Why do we need a general election now?

Conservative are obviously going to win. What's the point in doing this now?

OP posts:
alltouchedout · 18/04/2017 11:28

Basically if she waits until 2020 the shit will have hit the fan and she might not win. Right now Jeremy Corbyn is looking weak, so she'll probably win.

Yep.

VladmirsPoutine · 18/04/2017 11:29

The crux of it is: we're leaving the EU in 2019 - if Brexit turns out to be a shit show (even though it'd just be a year in) then there's no way in hell she'd be elected in a 2020 GE.

OnionKnight · 18/04/2017 11:32

Brexit is going to be a shit show and by calling for an election now they know they'll win whereas in a few years the public will be baying for their blood and they wouldn't get elected.

leccybill · 18/04/2017 11:33

Oh fuck, just thought, DD's school will be bloody closed again. It's already shut for the local elections in May.

JennyOnAPlate · 18/04/2017 11:34

She's called it now because she knows she will win. Corbyn needs to stand down but then is there really a viable alternative?

peggyundercrackers · 18/04/2017 11:35

this is so she can give labour a kicking which isn't surprising given corbyn is still trying to lead them.

she will give SNP a kicking too because scots are fed up of SNP/NS and her dictatorship - SNP are fucking useless and most scots are now fed up of their fuckwittery - and don't get me started on Patrick Harvie - hes a wanker of the highest proportions and is just an SNP puppet.

Oakmaiden · 18/04/2017 11:36

They can't reverse Brexit article 50 has been triggered.

I bet if the EU wanted the UK to "untrigger" it then a way could be found. And I strongly suspect that they would be up for that.

KidLorneRoll · 18/04/2017 11:36

It's a cynical power grab.

Labour are a fucking joke led by a man who barely seems to give a single shit about just about anything.

The snp can only lose seats.

Lib dems will probably pick up a few seats.

The tories are going to end up with a huge majority. As much as cunt as May is, she's not stupid.

hazeyjane · 18/04/2017 11:36

Your op answers your own question.

TinfoilHattie · 18/04/2017 11:37

To shut up Nippy Nicky Sturgeon and her constant bleating that May is unelected and doesn't have a mandate.

To get a bigger majority and make Brexit negotiations smoother.

It's a canny move. She will win, Corbyn will be booted out afterwards by Labour when he loses a shitload more seats and hopefully the SNP will get a kicking too (don't really care who gives them a kicking as long as it happens).

Happy days.

TheLambShankRedemption · 18/04/2017 11:37

Because she is ever accused of being an unelected leader.

Because a 5 year, rather than 3, handling of the Brexit negotiations would be more consistent.

Because Labour can never win an election with Corbyn at the helm.

They are my top 3 guesses.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 18/04/2017 11:37

What are the chances of Labour, Lib Dems, SNP, the Greens, Uncle Tom Cobley and all forming an alliance?

Helenluvsrob · 18/04/2017 11:37

Anyone else in fear we may gain the one European thing I didn't want to be part of - the rise of the far right ?

KikiDeliversCakes · 18/04/2017 11:38

Me too wasonthelist - protest vote here makes no difference as long term tory will win... Angry

Thegirlinthefireplace · 18/04/2017 11:38

The is going to ruin the country for the foreseeable. I think I will be even more depressed on June 9th than I was after the referendum.

I implore voters to look at the destruction of the NHS, cuts to vulnerable people, schools, state of the economy, the lies this woman has churned out time after time and vote anyone but Tory.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 18/04/2017 11:38

She wouldn't have called an election unless she knew she had a very very good chance of winning.

Time for another political upset? Wink

shellhider · 18/04/2017 11:39

Conservative are obviously going to win. What's the point in doing this now?

That's it. Theresa May is confident that she will win, that's what she wants as she's then got a mandate to go on with her manifesto.

It's nothing to do with Brexit, NK, the state of the country or anything else. She knows that Labour are a shambles and is taking the chance to get elected again.

Meanwhile the 55% of Scots who voted no, now have an opportunity to show Nicola Sturgeon that no, she does not have a mandate for another referendum

Yes this will be interesting wont it? Despite the vocal anti-SNP script that appears here on MN every time independence, Scotland, the SNP etc are mentioned I think you are in for a rude awakening Morris. Only need to wait till June 9th to see though!

bananafish · 18/04/2017 11:41

Power grab - and it will be a successful one.

I think Scotland will be the only unknown. Outside of that little thorn in her side, she's laughing.

IsithormonesoramIamadcow · 18/04/2017 11:41

Brexit is going to be carnage and they want to try and obiliterate any opposition to their catastrophic policies. With labour in disarray then they will get a mandate for this disaster. As the Brexit induced recession hits they will be 'forced' to reduce benefits and seek off the NHS. As all the while their millionaire backers (like Theresa Mays husband) laugh all the way to their off shore bank accounts.

Most legal experts (including the bloke who originally wrote it) maintain that article 50 can be reversed. Especially if there are enough of us British EU citizens who want it. So a 2nd referendum in the 'deal' would give that option.

Vote Lib Dems - everyone please! They are the only voice of sanity left. And while they may seem like a tiny force in parliament at the moment, they have a massive power at grass roots level. It can happen!

Oakmaiden · 18/04/2017 11:42

protest vote here makes no difference as long term tory will win

Do it anyway. Because at least then when she gets her 80% of the parliamentary seats with 25% of the votes cast (I may be exaggerating slightly), we will still be able to say "This stinks and is a farce". Otherwise it looks legitimate all the way to 2022...

Huldra · 18/04/2017 11:42

We don't need it but May does.

They haven't given the other parties much time to organize themselves. There's all the paperwork, getting candidates, getting local and national campaigns sorted. Tories have money to chuck at it.

Labour are weak and fighting themselves. They have been working on the fixed term timescales.
Lib Debs are much smaller and don't have the same financial backing but will pick up some seats. They have been working on the fixed term timescales.

It still needs to get voted through which they need more than just the conservative vote to acheive. If they don't get their election I wonder how they will spin it.

averylongtimeago · 18/04/2017 11:43

She is a cynical bitch. What we are seeing is the rise of the far right, if we are not carefull the Tories will be in power for the foreseeable future. The health service will be destroyed and privatised, quality education will only be for those who have money and God help you if you are old, sick, disabled or poor.

IsithormonesoramIamadcow · 18/04/2017 11:43

In calling this election the Torres are being smug and cocky. Let's give them a kicking on that score alone. Don't forget that this whole Brexit crap only happened as a result of internal Tory party politicking. Fuck that!
