to sit in my car at lunchtime?

cjt110 · 04/04/2017 09:42

I have changed my hours so that I now get 1 hour at lunch instead of 30 mins. In the previous 30 mins I would feel rushed to get my lunch and had no time to run errands hence why I changed my times.

Now, I find that I am done with my lunch after 30 mins and right now, craving time to myself, have found myself sitting in my car at lunch after I've eaten to avoid the lunchtime natter and just get some quiet time.

Is this a bit weird?

I would so do it. SAHM now but I used to love going to lunch by myself, I would grab a coffee, eat, read and just chill. If I commuted to work by car then I would probably recline my chair and take a nap!

Wh0Kn0wsWhereTheTimeGoes · 04/04/2017 21:26

I do it occasionally at the supermarket, but in my current job I much prefer sitting round the kitchen table and nattering, or we do crosswords together and stuff. I also pop out there to make phone calls sometimes.

My previous job was a lot more stressful and I used to escape from the grotty industrial estate, nip down to the beach and lie there listening to the waves crashing onto the shingle for half an hour, now that was really relaxing.

Ellieboolou27 · 04/04/2017 22:33

Lots of my colleagues sit in their cars at lunch it's usually the slightly strange ones that do though Grin

cuirderussie · 04/04/2017 23:11

Not weird at all. My colleagues are fine but why on earth would I want to spend lunchtime with them? I go for a nice walk and listen to an audiobook. Yes, I work fulltime and have kids too, hardly get a minute!

BonnieF · 04/04/2017 23:45

I do this too. My employer isn't paying me for my lunch hour, so I'm out of the building, and my work phone is turned off.

I sit in my car eating my lunch and listening to nice Martha Kearney telling me all about Brexit on Radio 4. If it's PMQs it must be Wednesday Grin. Then it's time for a walk if the weather's decent or a couple of chapters of my book if it's raining. Sometimes I pop to the supermarket.

Anything to avoid yet another hour sitting at my desk staring at my computer screen.

Maybe some people think I'm odd or antisocial. Whatever. I could not possibly care less.

Scottishchick39 · 05/04/2017 00:21

I live a ten minute drive from work, I nip home at lunchtime and put our supper in the slow cooker or put some washing on. Still plenty of time for a sandwich before I've to head back.

Originalfoogirl · 05/04/2017 00:24

When I parked my car at work, I'd use it to nap at lunch time 😂

cjt110 · 05/04/2017 08:31

So... Whos in the "Lunchtime car club" with me today?! I have been dying to get to work just so I can have my hour to myself. Have brought my Adele biography to read whilst Im out :)

When my mother was dying, I used to drive down to the local Wickes, park in a far corner and just sit and cry.

emmakc1977 · 05/04/2017 17:45

I have a four minute walk for my commute but after reading all these posts I'm quite tempted not to actually go inside my home at lunch time but to sit outside in the car instead.

When I go home I only end up emptying the washing machine and tidying up before the kids come home and mess it all up again. Sitting in the car eating a sarny and reading a book sounds amazing!!

chocbinger · 05/04/2017 17:48

I do it as much as I can!it helps me relax and face the afternoon a bit fresher. I sometimes say I am going to make a phonecall but I don't see why I should justify it? pathetic humans aren't we? Confused

Bethan2 · 05/04/2017 17:48

I used to do this as I had an intensive job talking to people and just wanted a bit of silence! x

Xmasbaby11 · 05/04/2017 18:06

I'd rather stay at my desk than sit in my car, though I don't spend all day every day at my desk. I enjoy reading news online. Or mumsnet. I'd find it depressing to eat a meal in my car, I'm not sure why!

I usually eat with my colleagues though unless I'm feeling really antisocial.

Juney21 · 05/04/2017 18:17

Used to do this all the time. One lunchtime I listened to the radio for 45 mins and ate sammich at the same time. I'd left the engine switched off. When I went to start the car after work the battery was dead.

I leave the engine running now if listening to radio.

PicturesJane · 05/04/2017 18:31

I sometimes do this ignore I go shopping and listen to the radio four play. One day I got so engrossed on a Sunday that by the time it had finished the supermarket had shut for the afternoon - no roast dinner !

pollymere · 05/04/2017 18:33

I'm in charge of a school library. As the kids are outside at lunch, it's not uncommon for me to be found in the library at the end of lunch just for a bit of peace!

Daydream007 · 05/04/2017 18:43

Not weird at all. I've done this when I've needed some quiet time to switch off.

cheminotte · 05/04/2017 19:02

I don't drive to work but have found there's normally some green space available within walking distance. Pre internet I'd just wander around in different directions until I found it, now I look for green patches on Google maps. Yesterday I was in the city centre for a course but found the canal less than 5 mins away.

Kc1009 · 05/04/2017 19:26

No matter where i worked what break i had i always sat in my car even before children, peace and quiet not stupid small talk just me on my own enjoying my silence. Put my feet up on the passanger side and just relaxed. Read a book, do a puzzle book anything better then being stuck in the office.

caringcarer · 05/04/2017 20:39

I like reading on my Kindle when in my car waiting for child in 1 hour sport club. It is just not worth driving home and back again. Enjoy your 30 mins of me time. When it gets a bit warmer you might also enjoy walking.

Deidre21 · 05/04/2017 20:42

Completely normal. It's always good to have alone time even if you're doing nothing. I have an hour a day to myself and I use the time to just read or page through magazines update to do lists or just think.

kennycat · 05/04/2017 20:53

I used to do this when I worked in an office. Partly to eat my lunch away from the brain draining jibber jabber and oartly to warm up as the office was an ice box!

Perfectly acceptable behaviour I think. Crack on.

catarinapovre5 · 05/04/2017 20:59

I do this! Love it, engine off, windows down (weather permitting) radio on, what's not to like? Enjoy.

MrsPinkCock · 05/04/2017 21:18

I had a colleague that went to their car to nap at lunch.

Not weird. I've done it to listen to the radio.

Chachaow · 05/04/2017 21:41

I'm the only person who does this out of ten or so colleagues and everyone thinks I'm very weird and antisocial. It does slightly bother me but not enough to stop me doing it. Also, I work in a mortuary - and apparently I'M the weird one who doesn't like to eat in one Confused
