To not want dd to call her baby Dave?

I'm quite happy for it to stay simply as "baby" but her brother keeps telling her to call it Dave. Or Farty-pants. But Dave seems to be sticking. It doesn't even look like a Dave. I spent ages online picking one that wasn't terrible looking and now it's going to be known as Dave!

Unrelated but dd's new gerbils are called Darren and Andrew.

Our guinea pigs were called Cyril and Herbert.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/04/2017 23:44

Dave is an excellent name. DH used to work for a company which as far as we could tell had a policy of hiring 70% Daves. My company at that time had a 60% Mike quota.

DD didn't name any of her dolls, afaik, but her many doggies were all named. Some had 2 names, their real one and then the part they played in a complicated pretend game.

QueenieGoldstein · 05/04/2017 23:46

DD2's doll is called Saturn-Pinecone. She's 3 (DD not Saturn-Pinecone)

So apparently name conventions mainly fall into three camps:
Easy to say common names like Dave and Jeff
Totally random objects or words
Descriptions i.e. Dolly, teddy

DropZoneOne · 06/04/2017 00:48

DDs first few soft toys were simply named what they were, so kitty or bear. Then she got given a giraffe and she couldn't say that so it was named Dave. Dave was a very cool giraffe, he wore an orange fleece gilet.

DD is 9 now and her naming convention has only slightly improved. Her pet hamster is named Adele.

I'm just hearing in my head Denise Royle saying 'Well, I want Keanu, but Dave wants Dave' Grin

FairytalesAreBullshit · 06/04/2017 01:38

Dave, I love it Grin

FairytalesAreBullshit · 06/04/2017 01:44

It's been so long I can't remember anything apart from my teddy was called Ted.

There was a random farming type name my brother would call himself during games. Hoping I can remember as it was so strange.

Choccywoccyhooha · 06/04/2017 01:46

Some of these names are brilliant!
My cousin's unborn baby was known as Dave! He got a new name once he was born.
My friend's was Alan. Alan is now a grown up girl with a proper girl's name!

Choccywoccyhooha · 06/04/2017 01:48

One of my children had a bear (note a bear, definitely a bear) whose name was Stinky Stinky Pooey Donkey.

drspouse · 06/04/2017 03:48

Liquid my DCs have two plastic baby dolls both called Baby and two rag dolls both called Dolly.
I try really hard to give them names but it's not worked.
DD also has a rag doll with yellow feet called Yellow. Yellow got a bit tatty so we got a replacement but they come in whatever colours they have - so New Yellow has blue feet.

HappyFlappy · 06/04/2017 08:15

It's strange how that works out Errol.

I worked in a department where (out of seven people) there were three Paulines, two Pauls and a Paula. We still included Helen in everything though. We were a very forgiving bunch.

Cab65 · 06/04/2017 17:45

Slightly off track but my four year old GS wants his new baby to be called Flash if it's a boy (quite understandably) or Dark Widow if it's a girl . I can imagine the priest face at the Christening.

Craigie · 06/04/2017 17:52

A doll? Fucking hell, get a grip.

theaveragewife · 06/04/2017 17:57

DD2 calls any animal or doll a shortened version of her older sister's name. Sounds cute, but is often used in a very passive aggressive manner.

myusernameisnotmyusername · 06/04/2017 18:02

My daughter called everything Bado for about 2 years! Don't know where she got it from.

dementedma · 06/04/2017 18:20

ds acquired a baby doll in a pink babygro from his big sisters. He took it everywhere and called it...Alan.

Puddington · 06/04/2017 18:20

she does refer to Peppa as "damn pig"
So do I Grin

Sorta-kinda on-topic, but most people I've met called Dave have been tosspots (including a friend's VERY toxic ex-boyfriend) but I realise that's just my own experience!

Bobbins43 · 06/04/2017 18:21

My daughter had his hideous Baby Bjorn her dad bought her. She called it Baby Boris :)

RiverTamFan · 06/04/2017 18:22

Am I the only one who thinks of Red Dwarf when they read the name Dave?

Imabadmummy · 06/04/2017 18:25

Kids come up with the funniest names.

I'm. Just about to out myself, but we have a duck called Steve, a snake called Frank & a male rino called Evie (son is insistent the Rino is a boy but loves the name Evie - poss due to friend at school!)
Dog teddies called Toby & James & a bear called George are the most normal named toys in our house.

I think you just have to accept that it the dolls name.

DagenhamRoundhouse · 06/04/2017 18:25

Dave (or David) seems to be one of those fairly timeless names. Like Christopher. My DH is a Chris and so are young teens on the tills in supermarkets. We have an 11 year old Peter next door too.

SparklyUnicornPoo · 06/04/2017 18:39

DD(8) still has 2 dolls with names, 1 doll is called Frank, its a baby Annabel in a pink dress, I think its to annoy me to be honest. The other is called Persephone-Matilda Pompington, she is a tatty doll DD made out of a glove (bit like a sock monkey) with clothes made from scraps of fabric and multicoloured wool hair.

Louise2092 · 06/04/2017 18:40

My favourite was a hand me down that went from my cousin to me and then my sister and her name was Mandy.
Found out a few years later my mum had a black doll with the same name as a child

MumOnBus · 06/04/2017 19:01

DD had two dolls which were precious enough to her that we named them. BigDolly and LittleDolly. Grin
