They've been out for two weeks now, I pay for a fair amount of things in cash but I just keep getting old pound coins in my change. Is it just me?

I did not know we could only use the old £5 notes till May Shock So glad it's been mentioned on here.

I was surrounded by millions of the things on Monday (at the royal mint) and pressed a button to make my own!
There are so many 2016 ones they are not rare at all or worth more than a pound.

The royal mint is a really interesting place. I was amazed at how many coins they make and the countries they make them for.

HobblingHelen · 12/04/2017 21:59

Well, I've finally seen one. I now know one person who has one - and it was passed round with great interest among several people keen to have a look and a feel of this rare gem.... (I live in major city which, from the newspaper articles, seems to have been one of the first places it was distributed to!)

How do these new coins actually get into wider circulation? I've seen in the thread above about shops having a policy of keeping the new coins and giving the old ones out in change (which seems to match my experience!) - and individuals who are hanging on to any new ones they get. How do the new coins eventually get more widely circulated and the old ones taken out of circulation?

Have been really trying today and all I got for my efforts was an old £5 note. Got rid of that baby in the next shop!

Fuxfurforall · 13/04/2017 22:44

Had loads of them. Seem lightweight and a bit like toy money to me

user1471450764 · 13/04/2017 23:00

Got my first one today was dead chuffed! 😀

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 13/04/2017 23:04

Oooh nice iam

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 13/04/2017 23:04

We got 6 today in change Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/04/2017 23:04

I got one too. Was a bit surprised that the edges that aren't milled were slightly chewed up.

Did you know that because they have an even number of sides they don't have a constant diameter, unlike the 50p?

JiltedJohnsJulie · 13/04/2017 23:09

No I didn't so thanks fir that OhNo. Will tell DS, he loves a good maths stat Smile

SpreadYourHappiness · 13/04/2017 23:30

HobblingHelen That policy certainly isn't universal and I would think applies only to a small number.

Our workplace gets many, many bags of pound coins from the bank per week, and since they were released all bags have been new pound coins. Hence, that's what we're giving out and is what is going into circulation.

I don't live in a big city, either.
