To ask how you pronounce Amelia

DD is called Amelia. Most people I know seem to pronounce it 'ah-mil-yuh', which is how I have always said it. However, we have recently moved to a completely new area and EVERYONE here pronounces it 'ah-mee-lee-yah', which imo sounds so so annoying. I know I am probably being pretentious not liking the way people say it, but I never realised it was pronounced like that!

Is this the normal way and I've always been saying it wrong??

Never heard it the first way sounds daft snd posh Grin

Second way around here in the midlands.

Think you just have to get used to it

Batgirlspants · 19/04/2017 09:09

Brummie way A Miliaaaa. Grin

JustBeingJobless · 19/04/2017 09:11

The second way. I know no fewer than 6 Amelias and they all pronounce it this way.

Graceflorrick · 19/04/2017 09:11

OP, it IS pronounced 'Ahh-me-lee-ah'.

HomityBabbityPie · 19/04/2017 09:12

Never heard it said the first way, sounds posh and awful.

I know three Amelias and they all pronounce it A-meel-iya

Ecureuil · 19/04/2017 09:12

I can't turn it into 3 syllables! I'm trying!

AmysTiara · 19/04/2017 09:12

2nd way for me. Ameeleeuh. I'm near Liverpool.

Never heard it pronounced the first way.

Specialmeasuresofgin · 19/04/2017 09:14

Second way here also and have known a lot of Amelia and lived in four different counties.

FetchezLaVache · 19/04/2017 09:16

Not quite the first way, but there is a girl at DS's school of Polish origin who pronounces it "A-mell-ia" (to rhyme with "smellier", but thankfully this doesn't seem to have occurred to the other children).

ChasedByBees · 19/04/2017 09:17

I opened this thinking there was only one way to pronounce it. I've also never heard the first option.

Nairsmellsbad · 19/04/2017 09:20

Isn't this just a factor of OP having a different mother-tongue with different vowel sounds? I would also pronounce it the second way but if somebody wanted it pronounced differently I'd certainly make an effort.

MerryMarigold · 19/04/2017 09:21

I am from South East and say it a combination of the 2 I guess.

Definitely Uh (not 'Ah') - Mee-lee-uh. I have only ever heard it pronounced with 'uh' at the beginning NOT 'ah' (like Aha)

JennyOnAPlate · 19/04/2017 09:23

Ah mil ya sounds like I'm putting on a dodgy Australian accent Grin

I've only ever heard it pronounced the second way.

Vagndidit · 19/04/2017 09:23

Eeks. The second way would be quite common in the southern US, particularly Texas. I may have some personal knowledge of that one...

Vagndidit · 19/04/2017 09:25

Sorry, meant to say the first way is very wrong Southern US. Ah-mee-lee-uh seems to be the correct way.

EC22 · 19/04/2017 09:26

In broad Glaswegian it'd be the first pronunciation.

GaelicSiog · 19/04/2017 09:28

OP I'm with you. Amelja/Emilja is a name in parts of Eastern Europe and Scandinavia.

Branleuse · 19/04/2017 09:30

2nd way

SoupDragon · 19/04/2017 09:32

A-MEE-lee-a with short A sounds.

DesertSky · 19/04/2017 09:34

Sorry but I would assume it's pronounced a-me-lee-ah

DesertSky · 19/04/2017 09:35

Or rather a-me-lee-uh with uh sound at end as opposed to ah

RainbowPastel · 19/04/2017 09:36

Second way. I have never heard it pronounced the first way. It is very popular here. There are 25 in my Dd1's year and 23 in Dd2's year at secondary school.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 19/04/2017 09:39

2nd one

TheDowagerCuntess · 19/04/2017 09:41

This reminds me of a Danielle that I went to school with.

Apparently it want Dan-i-elle, it was Dan-yelle.

TheDowagerCuntess · 19/04/2017 09:43

*wasn't Dan-i-elle
