunglasses. I just add more a less items depending on the season. Blush

So dress, thermal leggings, sweater, boots, jacket winter
Dress, shirt, jacket cropped leggings, trainers Spring
Dress, trainers, Summer
Dress, leggings, flannel shirt, boots, Autumn.

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 22/04/2017 09:55

Shocker, teenagers wear cheap clothes Hmm to my mind, it's a much better 'trend' than a lot of others, I actually think it looks perfectly fine. Teenagers have always shown 'lots of flesh', so I'm not sure why wearing comfy shoes is the one trend to pick u on and be outraged on?
For reference, I wear trainers on nights out. And timberland boots. And Chelsea boots. And sometimes wellies (I'm still a young farmer, just!). They're comfy. Sometimes with dresses, sometimes with skirts and sometimes with jeans. I don't think I look bad 😂
