to sit in my car at lunchtime?

cjt110 · 04/04/2017 09:42

I have changed my hours so that I now get 1 hour at lunch instead of 30 mins. In the previous 30 mins I would feel rushed to get my lunch and had no time to run errands hence why I changed my times.

Now, I find that I am done with my lunch after 30 mins and right now, craving time to myself, have found myself sitting in my car at lunch after I've eaten to avoid the lunchtime natter and just get some quiet time.

Is this a bit weird?

I used to have a 50min lunch (only 30 now unfortunately) and I used to travel the 10mins home and back. Half an hour at home really breaks up the day.

gingina · 04/04/2017 16:55

@Batwomanrisesagain that is just fabulous

cjt110 · 04/04/2017 16:55

dotdotdotmustdash See, I would LOVE to do this but it would effectively mean my petrol costs are doubled. Perhaps I could do this once a week....

Engine definitely off! Why would you like to stink up the air around you for no reason Confused

FataliePorkman · 04/04/2017 17:25

I do it OP. Sometimes I go home to walk the dogs around the block quickly. Sometimes though I've left and someone has nicked my parking space and then I've had to find somewhere to park my car and been late back into work after lunch- so something to consider if parking is limited.

ItsNachoCheese · 04/04/2017 17:53

My dad has a 30min lunch break and he sits in his car and has his lunch and a smoke in peacw

jcsp · 04/04/2017 17:55

I do. I'm retired but my wife is an educational consultant and visits schools.

Sometimes I go and sit in the car. I get the kettle on, iPad out link it to my phone and read the papers.

If it's sunny I take it to a nice place, roof up and take in the air.

It's a camper! Go for it. CP

Sofabitch · 04/04/2017 18:05

I keep a pillow and blanket in my car for just this exact reason !

I could never be bothered making up packed lunches so would (and still do) buy my lunch most days. When I went home I just ate a quick sandwich from whatever was in the kitchen. Huge saving and took care of petrol cost.

ShitIForgotToUntick · 04/04/2017 18:09

I did this in my last job after a particularly loud bloke who loved the sound of his own voice started. It went right through me and i literally couldn't bare to be in the same room as him. The peace and quiet was lovely. Tried the going home thing too but found it awful having to drag myself back to work. Went to the park up the road in the nice weather and sat in my car on rainy days. I don't get a lunch anymore as i work 6 hour shifts now, on the plus side I'm half a stone lighter Grin

ForalltheSaints · 04/04/2017 18:35

I would be tempted to go home myself if in your shoes. Or in warmer weather, go for a walk and eat somewhere else.

TisMeTheLadFromTheBar · 04/04/2017 18:44

Option 2 if traffic allows. Home, eat in peace and relax. Set the alarm so you're back on time. Smile

TisMeTheLadFromTheBar · 04/04/2017 18:52

gingina I know it was a typo but I snorted at that. Grin

Yanbu, but engine off definitely. I would feel it was too wasteful to drive home unless I could have at least an hour there.

Flambola · 04/04/2017 19:32

Oh I would love to do this if I could. My manager sits next to me and doesn't ever shut the fuck up even when I tell him I'm reading and on my lunch and I don't want to talk to him!

rosybell · 04/04/2017 19:42

This is worse.. the other day it was pouring with rain and I couldn't face our claustrophobic lunch room and chit chat with colleagues so I hid in the toilet and read my phone for 20 mins!
I cycle to work so no car to escape to and just need alone time. That's weird isn't it?!

outabout · 04/04/2017 20:13

Not wierd, chance to listen to radio etc.
Engine OFF, wastes money and might actually be illegal as there was legislation about 'idling time', not sure it applies to private cars but it ought to.

YoungYolandaYorgensen39 · 04/04/2017 20:28

I'm a lunch time car-sitter. I'm a miserable sod though and rarely want to chat. I'd rather read in peace or listen to a podcast.

WipsGlitter · 04/04/2017 20:32

I'm going to back the trend and say I think this is really weird!! We have one colleague who sits in her car before work starts and everyone thinks that's really odd!!

IsangforLadyArcher · 04/04/2017 20:33

I don't normally work long enough for a lunch break but love sitting ing my car in the warm weather, windows down and radio on.

Whilst waiting for eldest DD I kicked off my shoes and spread out over the front seats. Not very comfortable but did the trick for 30 mins.

Pepperedpig · 04/04/2017 20:47

I used to do this every day when I worked. Our staff room was really small, cramped and hot and I hated eating in there.

WotsitWig · 04/04/2017 20:58

I used to sit in my car at lunch (now use public transport). My car was a peaceful haven when I was pregnant and needed somewhere to rest my eyes over lunch Wink

sharktoothcushion · 04/04/2017 21:06

Where I can I take my full hour in my car, I eat my lunch, go on the Internet and even watch TV on my Ipad or phone.

Unfortunately my job is quite demanding, so often have a sandwich at my desk, but when I do get an hours lunch break, its in my car.

Once I even took a nap!

I thought it was strange pre parenthood, 3.5 Yeats later, full time working mother of one demanding preschooler, lunch breaks are my sanctuary.

Just ensure you set an alarm if your having a nap, I was once vey late for a meeting.

Beaniebeemer · 04/04/2017 21:08

I've always done it! I couldn't stay in the office for 8.5 hours a day!
