To ask how you pronounce Amelia

moonlightmile · 19/04/2017 03:08

DD is called Amelia. Most people I know seem to pronounce it 'ah-mil-yuh', which is how I have always said it. However, we have recently moved to a completely new area and EVERYONE here pronounces it 'ah-mee-lee-yah', which imo sounds so so annoying. I know I am probably being pretentious not liking the way people say it, but I never realised it was pronounced like that!

Is this the normal way and I've always been saying it wrong??

4 syllables: A...meel...i...a

Fooshufflewickbannanapants · 19/04/2017 08:25

Yorkshire girl here and I've only ever said a me lee ya

greedycushionhoarder · 19/04/2017 08:25

My dd is Amelia and we pronounce it the second way, however her best friend who is Polish pronounces it the first way.

tabbymog · 19/04/2017 08:29

I always say it the second way.

SallyGinnamon · 19/04/2017 08:33

Second way here too.

Sunnysidegold · 19/04/2017 08:34

Friend's kid is an Amelia. She gets very annoyed with people pronouncing it the first way and is quite rude with her "it's ah meel ee ah!". I have always said it the second way.

Only1scoop · 19/04/2017 08:34

Lots around here, all A Mee Lee A as far as I know

BewtySkoolDropowt · 19/04/2017 08:36

Second, sorry op

cliffdiver · 19/04/2017 08:36

A-me-lee-yah

My grandma who is Scottish pronounces as per your OP.

BonfiresOfInsanity · 19/04/2017 08:39

My DSis and DM are both called Amelia and we have always pronounced it Ah-mee-lee-ya.

BonfiresOfInsanity · 19/04/2017 08:39

My mum is Irish if that makes any difference.

KinkyAfro · 19/04/2017 08:43

Second

Ecureuil · 19/04/2017 08:43

2nd way. Never heard it pronounced the first way but can see how it would be in a Scottish accent.

BrutusMcDogface · 19/04/2017 08:45

She is YOUR daughter. If you want her name to be pronounced the first way, then that's fine!

I've also only heard it that way in greys anatomy but I do love yhr way Owen says it !

^ second way again. Sorry OP

Gin- this is just plain rude.

Wormwoodm · 19/04/2017 08:48

In Scotland a few people used to say it similar to your first option. I would definitely use second.

MuncheysMummy · 19/04/2017 08:48

I know 2 Amelia's both are definately Aa-mee-lee-ah and have only ever heard it pronounced that way!

OnionKnight · 19/04/2017 08:48

I pronounce it the second way, always have done.

JustMyLuckUnfortunately · 19/04/2017 08:49

Second way for me too. Haven't heard anyone pronounce it the first way, are you in the U.K.?

Enko · 19/04/2017 08:53

In my head I always say Amelia the way the "Uncle Waldorf" (the goose) in Aristocats says it. AmeeeeeeeelJah To peoples faces I say it the way I am introduced. I know people who pronounce it both ways. I prefer the 2nd personally.

I always felt it was a bit like Alicia can correctly be said 2 ways.

Vq1970 · 19/04/2017 08:54

As I was reading your post, I said it in my head the first way. But I know a lot of people who would said it the second way.

MaisyPops · 19/04/2017 08:56

Another vote for am-ee-lee-a

Cant see how anyone gets the first pronunciation

emilybrontescorset · 19/04/2017 08:58

Second way

Lifegavemelemons · 19/04/2017 08:58

Second way here - but honestly, just about all names are open to different pronunciations. I have a short, bog standard, old fashioned name. Not Julie but that will do as an example. I moved to a different part of the UK and discovered that even with that short name there are regional variations. In my home town the emphasis is one one syllable, here the emphasis is on the other - and don't get me started about the number of people wanting to tag an 'a' onto the end to replace the 'e' !

Just pronounce it the way you want to in the family and relax about other pronunciations- outside your control.

I do remember the initial "WTF?" When I first moved here though - I've had 30yrs to become more chilled about it Grin

Naughty1205 · 19/04/2017 09:02

I'm Irish and would pronounce it the first way OP.

user1488397138 · 19/04/2017 09:05

I'm with you OP. Also from Scotland.
