To not care what colour my passport is?

Apparently one of the great things about Brexit is we'll be getting blue passports back (personally don't remember blue passports but whatever). AIBU to really not give a shit? Quote from the article:

Conservative MP Andrew Rosindell, chairman of the Flags and Heraldry Committee, told the paper: “It’s a matter of identity. Having the pink European passports has been a source of humiliation. It merged us into one European identity, which isn’t what we are

WTF does this even mean? "What it means to be British" is apparently a black blue passport

Cos it's the Empire,isn't it?

Except the sun set on that a long time ago

TheNaze73 · 02/04/2017 14:03

YANBU, I give zero fucks about this rhetoric spouted by little Englanders. I'm more concerned with the impending queues at airports to be honest

HardcoreLadyType · 02/04/2017 14:22

Here's a link to all the passports of the world.

I think the current UK one looks quite distinguished, actually.

heron98 · 02/04/2017 14:25

I had no idea passports used to blue. Who the fuck cares? Brexit is a load of shit. I have been avoiding reading the news because I feel so depressed about it.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 02/04/2017 15:17

ooh I like Mali and Ethiopia! And Romania is definitely pink.

fakenamefornow · 02/04/2017 15:41

That bloke's a complete tit.

I don't give a shit what colour my passport is, I do care about the rights that a passport gives me, rights that are being taken away from me and my children.

wowfudge · 02/04/2017 15:43

Fgs - whatever changes are made will be phased in, just like the EU passports and driving licences were. A lot of fuss about not a lot.

whoputthecatout · 02/04/2017 15:50

I'm of the advanced years where you have to renew your driving licence every three years (so they can be sure you haven't gone ga ga or anything). Mine was due for renewal just after Brexit, so I sent off the form right at the end of June last year.

Back came my photo driving licence within a week with, not the yellow star circle of the EU in the corner, but a union flag instead. Didn't waste any time there did they?

MrsTeller · 02/04/2017 16:03

I remember being slightly miffed when I got my first passport in about 1990 and it wasn't the "traditional" dark blue British passport, I think they started phasing them out about 1988.

I got over it.

AllMyBestFriendsAreMetalheads · 02/04/2017 16:08

How humiliating for you MrsT Grin

StarryIllusion · 02/04/2017 16:09

Oh ffs it could be any colour of the rainbow for all I care.

Downtheroadfirstonleft · 02/04/2017 16:21

I've met Rosindell several times and he is an absolute tit (& I'm a Tory..).

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/04/2017 16:28

I have a blue passport. All you have to do is spend a crap ton of money, time and effort emigrating to Canada. Then you can have a nice blue passport with none of those icky girl-pink germs on it and your enormous Great British penis won't shrivel and fall off. We even have a Union Flag on the front and EVERYTHING. And the fleur de lis as well but don't tell him that.

I would rather still have the EU than the UK blue passport back, which won't be the same anyway because the days of the enormous, hard-cover are gone.

I was in Venice last year and tried unsuccessfully to get money changed without a passport on me. Until I got out my EU driving licence. THAT worked. People forget all the little things that are easier because the UK is in Europe.

gobberz · 02/04/2017 17:38

*I think you're missing the point. We obviously will no longer be able to use EU passports so they will have to be changed, regardless if they go back to dark blue or orange with pink dots. The same applies to driving licenses and car registration plates which will have to remove the EU flag.

It's a non-story, like so many anti-Brexit stories.*

It's on the FRONT page of the express as a pro brexit story. They clearly think it's a wonderful outcome of brexit.

OP posts:
CountMagnus · 02/04/2017 17:48

That's because the Express is a useless rag and it's lazy journalism and plays on nationalistic ideals whipped up by anti EU Tory MPs.

It's a cost that would have happened anyway, as the current contract to design and print UK passports ends in 2019/20.

Ilovewillow · 02/04/2017 17:51

Well since I was born in Gibraltar I might hold fire on getting a new passport full stop, might be safer all round!

MrsTeller · 02/04/2017 18:40

AllMyBestFriendsAreMetalheads Very :)

HeadlessGummyBears · 02/04/2017 19:11

How is it a non-story? Confused

Conservative MP Andrew Rosindell, chairman of the Flags and Heraldry Committee, told the paper: “It’s a matter of identity. Having the pink European passports has been a source of humiliation. It merged us into one European identity, which isn’t what we are.

“The old dark blue design was a distinct, clear and bold statement of what it means to be British, which is just what our citizens need as they travel abroad after Brexit.”

YouKnowNothingJS · 02/04/2017 19:14

They are pink inside? I hate the idea of not being European.

Am I being stupid? Regardless of whether the result was Leave or Remain ... we will always be European right?

We're leaving the European Union ... not Europe. Right? Confused

ShelaghTurner · 02/04/2017 19:21

My UK expired years ago so I use my Irish one. Which is 'pink'. Couldn't care less!

And yes, all this leaving Europe stuff. Are we going to all run down to Dover and punt ourselves further away from France? Think people forget that we'll always be a European country.

RebelRogue · 02/04/2017 19:37

Romanian passports are not pink. They're the same burgundy as UK ones now. Just saying Grin

Davros · 02/04/2017 19:38

This week we've been told we need to cut what's available on prescription to save £128m, but we've got £500m hanging about to pay for changes to passports. It's an absolute joke.
Peanuts compared to the £80billion that will be spent on HS2 which is an outdated Labour govt vanity project

RebelRogue · 02/04/2017 19:45

Oh yeah, because in all this mess it's the NHS that's a vanity project. :)

GloriaV · 02/04/2017 19:54

I could swear I used to have a black passport (very smart, hard cover) - the burgundy ones were not as nice.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 02/04/2017 20:00

It was a really really dark blue

I am 47 and have kept my old one

It was lovely though and you used to get it stamped
