Conservative are obviously going to win. What's the point in doing this now?

wason

I don't know, but my Facebook feed is already full of remainers (Not retainers sorry for the autocorrect) talking about how we need to vote the tories out.

They might not stop Brexit, but could make it a very very 'soft' Brexit.

meditrina · 18/04/2017 11:59

I think it's to stop the arsing about by the Lords. Because they'll find it far harder to play ping pong with legislation if May wins a good majority at a GE.

Also, remember the Tories came second across Scotland last time - it wouldn't take much of an increase in their share of the vote for them to be winning seats (especially if SNP vote splinters to a range of other parties).

MongerTruffle · 18/04/2017 11:59

Sorry if I'm being thick but article 50 has already been triggered so would the lib dems really be able to reverse it?

They could vote against the European Communities Act 1972 being repealed.

roarityroar · 18/04/2017 12:00

Bigger majority

Put poor Corbyn out of his misery

So people remember the existence of Tim Farron

So remainers can stop complaining

Thousands of reasons

RedToothBrush · 18/04/2017 12:01

Brexit and a power grab by the executive to try and make sure that they get the Great Repeal Bill through.

The Great Repeal Bill removes parliamentary scrutiny from law making.

This is EVERYTHING you need to know about the GE.

Do you want the government to just make laws without discussion, parliamentary or public?

It would mark a massive break from our centuries of democracy.

Its not about May, Corbyn, Farron or Sturgeon or anyone else.

EweAreHere · 18/04/2017 12:01

It's a power consolidation.

Sucks for most of us. Labour is in disarray. LibDems haven't recovered. SNP is only in Scotland. The Conservatives may not have the majority support of the people who live in the country, but they will surely win the election under the circumstances.

Well and truly sucks for the majority of average people. The elite win again. :(

The80sweregreat · 18/04/2017 12:01

I can see Theresa doing another speech on the 9th june and Corbyn resigning the same day.
very very sad and i hope its not going to happen, but have a feeling it will.
Its an election on the back foot for labour and she and her cronies know this only too well. Lies and more lies will come and people will vote for it all. makes me feel ill. Maybe the school cuts that are coming will make people think twice, but i doubt it.

wasonthelist · 18/04/2017 12:02

So remainers can stop complaining

Don't think that will ever happy (or that it necessarily should).

HerOtherHalf · 18/04/2017 12:04

Unfortunately unless she kicks a puppy in the face live on air, the tories are going to win

That would probably just gain her support from UKIP swing voters, especially if the puppy in question is a German Shepherd, Pomeranian or other non-indigenous breed.

NotALottaPot · 18/04/2017 12:04

Too many sadistic bastards in this country who will be voting for more poverty, division, unequality, cuts and privatisation. Why why why why would anyone in their right mind ever vote for tories? How can you support their inhuman policies??

I vote Tory. I wouldn't call myself sadistic.

NameChanger22 · 18/04/2017 12:06

If everyone on the left and everyone who doesn't want brexit gets behind the Lib Dems then there is a small chance we can get the Tories out. I think we all need to forget about Labour for now.

I most like the Green Party but I've always voted Labour in the past to try and keep the Tories out. I will be voting for the Lib Dems now.

alwaysprepare · 18/04/2017 12:06

Funny how the BBC keeps playing the interview where she is adamant that she will not hold a snap election .
Would be quite amusing if she lost though.

Even if Labour changed leadership, the time is too short to get that person endeared and trusted by the public to be the PM.

Ewe be grateful the Scottish Nationalist are only in Scotland - there are other Nationalist parties in England though they don't wear sheep's clothing...

hackmum · 18/04/2017 12:07

Labour will be wiped out. She will have a mandate.

It does rather make a mockery of the fixed term parliaments act,.

I really hope Corbyn has the sense to do the decent thing and resign once the party has been obliterated electorally. I've a horrible feeling he will just cling on, though.

Scotland might be interesting. Will the SNP retain all those seats, or will the electorate decide to give someone else a chance? And if so, who?

flyingwithwings · 18/04/2017 12:08

Election Prediction June the 8th 2017

Conservatives 44% (406) Seats Labour 23% (151) Lib Dems 15% (15) Ukip 7% (0) Snp 4.8% (55) Plaid 0.6% (4) N Ireland 1.6% (18)

The General Election will take place on the current electoral boundaries of 650 seats !

Any switch of Conservative voters to the Lib Dems will be wiped out by switch back from Ukip.

roarityroar · 18/04/2017 12:10

Oh I so hope that result is accurate

The stats really illustrate how unfair the system is though. I'm no fan of ukip but despite many more votes they get 0 to SNP's predicted 55

The80sweregreat · 18/04/2017 12:13

If your a remainer , there isnt any point voting labour really.

Corbyn would have to go if they lose big time ( which they probably will)
He would be pushed if he doesnt go quietly surely?
Might be time for the lib dems to appeal to the 48 percent that want remain. i live in a tory stronghold with a leaver MP, so no hope around here of any different faces, but have to see what the lib dem person has to say!

Ceto · 18/04/2017 12:14

It's a blatantly dishonest piece of political gerrymandering by May, no more, no less. We don't need an election now, if anything we should be concentrating on Brexit negotiations rather than spending 7 weeks electioneering.

Ceto · 18/04/2017 12:15

I really hope the LibDems at least step up, ensure the election focusses on Brexit and give May cause to regret this.
