to wonder why the fuss about Easter and the national trust?

Theresa May has been quoted as being "furious" about the national trust removing easter from their egg hunts. Because she's the daughter of a vicar and a NT member Hmm

Now I had a look at the national trust poster and it clearly says Easter in big letters. They've just called the activities "egg hunts" but it's very clear it's happening at Easter.

AIBU to think she's massively over reacting over a non issue and might well be reminded that Easter was originally a pagan festival

When I first saw the Cadbury egg hunt advertised on TV, before this controversy kicked off, I must admit that I was pretty pissed off with the wording they chose to use.
"Egg hunts taking place across the UK, from Dundee to Penzance!"

Fools! I thought. That's not "across the UK"! Dundee is many, many miles South of where I live, and I quite fancied taking myself my DC to a NT egg hunt.
Anyway, off the back of this thread I have investigated, and the NT map shows plenty of hunts taking place across Northern Scotland, and I shall not miss out after all.
A big thanks to all the professionally offended, May included, for making this realisation possible.

Sexism directed at politicians (no comment from TM, lots of people supporting this saying she has bigger fish to fry).

Tories can't be arsed to produce a Brexit impact study (TM doesn't bother to comment).

Senior Judges are accused of being enemies of the people - no sign of TM.

A chocolate manufacturer doesn't use the word Easter - all of a sudden TM wades in shocked and appalled taking about Christianity - I don't recall chocolate eggs featuring in the Bible?

If she's such a Christian why is she currently in the Middle East shilling for arms manufacturers and taking money from bereaved families??

I thought we were in stable hands when she won the leadership competition but I actually think she's a dangerous lunatic who only says and does things that will play favourably in the Daily Mail. I can already see tomorrow's headlines. She's dreadful. How can anyone still have faith in her? She's clearly been overpromoted. I genuinely fear for my country.

EduCated · 04/04/2017 21:03

It's a distraction. TM is currently in Saudi Arabia, a country with an appalling human rights record, discussing arms trade deals. Instead of discussing this the media is distracted by a non story about Easter eggs!

A million times this. All very convenient, reassuring us of her Christian-credentials whilst behaving in a very un-Christian-like manner in a Muslim majority country.

bertsdinner · 04/04/2017 21:19

Has TM actually been shocked and appalled though, or even said very much? She just seems to have commented it was "ridiculous" in the reports I read.
John Sentamu has made stronger comments and even Jezza has chipped in ( commercialism going too far, in the Guardian).

NoLotteryWinYet · 04/04/2017 21:32

Gawd first I agreed with May and now Jeremy Corbyn. Not a great day!

therealmrsjolly · 06/04/2017 11:32

Our daughters school is a CofE school with links with the local NT property. Every year the NT allow the school to use their grounds for their own Easter egg hunt during school hours. They also allow them to use the grounds and magnificent backdrop of the Hall for the whole school photograph. Due to this news, the sanctimonious head has 'pulled' the egg hunt. The children are gutted and the parents are fuming. Such a short sighted reaction based on 'non news' !

squishysquirmy · 06/04/2017 12:24

What a weird decision for the head to make, mrsjolly. Sounds like the NT property were being very generous - has anyone pointed out to the head the actual facts of the story, and also that the School should be teaching children critical thinking, and not jumping to hasty conclusions based on provocative, disingenuous headlines?

FerdinandsRevenge · 06/04/2017 12:26

She's not going to use their kind offer of free grounds because someone didn't say Easter on the chocolate tat?

Sure some school will take them up. That's ridiculous

ActuallyThatsSUPREMECommander · 06/04/2017 12:48

I cannot believe that she's rabbiting on (sorry) about Cadbury's egg hunts being a problem because they don't give proper prominence to Christianity while she's in sodding Saudi Arabia. Surely she knows what Saudi Christians have to put up with? Actual real oppression. Up to and including the death penalty if someone accuses them of being Muslim-born apostates.

Orlantina · 06/04/2017 12:52

I wonder how many people would celebrate Easter if we didn't have chocolate eggs?

