I know I'm being unreasonable because this petition should be hidden away in the depths of the petition topic, where no fucker can see it Blush

But before HQ moves it and gives me a swift kick up the arse, please can I ask you to sign This petition to halt the cutbacks?

Not everyone will agree of course, what with all the other awful cutbacks going on and that's fine.

But an area near me got rid of all their Lollipop patrollers last week and exactly 6 days later a child got hit on the school crossing Sad

Anyway I'll stop waffling now. MNHQ I do apologise for blatantly putting this here for traffic, but when you move it, can you all sign it first? Grin Grin

Thanks.

We've got a lollipop lady here. DCs always say hello to her.

She winds all the drivers up as she only lets a few of them come through at once on school run time, but that might be because there's a handful of arses like the one that put his foot down at 8:30am this morning when he saw me and DS already crossing. Hmm
She's invaluable really.

Signed. Smile

Outing myself, but my nan was given an MBE for being the longest serving lollipop lady in our area. She was interviewed on Sky News and everything. She loved her job.

I will sign that. The roads outside my children's school are very busy at school run times (almost no traffic on them at other times) and it would be much harder to cross without the friendly lollipop man. As a child I had to cross an A road to get to school (after I left school they installed a pedestrian crossing) which would have been a nightmare at rush hour without the lollipop lady.

Done.

My DD walks to uni in the States every day (I think most get the bus), and her lollipop ladies love her because of her accent. She says she has persuaded them to stop hugging her in the middle of the road, because DD was frightened there was going to be an accident, so they now hug on the sidewalk!

They also think it is hysterical that they are known as lollipop ladies in the UK (I think they are school crossing patrols in the US).

Our lollipop lady actually HELPS the flow of traffic, rather than hindering it! She is stationed at a zebra crossing, and tends to encourage the pedestrian s to occasionally let a couple of vehicles through.

One day when she wasn't there the constant flow of people meant almost no vehicles got through and the queues stretched the length of the high street!

WorraLiberty · 11/04/2017 21:24

Yes, there's definitely that Casper.

I make pedestrians wait a little while so I can gather a little group together and cross them all at once, allowing the road to clear on both sides. Plus, when people see you in the middle of the road, they tend to hurry themselves up and cross quickly.

I Love lollipop people. However, if it is a statutory requirement, who decides which crossings must be lollipoped?

Well that's the thing carol, it's not a statutory requirement, meaning that as much as we've had Lollipop people in the UK since the late 1940s, the government and therefore the councils don't have to provide the service.

But the way it works now, is that crossings/junctions with a high number of accidents and/or fatalities get monitored and depending on the results, are allocated a Lollipop person.

But the councils who have decided to save money by cutting the service, are putting out the tag line "Parents are responsible for the safety of their own children".

Well parents have always been responsible for the safety of their children, yet we've had Lollipop people in the UK since the 1940s.

And today, there are way more cars on the roads and tons more children packed into tiny little schools, due to the lack of school spaces.
