to sit in my car at lunchtime?

cjt110 · 04/04/2017 09:42

I have changed my hours so that I now get 1 hour at lunch instead of 30 mins. In the previous 30 mins I would feel rushed to get my lunch and had no time to run errands hence why I changed my times.

Now, I find that I am done with my lunch after 30 mins and right now, craving time to myself, have found myself sitting in my car at lunch after I've eaten to avoid the lunchtime natter and just get some quiet time.

Is this a bit weird?

It was very usual in a few places I've worked. Some were smokers, some made phone calls (presumably private).

TisConfusion · 04/04/2017 09:51

I know people that do this. DP does it sometimes but most of the time he goes on a walk!

19lottie82 · 04/04/2017 09:51

Oooh I used to love doing that. A bit of peace and quiet with my sandwich and Jeremy Vine on Radio 2!

Sparklingbrook · 04/04/2017 09:53

Lots of people do it. Bit of escape from the building. DS1 (17) has just started driving to his P/T job at the weekend and said he was so excited he can now do this. Grin

Ah, glad I'm not a weirdo then. So, whats the rules - engine on or off? Windows up or down?

I often sit in the car when I take my dds to their hobby. I could sit in the waiting room, but if I'm not in the mood for chatting, I make a cup of tea and catch up on mumsnet!

Universitychallenging · 04/04/2017 09:58

I used to do this. I am anti social tho.

SuperRainbows · 04/04/2017 09:59

No rules. Do what you like.

I've stopped worrying what people think. It's liberating.

ShuttyTown · 04/04/2017 10:00

I used to love doing this when I worked before I was a SAHM. I'd get in the back seat so I could put my feet up and eat my lunch and read my book! Sometimes I'd set an alarm and have a little snooze too. Enjoy!

cjt110 · 04/04/2017 10:04

Backseat isnt an option as we have the carseat in the car Shutty but am wondering if I can get away with this - putting legs onto passenger seat without knocking the handbrake or gearstick!

The snooze sounds so tempting! Im shattered today - I even went to bed at 830, getting 9 hours sleep, and feel zombified!

My manager does this - I've caught him asleep!

Engine off - def.

foxessocks · 04/04/2017 10:06

I used to do this all the time! I used to grab some lovely food from the supermarket and then sit in my car and eat it either listening to the radio or reading my book.

NoraLouca · 04/04/2017 10:06

I do this quite a lot, it's the only time when I can just sit and read or daydream with nothing I should be doing and nobody talking to me.

ShuttyTown · 04/04/2017 10:10

I would think you'd be able to put your legs up like that @cjt110, just takes a bit of manoeuvring! If you're like me and a 15 min power nap helps then definitely go for it, just remember to set an alarm Wink

cjt110 · 04/04/2017 10:11

Im tempted to just hop in the car and drive it round the corner. I have annoying colleagues who would wave, knock, jeer as they pass.

PinkHeart59156816 · 04/04/2017 10:11

I don't think it's weird at all, in the car with some quiet or radio on in your lunch hour why not

cjt110 · 04/04/2017 10:11

Ooooh Im looking forward to lunchtime now. Might even make up my wrap and take it with me - be totally unsociable! Grin

GeorgiePeachie · 04/04/2017 10:12

Now the sun is out I eat my lunch and then read my book in the park

gingina · 04/04/2017 10:13

I do this but I drive to a lovely car park near the river and pop the radio on, eat my lunch and just chill. It's the only bit of me time I get in the day and I get quite grumpy if I have to meet someone for lunch or socialise with people at lunchtime.
I really think it keeps me sane so YA definitely NBU!!!

FooFighter99 · 04/04/2017 10:13

Me and another colleague do this, she very often has a snooze and sets an alarm.

I can't bear the thought of falling asleep and someone seeing me though.... it's a pretty busy car park and people have commented on seeing my colleague looking like she's passed out, some people have even knocked on the window to make sure she was ok!

I just sit playing games on my phone or reading my book Smile it's lovely to get away from the office.

morningconstitutional2017 · 04/04/2017 10:14

It sounds like a lovely idea when you can unwind properly to ready yourself for whatever they choose to throw at you when you get back to the office.

Is there somewhere nicer nearby that you could drive to? When I lived by the coast there would regularly be a few works vehicles near the promenade overlooking the sea. OTOH you don't want to have to get into a rush to get back on time or this would negate the relaxation.

cjt110 · 04/04/2017 10:14

GeorgiePeachie I work on a business park with not a lot around by way of places to sit and enjoy the sun. Sad

OP posts:
allegretto · 04/04/2017 10:14

Engine definitely off! Why would you have it on?

cjt110 · 04/04/2017 10:15

morningconstitutional2017 I will have a look/think whether there is. Alternatively, I could just feck off home for the lunchbreak. 10 mins home, 10 mins back. Home to myself in peace, quiet and comfort.....Hmm

OP posts:
cjt110 · 04/04/2017 10:16

allegretto So I dont run my battery flat if I have the radio on, or can make a speedy exit if someone stops to chat "Sorry, I'm just on my way out"
