To not care what colour my passport is?

Apparently one of the great things about Brexit is we'll be getting blue passports back (personally don't remember blue passports but whatever). AIBU to really not give a shit? Quote from the article:

Conservative MP Andrew Rosindell, chairman of the Flags and Heraldry Committee, told the paper: “It’s a matter of identity. Having the pink European passports has been a source of humiliation. It merged us into one European identity, which isn’t what we are

Humiliating? Really? ^

The current contract expires in 2019, the year the UK is set to leave the EU and the passport is routinely redesigned every five years to guard against counterfeiting apparently so it's no big deal.

This.

The money, or a large proportion of it, would have been spent designing the passport anyway.

BreakWindandFire · 02/04/2017 13:04

We could have had a blue passport at anytime without leave the EU. It was entirely the UK government's choice to go with burgundy to be consistent with other EU countries.

Croatia is in the EU and has black passports.

£500 million to redesign a passport. That is a lot of money in any circumstances.

Hulder · 02/04/2017 13:14

Even if the passport was pink which it isn't why would this be humiliating and blue not?

Is it because pink is for girls and blue is for boys?

theothercatpurred · 02/04/2017 13:16

I used to like the one-year passports you could get by walking into the Post Office and smiling sweetly or something.

Come to think of it, weren't they pink?

SoupDragon · 02/04/2017 13:16

Perhaps they should run a Blue Peter competition to redesign this important legal document.

£500 million is a lot of money. How can it cost £500 million to redesign it?

blackteasplease · 02/04/2017 13:18

I remember the old passports as being black. Were they v dark blue then?

My grandfather's Italian passport was a lovely dark green.

The EU passports are burgundy though. Could never ve called pink. But it says a lot about this guys that he thinks pink is humiliating.

cardibach · 02/04/2017 13:20

It would have cost to redesign anyway, yes - but as an EU document the cost would be shared. Now we will have to cover it ourselves. Isn't that the difference? Like with many things, we lose the economies of scale and the ability to spread costs around.

RedSandYellowSand · 02/04/2017 13:22

I think there are only 4 passport colours used across the world - blue, burgundy, black and green.
They are always changing the design anyway. My new passport is very different inside (pages and photo page) compared to DS2, who got a new passport about 18 months ago.

blackteasplease · 02/04/2017 13:22

I can't think we would go back to imperial measurements. Generations of school children have been taught metric now.

And imperial is such a stupid bullshit system anyway.

blackteasplease · 02/04/2017 13:22

I actually quite fancy a yellow one.

Bythepowerof · 02/04/2017 13:23

If your going to quote figures surely you should also quote what that figure consists of? Otherwise it's just a number that anyone can pluck out of the air.

I can't see it matters if they get changed at renewal. Anyone carrying an old style passport still has UK printed in it. Hopefully passport control can read enough to stamp it or ask for payment ( like crossing into Switzerland) . Once you are in your in aren't you so it won't make any difference to moving around.

alltouchedout · 02/04/2017 13:23

I think lauding this as a Brexit positive makes you look like a tit who voted leave for shallow and weak reasons. I'm sure many people who voted leave did so after careful thought and for serious and well considered reasons and wonder why there is an assumption that leavers are ignorant. Getting excited over passport colours would be one good reason why.

daisypond · 02/04/2017 13:24

Why won't everyone have to have their passports changed? I don't see that we can carry on using a passport that says European Union on it if we're no longer in the EU in two years' time. Whole thing is getting too depressingly real now.

CountMagnus · 02/04/2017 13:30

It's most likely to be a £500 million contract to redesign and produce passports for a 10 year period.

The last 10 year deal signed in 2010 was for £400 million.

acatcalledjohn · 02/04/2017 13:30

Does the passport really need to be redesigned? Surely we can continue using the current version and just change the colour of the cover? It should not need to cost £500m, that money is better spent on whatever helps support our economy.

Trade deals
NHS
Education

Humiliating Hmm. The guy doesn't know the meaning of the word when he claimed expenses using his childhood home.

Fucking hypocrite.

AllMyBestFriendsAreMetalheads · 02/04/2017 13:35

When I got married, I had 8 years left on my passport, and I was told that it was not possible to change my name on it. I'd have to buy a new 10 year passport and those 8 years would basically be lost.

If we can't do it when people change their name, there's no way we can replace the passports of every single passport holder in the country. There would be outrage if it was announced that everyone would have to fork out for a brand new passport because we'd left the EU.

Iwantacampervan · 02/04/2017 13:40

I liked the old passports as they had the names visible - when you're trying to hand out passports at customs it made life a lot easier. When we changed before it was only at renewal.

Summerisdone · 02/04/2017 13:42

No fucks given here on what colour my passport is. Granted I'm too young to ever recall anything but the current passports we use, however I've never felt it 'humiliating' to use a European passport Hmm and I voted for Brexit.

SapphireSeptember · 02/04/2017 13:44

I only got my passport last year, (it's my first one and I sent off the application form on the day of the referendum, ironically enough,) so I won't be happy at having to replace it sooner than I thought I'd have to. I'd also happily pay to retain my EU citizenship as that's what I voted for. Anyone who thinks the current passport is pink needs their eyes testing. (Can we get dark purple instead of blue? That would be cool. Might annoy some people though. Grin )

MoreThanUs · 02/04/2017 13:52

Rorty, I agree but you're wasting your time here! It's just another thing for remainers to get upset about and try and take the moral high ground over.

BizzyFizzy · 02/04/2017 13:53

The old passports were black - "hard blacks"

AllMyBestFriendsAreMetalheads · 02/04/2017 13:59

I know we're entering the realms of what colour is the dress now, but even the picture at the top of the article looks black not blue.

Carrying on from his comments about humiliated he feels:
"“The old dark blue design was a distinct, clear and bold statement of what it means to be British, which is just what our citizens need as they travel abroad after Brexit.”

WTF does this even mean? "What it means to be British" is apparently a black blue passport.

80sMum · 02/04/2017 14:01

I'm with you, OP. Ffs, who the hell cares what colour a passport is?!

I wonder how much money will be spent on teams of designers designing a new passport and logo and then there will be all the added expense of getting supplies of the new cover and changing all the print layouts etc.

Of course, if we're leaving the EU (I still can't quite believe that we are) then presumably we can't keep our EU-style passports after 2019, so we have no choice but to redesign. What a waste of money!
