AIBU to be frightened that WW3 is about to happen and my children will be obliterated by a nuclear weapon here in the UK?

Or is that unlikely? I'm hoping someone with a bit more understanding of the situation can explain. All I know is the situation has escalated now Trump has bombed Assad's regime and Russia is mighty pissed off. If the West comes under attack I'm guessing the UK will be nuked?

Polly it is exactly that rhetoric that got Trump elected. I think you overestimate their ability, or desire, to be organised and actually fight on anything like a meaningful scale. And when it's in the interests of the incumbent garment to stay in control of the masses? Nah, I think not.

Honestly, whatever may or may not happen (and Russia being pissed is not the same as Russia waging war agaisnt the West) full blown nuclear war is massively unlikey since no one country in the world has first strike capability. Read up on MAD (mutually assured descruction) a very real, very well used theory, it may ease your fears, and don't read Daily Mail or similar scare mongering, sensationalist headlines (which I guess is where this and other threads are coming from today) x

*government not garment.

God, I'm having an autocorrect 'mare today....

7 pages has anyone mentioned Erdogan yet? If ww3 does happen I'll bet he'll be partly to blame.

You probably wouldn't, however people survived Hiroshima 260m from impact. So it's not a guarantee

Hiroshima was a nuclear fission bomb.... the Thermonuclear (nuclear fusion) bombs the US and Russians has had since the 50s are up to 1,000x more powerful.... if one of those hit 260m from you, you'd not live to tell the tale.

MAD is a real thing, and has kept us from nuclear war for decades. But has anyone seen The War Book - fucking terrifying and a scenario when the UK would agree to use it's nuclear weapons. It's never out of the question that we could use them. People (indeed, Trump has argued this) would argue that we have these weapons, why can't we use them?

The worst thing I have read/heard about a nuclear war is that if it happened - it would happen on a weekday early in the morning. It's the worst thing - children in school, people in or travelling to work. Maximum havoc. I have wondered whether they mean UK early morning, or US...If it was going to happen, I'd want it in the holidays, so at least the children would be with me.

The thought of armageddon when just me & the dog are home is a bit too much for me to handle.

Well if Trump decided he wanted to use them he can say goodbye to the world, same as us. i'm sure if there was a way of using them to get rid of millions of people but still preserve the planet it would have been done years ago. He and Putin enjoy the fine things in life.

I'm a bit, ok really quite worried but trying to contain it, I'm a worrier anyway. Going to stop reading the scaremongering Daily Fail in the middle of the night when I can't sleep though...
