To ask how you pronounce Amelia

DD is called Amelia. Most people I know seem to pronounce it 'ah-mil-yuh', which is how I have always said it. However, we have recently moved to a completely new area and EVERYONE here pronounces it 'ah-mee-lee-yah', which imo sounds so so annoying. I know I am probably being pretentious not liking the way people say it, but I never realised it was pronounced like that!

Is this the normal way and I've always been saying it wrong??

OP posts:
KitKat1985 · 19/04/2017 09:44

2nd way. Sorry OP.

ProudBadMum · 19/04/2017 09:45

Me-Lee-A here

For some reason I never say the A it's my daughters name

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 19/04/2017 09:49

Never heard it pronounced the first way, only the second!

savagehk · 19/04/2017 09:50

Second, sorry :)

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 19/04/2017 09:50

Am ee li a

I can understand how it would be different if your accent is strong and different to the surrounding area.

I have a different accent to the area where I live. Locals often "bend" sounds a bit compared to the way I say them, and I can't replicate it. I've had to explain to students that try to correct me because they say their name with a subtly different emphasis and get annoyed that I'm "wrong" when it's just a difference of accent that's very hard to change. A bit like me saying "James" in one syllable and them correcting me to "Jay-ums"
(A higher percentage of the British population would agree with me on that example Grin )

EvilDoctorBallerinaDuck · 19/04/2017 09:51

The first way reminds me of the Simon and Garfunkel song Cecilia. They sing "Sesseelyuh".

itsonlysubterfuge · 19/04/2017 09:52

I say it the first way! I am American, it is definitely pronounced Ah-mill-yuh where I am from.

CoraPirbright · 19/04/2017 09:54

2nd way. Never heard the first one.

Mu123 · 19/04/2017 09:55

My dd has a friend amelia, dd is always giving me trouble for not saying it right, its YAH! I try but it always comes out yuh, reckon its just my accent Hmm

AreWeThereYet000 · 19/04/2017 09:56

I am northern (Leeds) and we say it the second way so no idea why you all think the first way is from up north ha!! It's my daughters name...said exactly how it's Speke A-me-li-a xx

Notso · 19/04/2017 10:04

I've heard both Ameelya and Am ee lee ah.

shellhider · 19/04/2017 10:04

A-me-lee-a

user1489179512 · 19/04/2017 10:04

Am el i a.
It has four syllables and y features nowhere.

Hmm
MusicToMyEars800 · 19/04/2017 10:04

French would be Amélie this is my dds name but I pronounce it without the French accent that makes it sound like Emily but with an A Grin
OP I pronounce Amelia the 2nd way and everyone I know does too my dds friend is called Amelia and her mum says it 2nd way too.

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 19/04/2017 10:05

'ah-mee-lee-yah
Sorry, OP. But I think your pronunciation is valid as well, righ? No need to change how you say it or anything, right?

SnicketyLemon · 19/04/2017 10:07

Lady across the roads granddaughter is called Amelia but she pronounces it the first way (she is Irish). Her daughter (mother of Amelia) pronounces it the second way (she was born in south east England).
It is regional I think, my mum is called Sandra, where we are from in the East Midlands it is pronounced San-dra, where we live now every one pronounces it Sarn-dra. She answers to either.

Batgirlspants · 19/04/2017 10:07

Dan yell orite

Getting sick of Amelia as a name though it's everywhere.

Screwinthetuna · 19/04/2017 10:10

Never heard it pronounced the first way in my life! I (and everyone else where I live) pronounce it 'ah-mee-lee-ah.' Sorry! Sounds better than the first way anyway, IMO

HarryPottersMagicWand · 19/04/2017 12:43

Second way. I have an Amelia. I know a Polish woman who pronounces it more your way so would think it's an accent thing but it is correct the second way.

BlondeBecky1983 · 19/04/2017 12:52

Second way, never heard the first in this country although I have in the US.

MadisonAvenue · 19/04/2017 12:55

A-me-lee-a

therootoftheroot · 19/04/2017 12:56

second way
have never heard anyone say it your first way

MrsELM21 · 19/04/2017 12:56

'ah-mee-lee-yah'

The first way sounds very regional (and wrong!)

limon · 19/04/2017 12:57

A (as in apple) meal eee uh.

hackmum · 19/04/2017 13:00

Acrossthepond: "I pronounce it somewhere between the two: Ah-meel-ya."

Me too. Definitely a "meel" rather than "mil" and a "ya" rather than "ee-ah", which sounds a bit weird to me.
