America: ban Syrian refugees, then bomb #Syria because you're "concerned" about Syrians....

Orlantina · 07/04/2017 10:40

I wonder how Trump will react when children are killed by US aircraft....

BoreOfWhabylon · 07/04/2017 10:46

On the other hand, maybe Putin didn't know and is now sufficiently pissed off that he will ensure the whole Russiagate can of worms is opened for scutiny and SCROTUS will be impeached/charged with treason

Anything could happen.

Lweji · 07/04/2017 10:46

Will react?

You don't have to ask, just look at how he reacted to these two:

US confirms coalition strike in Mosul district where dozens reported killed

Silence by Trump.

Survivors in Yemen describe horror of U.S. raid which killed at least 26. Human toll included U.S. Navy Seal, 10 children, 9 women

"winning mission" - says Trump

Lweji · 07/04/2017 10:50

But now Putin is complaining to the UN

Moscow calls for urgent UN Security Council meeting over US air strikes in Syria

www.politico.eu/article/putin-us-strikes-on-syria-violate-international-law-harm-us-russia-ties/

And this is significant:

"The ministry called for an urgent U.N. Security Council meeting, and said it has suspended a flight safety memorandum that prevents conflict between Russian and U.S. forces."

Lweji · 07/04/2017 11:05

Donald J. Trump ✔ @realDonaldTrump
AGAIN, TO OUR VERY FOOLISH LEADER, DO NOT ATTACK SYRIA - IF YOU DO MANY VERY BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN & FROM THAT FIGHT THE U.S. GETS NOTHING!
2:20 PM - 5 Sep 2013

I have to agree with him on this one. Wink

Orlantina · 07/04/2017 11:13

Funny how being in charge and seeing a bigger picture and having a massive military can change an opinion.

Lweji · 07/04/2017 11:22

I'm just not sure he's seeing a bigger picture now.

Was it really a considered act, or a shot from the hip?

Orlantina · 07/04/2017 11:27

Trump's tweets are coming back to haunt him.

TheClaws · 07/04/2017 11:30

Lweji, if confronted with that tweet, Trump would say "that was then, this is now." Standard defence. "Times change. The world changes."

But, no. The world does change, and we along with it, but that doesn't excuse him from any such dramatic change of position. It just exposes him completely as a spiteful fraud without any politics.

theintercept.com/2016/05/12/donald-trump-calls-hillary-clinton-trigger-happy-as-she-courts-neocons/

DONALD TRUMP DERIDED Hillary Clinton’s hawkish foreign policy record over the weekend, a glimpse into a potential general election strategy of casting Clinton as the more likely of the two to take the nation to war.

Just moments after maligning Syrian refugees at a rally in Lynden, Washington, Trump pivoted into a tirade against Clinton as a warmonger

“On foreign policy, Hillary is trigger happy,” Trump told the crowd. “She is, she’s trigger happy. She’s got a bad temperament,” he said. “Her decisions in Iraq, Syria, Egypt, Libya have cost trillions of dollars, thousands of lives and have totally unleashed ISIS.”

And he expressed a rarely heard appreciation for the “other side to this story,” noting: “Thousands of lives, yes, for us, but probably millions of lives in all fairness, folks” for the people of the Middle East.

Trump implied that casualties inflicted by the U.S. military were far higher than reported. “They bomb a city” and “it’s obliterated, obliterated,” he said. “They’ll say nobody was killed. I’ll bet you thousands and thousands of people were killed every time you see that television set.”

“If we would’ve done nothing,” Trump argued, “we would’ve been in much better shape.”

Lweji · 07/04/2017 11:48

I think it's fine to have one position and then change it.
What is not fine is to be a jerk about it.

BiglyBadgers · 07/04/2017 12:11

If this was a considered reaction with a clearly thought out long-term strategy to back it up, preferably approved by Congress but at the very least come to from discussion with all the relevant parties in and out of Government, I would not be totally against any military action in Syria. The problem is that knee jerk bomb dropping rarely has any positive long term impact, in fact it just serves to inflame an already complex and volatile situation. If there is no plan for how they are going to handle the fall out (which there clearly isn't) we are all going to end up in a big pile of trouble.

My feeling is that Trump has just realised the dead cat isn't working and shoved a grenade up its arse while shouting "IGNORE THAT SUCKERS!!!". He is panicking and this is just the sort of thing we all suspected would happen when he started to panic.

BiglyBadgers · 07/04/2017 12:26

Corbyn seems to be the only person so far with a considered response. Nevertheless he will get roasted for it.

Labour split over American missile strike in Syria as Jeremy Corbyn comes out against military action
www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/04/07/labour-split-american-missile-strike-syria-jeremy-corbyn-comes/

Mr Corbyn warned the attack "risks escalating the war in Syria still further" and added: "The British government should urge restraint on the Trump administration and throw its weight behind peace negotiations and a comprehensive political settlement."

BiglyBadgers · 07/04/2017 12:29

Here is some more from Corbyn if anyone is interested...

Don't look at that old thread, it's FAKE!! Look at this one!!!! Trump con't
MrsT2007 · 07/04/2017 13:53

It's possible that Putin and trump coordinated it. Russian anti missile defences were curiously not working during the strike.

They knew the strike was coming. They're supporting Assad. So why?

cozietoesie · 07/04/2017 13:59

So why? Think more broadly. Sad

Natsku · 07/04/2017 14:03

Continuous war so lots of money can be made by arms dealers?

PausingFlatly · 07/04/2017 14:26

Interesting that those "Trump supporters" are supposedly so upset about him bombing a piece of tarmac in Syria after not being in the least bothered about him attacking Mosul or Yemen.

It's as if they're only against US intervention in places where Russia is a major player...

cozietoesie · 07/04/2017 14:29

I reckon that there are some people who deep down realise that they've been sold a pup and are now looking for an excuse to change. That's all. Wink

lionheart · 07/04/2017 14:32

He needs to show that he is not in Putin's pocket and this will be his evidence. But it is flimsy in the extreme when Russia and Syria knew it was coming.

A deadly smokescreen.

Stockholm truck crash: 'Three dead and shots fired' as lorry crashes into pedestrians
www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/04/07/truck-crashes-crowd-people-stockholm/

Natsku · 07/04/2017 14:50

My friend was flying to Stockholm today, shit.

Deejoda · 07/04/2017 15:00

**Expressed support for US strikes on Assad regime:

  • UK
  • France
  • Germany
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Japan
  • Israel
  • Turkey
  • The Netherlands

Australia as well.**

So these countries will be taking in more Syrian refugees then (Turkey excepted as it is doing more than it's fair share). Will await changes in foreign policies across the worldHmm
