To not care what colour my passport is?

Apparently one of the great things about Brexit is we'll be getting blue passports back (personally don't remember blue passports but whatever). AIBU to really not give a shit? Quote from the article:

Conservative MP Andrew Rosindell, chairman of the Flags and Heraldry Committee, told the paper: “It’s a matter of identity. Having the pink European passports has been a source of humiliation. It merged us into one European identity, which isn’t what we are

What a waste of money!!! Angry

I could think of a few ways in which they could be better spent.

Hulder · 02/04/2017 10:57

Personally I can't remember my blue passport and have no feeling for it whatever.

And presumably they can't change the size of it as it has to fit the size of the machines, not just at our airports but internationally.

So it's stuck being smaller.

PlinkyTheFairyWitch · 02/04/2017 11:01

Meh, they'll have to redesign it anyway once Scotland, Ireland, Gibraltar and the Falklands are no longer part of the UK, leaving just England and (probably) Wales. Maybe something fun with St. George and a dragon.

So then we can all sit around, with our kids being caned in schools, criminals being hanged, buying things in ounces with shillings and illuminated by inefficient incandescent lightbulbs. That will be worth it, right? Right?

Okumara · 02/04/2017 11:02

Passport size and general layout is defined by international (ICAO) standards so that won't change. And they are constantly redesigning the passport to keep ahead of forgers. I don't care about the colour, it doesn't affect my feelings at all, definitely more important things to get upset about

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 02/04/2017 11:03

I liked the old blue ones

But i dont really care, cant get a new one til after everything settles in years and years time surely?

I dont want a yellow one or pink...or white as that would get grubby

Grey would be nice...or pick your own colour

Obviously i do care Smile

Meanwhile £4bn cuts announced today including to widowed parents, the sick and young 18-21 year olds:
www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/benefit-freeze-cuts-austerity-measures-welfare-state-inflation-a7661196.html

Priorities? Passports over welfare? I'd choose welfare every time.

TattyCat · 02/04/2017 11:12

For those worrying about just having renewed their passports - you won't need to pay for a new passport when it changes. The passport design will only change at the point of renewal, so there won't be a need for 40 million (or whatever) people to renew their passports at the same time! God - can you imagine the carnage if they had to be changed immediately!! Grin

PigletJohn · 02/04/2017 11:14

It's nice to know that Conservative MP Andrew Rosindell has an answer to the question "What is the advantage of resigning from the EU"

ForTheSakeOfFuck · 02/04/2017 11:16

Pink?? I thought it was some sort of maroony purple. Obviously its very pinkness is offensive all by itself. Hmm

TheFairyCaravan · 02/04/2017 11:20

I'm irrationally pissed off about this, although I did say to DH on June 24th that this would happen.

This week we've been told we need to cut what's available on prescription to save £128m, but we've got £500m hanging about to pay for changes to passports. It's an absolute joke.

Agerbilatemycardigan · 02/04/2017 11:21

Humiliating? Really? Confused

SoupDragon · 02/04/2017 11:23

My old hard cover passport almost black. The pages are a pale blue though.

And it's handwritten! It expired in 1994.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 02/04/2017 11:24

Pink??? Someone needs their eyes tested. The old blue ones were gorgeous, but it wasn't just the colour, it was the whole design of them.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 02/04/2017 11:25

Hang on!!! I've GOT it! I reckon that the new PP should be like those musical cards. You open it up and it plays "God Save the Queen' instead of 'Happy Birthday'.

BarbarianMum · 02/04/2017 11:27

God you lot are a bunch of unpatriotic lefty whiners. I personally can think of no better use for 500 million than a redesigning the UK passport. Except perhaps spending the money on union jacks (and then another 500 million on a new flag once Scotland leaves).

Make Britain great again. 《Cheers, cheers》

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 02/04/2017 11:29

Well we need to redisign them as I expect the EU would be pissed off if we kept the passports which said we were still in the EU! I voted IN by the way, but it's just common sense to change them.

I remember the old blue passports and liked them, so glad we will go back to that.

justanotheryoungmother · 02/04/2017 11:31

Genuine question; if they change them now and then Scotland leave the U.K., will they have to be changed again?? For both Scottish and English/Welsh/Northern Irish people?Hmm

RortyCrankle · 02/04/2017 11:40

I think you're missing the point. We obviously will no longer be able to use EU passports so they will have to be changed, regardless if they go back to dark blue or orange with pink dots. The same applies to driving licenses and car registration plates which will have to remove the EU flag.

It's a non-story, like so many anti-Brexit stories.

PerpetualStudent · 02/04/2017 11:45

New passports should be a different colour once we have left the EU, as it will make it easier to have a UK passport only queue at airports assuming that we have them.

Um, if passport control is planning to only check the colour of the cover I'd imagine we'd soon have bigger things to worry about...

DJBaggySmalls · 02/04/2017 11:46

RortyCrankle Complaining about spending £500 million on this is not missing the point. It is the point of this thread.
And the reasons given by MP Andrew Rosindell in favour are ridiculous. Does that not worry you? Pink passports? Humiliation? Seriously?

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 02/04/2017 11:49

just

I think so

Which is why i dont think it will happen immediately

Or if it does it will have to happen again!!

PlinkyTheFairyWitch · 02/04/2017 11:51

It's not a non-story at all. The blue passport issue was one of those covered in this poll of leave voters and is indicative of the nostalgic and dangerous nonsense behind Brexit itself. I think it takes a very special kind of person to be 'humiliated' by a 'pink' passport.

sobeyondthehills · 02/04/2017 11:55

New passports should be a different colour once we have left the EU, as it will make it easier to have a UK passport only queue at airports assuming that we have them.

I am hoping you are being sarcastic. If not why do you imagine that we are going to have UK passports only queue? What makes us fucking special over the rest of the world?

LordRothermereBlackshirtCunt · 02/04/2017 11:57

Our passports will have to change in other ways as well - we'll have to find a new name for ourselves once Scotland becomes independent, since "Great Britain" is the name given to the entire island. Perhaps "Little Britain" would be a fitting name for the rump of the UK?

LordRothermereBlackshirtCunt · 02/04/2017 12:01

The passport design will only change at the point of renewal, so there won't be a need for 40 million (or whatever) people to renew their passports at the same time!
Are we sure about this? Surely this would need to be agreed to by the EU, since there would be millions of UK citizens travelling on EU passports when they are no longer EU citizens?
