To ask if you mind being called "Man"?

If you're a woman, do you mind being called "Mate" or "Man", "Dude" etc.? As in "Yeah man/dude, go for it".

There's a youngish guy in my office who frequently addresses the women (including me) like this, and I don't know why exactly but I really dislike it.

AIBU? Blush

I live where David Tennant grew up so imagine his voice.

We tend to say "no way, man" "I was pure pished, man' and " aww, man!"

We tend to call ladies "hen" and men "son"

I hate being called love

AppleShampoo · 14/04/2017 17:36

Yup, another one from the north east here and I'm afraid I say lots of things ending in man - like "come on man, hurry up"

It doesn't matter if I'm addressing and actual man or woman. In my mind, it's got nothing to do with gender! Blush

Wauden · 14/04/2017 17:45

'Guys' I don't like because I/we are not guys.

Its is a throwback to when 'he' or 'man' were used as a general word for both sexes, which people realised was ridiculous some years ago! Thus, 'guys' is excluding.

'The girl in the office' is patronising. You would not call a man a 'boy in the office'.

Bohemond · 14/04/2017 17:47

I work with many Americans who are both senior in rank and senior in age to me. I love being called Ma'am. Misses point!

pseudonymity · 14/04/2017 17:49

I don't care as long as it's not Madam.

toffeeboffin · 14/04/2017 17:51

I hate it.

A guy I once fancied called me 'man' and it put me right off.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 14/04/2017 17:52

I dont mind. I dont get 'mate' very often but living in the North East 'man' is used quite a lot but more as an exasperation such as 'Jenny man what did you do that for' or 'oh shit Rosie man'

user1471596238 · 14/04/2017 17:52

I guess that saying 'girls' depends on the context as there is the saying 'I'm off out with the girls tonight'.

BalthazarImpresario · 14/04/2017 17:59

I don't mind, i do it but then I work in a 'young' workplace

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 14/04/2017 18:06

I have worked with blokes who have called me "mate" it nevered bothered me. I figured if he referred to both men and women as mate then he viewed them as equals. He was a nice person to work with so I took it in the spirit it was meant.

Branleuse · 14/04/2017 18:12

it doesnt bother me at all.

n0ne · 14/04/2017 18:12

I call everyone mate and man! So I obviously don't care if they do it to me. But this is normal in my peer group. Odd, never even thought about it.

MrsMeeseeks · 14/04/2017 18:13

I call people 'man' a lot, too. Needless to say, I don't mind being called 'man' one bit!

DrSeuss · 14/04/2017 18:18

Came on here to recommend that haters stay away from the beautiful North East but I see the other bonny lasses have beaten me to it!
(Never come to the North East by the way. You'd hate it. Beautiful beaches, friendly people, amazing cathedrals, you'd hate it!)

Fruitcocktail6 · 14/04/2017 18:45

Doesn't bother me in the slightest

ohnothisisme · 15/04/2017 08:19

It's funny because I don't mind anything else - dear, love, ladies, guys! Although I don't like being called a girl.

I just don't like being called "Man". It doesn't genuinely annoy me IYSWIM, just one of those things that makes me Grin when he does it!

Chavelita · 15/04/2017 08:21

I can't tell you how much I prefer 'man' to to 'ladies'.

NotYoda · 15/04/2017 08:23

I think that if someone from Scotland or the NE said it to me, I'd be unbothered.

Here in London, it's more likely be a chugger or a hipster young-person type who's misjudged their audience, so a bit silly

NotYoda · 15/04/2017 08:24

DrSeuss

Came to Northumberland last Summer. Will be coming back. Sod Cornwall Grin

OhhBetty · 15/04/2017 08:26

Meh, it's not like you're being called cunty chops so I wouldn’t give it any more head space.

user1471545174 · 15/04/2017 08:28

Weirdly I don't mind man, or dude, from male friends (I'm a mid 50s woman). I use guys myself Blush

I really dislike mate from men who should be saying madam. Especially when they are saying sir to my male equivalents.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 15/04/2017 08:36

Me too @Bohemond - love being called Ma'am

nigelforgotthepassword · 15/04/2017 08:52

I quite like it tbh...it's no big deal to me. I'd sooner that than 'madam' which makes me feel middle aged!
