AIBU to not understand why "normal" people vote Tory?

OK, so I'll probably get flamed for this but am genuinely interested! All the people I know who vote Tory are pretty well off so use private schools and healthcare. As a family we need the NHS and we need a good education system - and I can't see them getting any better under the Tories. Are these just not priorities for Tory voters or do they really believe they will improve even with a Conservative government?

Oh yes, the global banking and markets crisis that was of course caused by Labour...or not

Not caused by Labour No.
But if they had not deregularised the banks it would not have affected the UK.

makeourfuture · 22/04/2017 15:15

Corbyn is a Gamma Male. Labour has form for being led by Beta Males (Miliband is your ultimate Beta Male) and failing to win elections. A Gamma Male leader is a change of style but not a better election prospect.

Please leave psuedo science out of it.

EnjoyYourVegetables · 22/04/2017 15:24

LouKout you just changed the scenario.

An individual abstention in the system we have could be taken as a vote for the incumbent MP. Anyway it's angels on pinheads territory imo.

Caprianna · 22/04/2017 15:30

Meg, do you think Tories want to regularise the banks?

meg54 · 22/04/2017 15:57

No I don't Caprianna,

If my memory serves it was PM Thatcher who set the ball rolling back in the Eighties to start with.

But I do think that the FSA (brought in by Gordon Brown to "police" the financial services industry upon deregulation) have fallen well short of their brief.

The fact that workers are still being robbed of their work pensions is a disgrace that has been left unchallenged by all the major political parties.

I have been annoyed with Corbyn because I feel he is in favour of Brexit. But I don't think he is as incompetent as the media would suggest.

Lottie That has been posted by Labour but it doesn't automatically mean that Labour FORCED all those U-turns. Because, clearly, they didn't.

lottieandmia · 22/04/2017 20:21

So, what did then?

woodhill · 22/04/2017 20:34

I think that there are a lot of working people who vote Tory because the Labour Government deem them wealthy when they are not particularly but may be a home owner.

Then they become a cash cow.

Caprianna · 22/04/2017 20:44

Mondeo-man!

JanetBrown2015 · 22/04/2017 22:34

Lottie, that kind of poster will make people vote Tory actually.

coconuttella · 22/04/2017 23:02

So, what did then?

Tory backbenchers threatening to rebel or Tory ministers threatening to resign.... because despite some on here who would suggest otherwise, Conservatives do have a social conscience (e.g. foreign aid budget)

Without a parliamentary majority, Labour can't force anything.

lottieandmia · 22/04/2017 23:15

'Lottie, that kind of poster will make people vote Tory actually.'

Jolly good Xenia.

lottieandmia · 22/04/2017 23:17

So if everything on the poster is a lie - can you explain how?

HelenaDove · 22/04/2017 23:59

From 15 December 1992.

The abolition of the wages councils and the threat to the lower paid.

www.heraldscotland.com/news/12577696.Abolition_of_wages_councils_and_threat_to_the_lower_paid/

The abolition of these councils went ahead in 1993. This is what led to VERY low paid jobs.

CopperRose · 23/04/2017 00:00

So if everything on the poster is a lie - can you explain how?

...because I have not seen any evidence at all that Theresa has a hankering to feed children to people....

RunRabbitRunRabbit · 23/04/2017 00:34

Can't be arsed lottie. You keep demanding that people do your research for you on this thread. If you had paid any attention to what has actually been going on in Westminster you wouldn't post such things. For example, one item on the list is the u-turn on academies but that u-turn was driven very strongly by the Conservatives themselves, not Labour at all. Trying to claim it for labour makes me suspicious of all the other items (plus I know that many others weren't stopped by labour but by other pressures).

You should try thinking and researching for yourself instead of believing everything a political party tells you. Get out of your echo chamber and engage with critical thought.

And yes, that stupid child eater poster pushed me a bit closer to voting Conservative. The one before was commenting on how Corbyn wants to spend lots of money and stop austerity measures. If you have to resort to ludicrous child eater stuff about the Tories then it sounds like you are grasping at straws.

lottieandmia · 23/04/2017 09:01

Oh good answer. 'Can't be arsed' ok. I think it's a bit hypocritical to say that I should get out of my echo chamber and then say that a propaganda poster would be the reason you decide to vote. The poster itself was in response to the 'magic beans' one above - equally silly propaganda.

lottieandmia · 23/04/2017 09:03

It's not demanding to ask people to explain why they believe there are generations of work shy families when the government themselves have basically admitted they made it up.

Pinkandwhiteblossoms · 23/04/2017 09:05

See the "free meals for primary children" just makes me think - here we go again, money down the drain.

RainbowsAndUnicorn · 23/04/2017 09:18

The free school meals was an utter waste of money, if parents won't provide their children with a decent lunch then we should be involving the relevant safeguarding agencies not hiding the problem with free food.

That money could have funded so many more extras teachers and TAs and made a real difference.

TheMonkeyandthePlywoodViolin · 23/04/2017 09:20

Are you unaware that some people can't afford to feed their children?

lottieandmia · 23/04/2017 09:22

Yes I agree. I don't have a problem with sensible austerity measures. As I've already said, I felt Labour did waste money last time they were in office.

Sensible austerity measures are fine. What's not fine is shitting on the most vulnerable people in society like those with a disability. So far this government has appeared to be at war with disabled people.
