I wonder: If Hillary were president and had ordered the strikes, how many who are praising it now instead would have been condemning it?

PausingFlatly · 07/04/2017 16:58

Glad your friend is OK, Natsku. Here's hoping the toll doesn't rise.

Natsku · 07/04/2017 17:05

It's a bit freaky to get one's head round, but MN is genuinely a frontline in international politics at the moment

I come to this thread first to check the news and/or check if my understanding of an event is right. OH keeps asking me how I know things but feels a bit weird to say "Well Mumsnet said..." Grin

The Stockholm event is hitting home more because its so close to home. I know any event happening in my town is extremely unlikely but if something can happen in Stockholm then something might happen in Helsinki, or Tampere where I have family/friends so it feels more worrying now. Especially as lately there's been a lot of trouble over here concerning Far Right Activists and refugees.

AcrossthePond55 · 07/04/2017 17:07

Our most rabid (and vocal) Trumpet friend has gone mysteriously silent on Twitter, FB, etc. He's the one who's the most "America First Only, fuck the rest of them brown guys". Always on about Trumpenstein being wise to stay uninvolved with the problems of 'those countries'. Wonder how he's going to 'spin' this one?

I'm looking forward to the next Trump popularity poll.

Do pp really think the air strikes against Syria will affect his popularity ratings among his supporters? He's done so many awful things and they don't seem to have affected him!

cozietoesie · 07/04/2017 17:15

People generally need to have a 'public reason' for shifting, Destinys. One which they feel they can live with. This may provide such a reason.

originalbiglymavis · 07/04/2017 17:23

I do like the way Putin is quoted as saying the the US air strikes were carried out on the basis of 'trumped up' evidence. I do hope he said it English and it's not just a translators license

PausingFlatly · 07/04/2017 17:24

Yes, that's very true about people needing a "public reason" to justify their shift, cozie.

I've been wondering what it would be with 45, because "he lies" was already on the table before the election. Not that the "reason" has to make any sense, of course. It can just be "because Syria" or "because sunshine".

AcrossthePond55 · 07/04/2017 17:26

I do for a certain % of them Destiny. There are some really, really isolationist-thinking people amongst his 'fans'. And many of his 'fans' are 'single issue' people. If he 'violates' their single issue, be it guns, immigration, ACA repeal, America First, they will desert him, just as they deserted Ryan, Rubio et al during the run up to the nomination as Trump was covering all their bases at that point. He lost the ACA repeal crowd although it appears he's trying to woo them back with the 'talks' with the Freedom Caucus.

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 07/04/2017 17:30

Would they go for anyone else, Across? Or are they more likely to hunker down belligerently?

BiglyBadgers · 07/04/2017 17:34

The thing with this destiny is that all the awful things he did before were awful to us but exactly what his alt-right supporters wanted him to do. This is different because it is the first time he has done something which fundamentally goes against the alt-right agenda. That is why they are rounding on him for it, not because it is another addition on the long list of crazy.

BiglyBadgers · 07/04/2017 17:49

Sooo....While all this Syria business is kicking off what has happened with the China visit?

cozietoesie · 07/04/2017 17:54

Just Yadda, Yadda, Yadda so far as I can see. (But 45 apparently thinks he's made a new friend.)

On some level, I hate the thought of the power Trump and Kushner must be feeling at being able to order the deaths of people by ordering the airstrikes.

originalbiglymavis · 07/04/2017 18:18

I did wonder if it was a Big Show to quash thoughts that Trump was in cahoots with Putin. Therefore it's not a huge leap to querying an external force orchestrating the sarin attack?

It's interesting to note all these countries saying they support the strikes and agree it needed to be done.... then why weren't they calling for it?

GingerIvy · 07/04/2017 18:34

And more importantly, why didn't THEY do it?
