To ask how you pronounce Amelia

DD is called Amelia. Most people I know seem to pronounce it 'ah-mil-yuh', which is how I have always said it. However, we have recently moved to a completely new area and EVERYONE here pronounces it 'ah-mee-lee-yah', which imo sounds so so annoying. I know I am probably being pretentious not liking the way people say it, but I never realised it was pronounced like that!

Is this the normal way and I've always been saying it wrong??

I say the second way because that's how it's spelled.

nickbutnosaint · 19/04/2017 07:20

I worked in a nursery where we had a little girl from Lithuania, her mother pronounced it the first way, most of us ( children and staff) found it quite difficult to say it like that - favouring the second way!

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 19/04/2017 07:21

Estuary English does say A - meel/mil -yah

I teach an Amelia and most of her mates --when trying not to sound like they come forma posh Georgian town - say Ah - meeel - yaah

Bambambini · 19/04/2017 07:21

A-meel-ya

StillDrivingMeBonkers · 19/04/2017 07:21

None of those ways!

Am-eehl-yah

bimbobaggins · 19/04/2017 07:22

I pronounce it the second way too. Haven't heard of any other pronunciation.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 19/04/2017 07:22

Come to think of it , I don't exactly say a - meel - ee- a... there's more of a ya at the end of mine , too (I'm Scottish...)

MaynJune · 19/04/2017 07:44

Like Bambambini: A-meel-ya

Three syllables. Scotland.

Fluffyears · 19/04/2017 07:45

Ah-meel-yah, I'm Scottish and have only ever heard this way.

Reow · 19/04/2017 07:47

Only ever heard the second way.

MollyHuaCha · 19/04/2017 07:51

I would always use four syllables fir this name - A-mee-lee-ah.

Vroomster · 19/04/2017 07:56

Second way.

BeyondThePage · 19/04/2017 07:57

Three syllables here - Ah-meel-yah (Scottish)

StatisticallyChallenged · 19/04/2017 08:00

I've heard both 3 and 4 syllable version - Edinburgh, local area fairly mc and tends towards posh edinburgh accent which is 4 syllables. The shouted on the bus version is 3 Grin

Citizenoftheuniverse · 19/04/2017 08:00

The second way is going to be much more common I would think.

AgentProvocateur · 19/04/2017 08:10

Lone voice here, but I'd pronounce it the first way with three syllables - a-meel-ya. From Glasgow (in case it's a regional thing!)

AgentProvocateur · 19/04/2017 08:11

Oops, I see my fellow Scots agree with me Grin You'll need to move to Scotland OP, if you want it pronounced properly Wink

Friolero · 19/04/2017 08:12

Second way here too, never heard it pronounced the first wa.

Banjopluckface · 19/04/2017 08:14

2nd way

thethoughtfox · 19/04/2017 08:17

Echoing:'I have never heard anyone say Ah-mil-yuh!'

My dd is Amelia, I'm Scottish and say ah meal ia

zukiecat · 19/04/2017 08:21

I say Ah-meel-ya

I'm from NE Scotland

MidnightSheep · 19/04/2017 08:23

Aargh! I pronounce it both ways. If the name is hyphenated I use the three syllable version (e.g. Amelia-Jane would be Ah-meal-yah). But if the name is standalone I use the four syllable version (e.g. A-meal-ee-a)

Why? No idea.
