to sit in my car at lunchtime?

I have changed my hours so that I now get 1 hour at lunch instead of 30 mins. In the previous 30 mins I would feel rushed to get my lunch and had no time to run errands hence why I changed my times.

Now, I find that I am done with my lunch after 30 mins and right now, craving time to myself, have found myself sitting in my car at lunch after I've eaten to avoid the lunchtime natter and just get some quiet time.

Is this a bit weird?

Nope.

YANU - there is nothing wrong with this. Time to yourself can be great esp. if you have a busy home life.

I take my lunch break sitting in my car in peace with a magazine. I think my colleagues think I'm wired and anti social but I don't mind as long as I get my relaxing break!

I used to love my lunch break sitting in my car. I went straight to a second job so it was my only break in a very long day. I had the radio on or read a book or relished eating a big sandwich and not having to try and eat tidily with people watching. I didn't park in my work car park either so I had more privacy. Now I would love an hour to myself in the middle of the day to spend like this.

The only person I know who did this had a private office so we all thought it a little weird that they went and sat in the car all lunch.

BunnyChickChocolateEgg · 05/04/2017 22:35

I used to do this, and it made a huge difference when the DCs were young and my sleep was disrupted. I too thought I was a bit odd and antisocial. A few years later, I stay in the office - just don't feel I need to escape so much - so I reckon you should do what makes you happy (though staying away all afternoon may be frowned on, so balance that with actually doing your job :-D)

I've been wondering this. Our lunches at work are really 'communal'. We all sit together and chat but all I want to do is find a quiet corner and read my book (work 8.30-5 and have a 4 yr old!) as it's the only quiet half hour I get all day. But I've heard my colleagues say 'do you remember that person that worked here who never came to lunch with us and just sat in their car? He was a right weirdo'! Blush

Engine off. It's the law, more than one minute in a stationary car is illegal.

I LOVE lunch alone. The best part of working from home - bliss Smile

PavlovianLunge · 06/04/2017 05:19

My first job was in an office of 60 people, one of whom would have his lunch break in his car. The general consensus was that it was a bit odd, but not a big deal.

That was 1980, nowadays with people (seemingly) having less time to themselves, the advent of smart phones, cars being more comfortable, etc, I think it's much more commonplace.

Cary2012 · 06/04/2017 10:25

When I used to have an hour for lunch I'd walk the ten minutes home everyday at lunchtime, cuppa and a toastie, bliss. But I would regularly doze off, wake up in a panic and run zombiefied back to work.

Now I only have 30 mins but I find a quiet place to read and eat my sandwich. Can't bear the staffroom, too many loud voices talking rubbish just for the sake of it. A few minutes quiet is enough to recharge and cope with the afternoon. I know some colleagues think I'm anti-social, but I get frazzled with loads of people in a room trying to outdo each other.

I sometimes drive to the nearby (outoftown/right by my work) shopping centre, get a McDonalds and park up to eat it. i only get 30mins so its such a luxury, not done it in a while and now i'm wishing i'd done it for todays lunch!

cjt110 · 06/04/2017 14:33

I went home at lunch today Grin Granted, I chopped some veg for tea and had a brew so not all that long at home (I needed to get petrol en route back to work) but what a difference it makes to the mood.

I used to do this when I had an hours lunch too. Was bliss to sit in peace by myself. A colleague used to keep a camping chair in the boot of car and go sit outside in the sun in peace in the summer too. We work in the dark all day so that was the best way to get a dose of sun in peace with no dc present too!!
