To ask if you mind being called "Man"?

If you're a woman, do you mind being called "Mate" or "Man", "Dude" etc.? As in "Yeah man/dude, go for it".

There's a youngish guy in my office who frequently addresses the women (including me) like this, and I don't know why exactly but I really dislike it.

Wouldn't bother me.

highinthesky · 14/04/2017 16:07

I use it as a substitute expletive, as in "oh man!"....as opposed to "fuck-oh-fuck-oh-fuck". It seemed a bit more appropriate when we had DC!

LadyPW · 14/04/2017 16:11

I don't like 'guys' when it's a chugger / waiter doing it to me and another - it sounds forced and angling for money (I've not experienced waitresses do it so haven't included them)

OvariesForgotHerPassword · 14/04/2017 16:13

I get "dude" or "mate" a lot. I also get kiddo, I like that but I may outgrow it after about 25 Grin

I don't mind it, but I don't mind most pet names.

ScarletForYa · 14/04/2017 16:16

I like it, it's friendly.

TaliDiNozzo · 14/04/2017 16:16

This doesn't bother me at all as long as there is no ill intent along with it, iyswim. I would find it a bit twattish to make a thing of someone doing this tbh.

ivykaty44 · 14/04/2017 16:24

I dislike being referred to as if I'm a male, so guy, guys, man, bloke, bookie just gets my back up. I have been known to address the person using this language as "fairy cakes"

So hi guys how can i help you

Oh I'd like a table for two fairy cakes

Most men being called fairy 🍰 grown quite a lot, so mini munchkin then gets used....

NotYoda · 14/04/2017 16:25

Actually, I don't mind that much. It's usually well- meant; just a bit silly in my case.

BertrandRussell · 14/04/2017 16:26

So long as he doesn't mind being called "lassie" or "angelface" or "babygirl"

ohnothisisme · 14/04/2017 16:31

Haha Bert I might give lassie a go. Grin

Don't mind any of these, guys, chaps, people, man, mate, and I love "dude!?!" which I use all the time regardless of sex. Mind you I'm also happy with bird and bizarrely relaxed about "daft bint" which I realise is objectively offensive. The only ones I actually object to are "girl/s" and "ladies" in a work context and "sir" which clearly indicates the speaker hasn't actually looked at me.

TyneTeas · 14/04/2017 16:31

With ref to pp and Neville saying 'Brenda, man' in auf Wiedersehen Pet, it is not uncommon to hear things like 'Howay man, woman' round here Grin

TheCrystalMaise · 14/04/2017 16:41

My dad addresses every family gathering, no matter who is present, with 'hello men!'. He has 3 daughters and currently lives with my mum and 2 female dogs, one female cat, so is never usually in the company of any men. I love it and would be sad if he stopped!

EdmundCleverClogs · 14/04/2017 16:44

Much rather man or dude over girl, babe, hun or ladies shudder. The first two seem far more relaxed and easy going as opposed to the other (feminine) versions, wich are on a rising scale of patronising to me.

Willyoujustbequiet · 14/04/2017 16:50

Agree with Tyne

Everyone uses man around here. No getting away from it for Geordies.

Haway man mutha man! Grin

nooka · 14/04/2017 16:58

I don't think either are OK at work, but then I work in a professional environment and both are very informal. The sort of thing my teenagers call people, along with 'bro', which is dd's favourite (for everyone), ds also like 'fam'.

I used to use 'guys' quite a bit as a gender neutral term, but having realised it's not really gender neutral at all try not to now. Mate is fine in a casual setting I think, although only to be used in the UK. I don't live in the UK anymore and it gets some very blank looks here :)

BlueChairs · 14/04/2017 16:59

Not bothered by it. It's a generation thing I think.

JoffreyBaratheon · 14/04/2017 17:03

I'm not a youngish woman but I have 5 sons and am the only female in the house. They've called me "dude" and "bro" for years...

Ohyesiam · 14/04/2017 17:12

I don't like being referred to as a girl. And I've allways thought dude is an ugly word.

Don't think I've ever been called mate, and man seems on s different category somehow. Lots of people say Oh man , kind of like good grief, or holy Moses so it doesn't seen to refer to a gender, more to do with an expression of surprise, irritation etc. So doesn't bother me.

Gabilan · 14/04/2017 17:20

I don't mind it. I hate it when people use "man" to refer to the human race. I regard that as a micro-aggression that ignores 50% of the population. But on a personal level oddly enough it doesn't bother me.

I almost always dislike being called "girl". I say almost always because one rather lovely young barman referred to me and a friend (both in our 40s) as "girls" and I'm afraid I rather liked it. He was half our age and being friendly rather than patronising. It was infinitely preferable to being called "madam" which is what 20 something men usually call me these days and it makes me feel distinctly old.

Batghee · 14/04/2017 17:23

Im a main offender. I call everyone 'mate' even my husband and son haha
I think i just got into the habit of it because i found it funny. I think its the juxtaposition of being a mother and all this 'laddish' terminology..... i just find it very funny

Pinkheart2017 · 14/04/2017 17:25

Doesn't bother me at all

StewieGMum · 14/04/2017 17:25

It doesn't matter whether or not other people don't like it. You don't like it and he needs to respect your feelings on this issue.

PickAChew · 14/04/2017 17:27

It washes over me, but a young man called me love yesterday and i was a bit taken aback!

lljkk · 14/04/2017 17:31

I would not care.
I suppose it's peculiar. But it's not a problem.