I also wonder how many people would celebrate Christmas if we didn't buy lots of presents, get drunk and eat lots of food?

squishysquirmy · 06/04/2017 13:01

Orlantina, I think that at both Christmas and Easter, there's effectively two parallel celebrations - the religious one, and the commercial/cultural one. We all choose whether we celebrate both, one or neither.
At Easter I will go to church, and eat Easter eggs but I don't consider the eating of Chocolate to be a religious act - its a bit of fun. Most people who celebrate Easter only by eating chocolate, who do not also go to church, are not really celebrating Easter in a religious way, even if some of them hypocritically froth away about Cadbury's wording.

merrymouse · 06/04/2017 13:20

even if some of them hypocritically froth away about Cadbury's wording.

This is one of the most frustrating things -

Weirdly Farage talked about Easter being part of our 'Judeo Christian culture' when Jesus only really features in Islam and Christianity, and Easter could be seen as the beginning of a bit of a rift between Christians and Jews.

You expect that from Farage though - why couldn't the archbishop check before stepping into an argument stirred up by right wing nationalists?

It's also very worrying that a school head would fall for this kind of thing. As well as the egg hunt the national trust is doing loads of other Easter themed events that have nothing to do with chocolate.

The only saving grace of the whole fiasco is that it's loads of free publicity for the egg hunts.

squishysquirmy · 06/04/2017 13:29

the "Judeo-Christian culture" comment about Easter from Farage is not only an indication of how ill informed he is, but is also a blatant, screaming dog-whistle.

We all know who he thinks our "Judeo-Christian" culture needs protection from, don't we? That's why he chose those specific words, instead of saying "Christian culture" or "British culture".

squishysquirmy · 06/04/2017 13:30

I wish Farage had given up publicity for Lent.

Orlantina · 06/04/2017 13:35

I bet Farage won't be going to church over Easter.

ArcheryAnnie · 06/04/2017 13:36

I think the Archbishop of York, who is not a Quaker, should butt out of commenting on what Quakers would or would not think, since he clearly knows fuck-all about them.

squishysquirmy · 06/04/2017 13:43

Farage hasn't always agreed with everything the Anglican church says, either. Just found this:
Last Christmas he boycotted church because he thought that the a service given by the Archbishop of Canterbury was "too negative"
inews.co.uk/essentials/nigel-farage-ignore-negative-archbishop-canterbury/
On one of the most holy days of the Christian calendar, Mr Farage urged people not to listen to the Most Rev Justin Welby, leader of the Church of England and the global communion of 85 million Anglican Christians, as he was too “negative” in his Christmas message, according to Mr Farage.

“Merry Christmas, Ignore all negative messages from the Archbishop of Canterbury and have a great day!” the MEP-turned-US-TV pundit said.

He later went on Talk Radio, telling James Whale he disliked Justin Welby’s message so much he had boycotted church this year.
....

“No wonder church attendances are plummeting, I’ve got a feeling the Archbishop is as out of touch as David Cameron was!”

Fucking hypocritical twat.

LadyPW · 06/04/2017 13:56

Has TM actually been shocked and appalled though, or even said very much? She just seems to have commented it was "ridiculous" in the reports I read.
But some people don't let facts get in the way of a good PM-bashing....

merrymouse · 06/04/2017 14:05

Here is TM making her views quite clear.

(For comparison, she wasn't so clear about condemning the harassment of judges)

Lexilooo · 06/04/2017 15:24

I'm sure this exact same story ran last year too with Cadbury removing the word easter from their eggs and it turned out to be a load of rubbish then too.

therealmrsjolly · 06/04/2017 16:06

It's caused quite a stir at school....the Head flatly refuses to discuss his decision with the parents or PTA. Short sighted and sanctimonious!! Now the PTA have been "offered" use of the local churchyard complete with headstones and carefully laid/planted flowers for 120 kids to trample over! And complete risk assessments and obtain some kind of insurance overnight. Hardly respectful or appropriate!! But it's that or disappoint all the children as the head won't even engage in discussion!

NoLotteryWinYet · 06/04/2017 16:20

seems bonkers as it's obvious that whatever you think, Cadbury is behind this, not the NT.

Orlantina · 06/04/2017 16:22

I hope the C of E is pleased they've caused this headteacher to ban this egg hunt at the NT place.

Well done them

How did you work that out? It's a corporate collaboration. They'll both have had input.
