To not get the white car craze?

Everyone I know who has purchased a new car in recent years has chosen white, every other car on the road seems to be white!
Fashions come & go and each to their own I know but when you buy a new car you are shown a chart full of of amazing beautiful colours, why would anyone choose boring old white? They remind me of works vehicles/vans/salesmen cars!
And sorry but nothing (imo) looks as WAG-like as a white BMW/Mercedes/Range Rover!!

I have no idea why but whenever i see a white bmw or audi I think "smug". There are a lot more of them recently I think.

Have no opinions on other types of white cars apart from that they must be a bitch to keep clean.

Fluffy if that was aimed at me then no, no Essex here.

Rural Hertfordshire thank you Smile

spidey66 · 31/03/2017 14:16

We've got a white one, because it was the default colour and we needed to pay extra to have it different. Maybe it's not just Fiats that do this?

PinxTheTinxMinx · 31/03/2017 14:16

Lots of white cars round here normally huge 4x4s driven by tiny ladies with huge sunglasses. But then I live near the 'golden triangle' in North/West Yorkshire Wink

jobrum · 31/03/2017 14:18

White Kadjar for us. It was the cheapest colour too!

Marmitelover55 · 31/03/2017 14:20

I've got Caribbean Aqua Grin

KingBob · 31/03/2017 14:20

It's usually the free colour. People don't like to pay the extra £500+ for another colour.

I used to have a white car (because it was the free colour) and I absolutely hated it. It got so dirty and I had to get it cleaned all the time.

I decided I'd never have another white car so sucked it up and paid the extra cash to get a black car and I love it Smile

I know, it's like buying ready salted crisps when there are so many different flavours to choose from Grin

IckleWicklePumperNickle · 31/03/2017 14:26

Red was to be the free colour on our old car. On the new one white was the free colour.

Janey50 · 31/03/2017 14:26

I remember reading somewhere about 3 years ago that white was the most popular choice of colour for cars. So I decided to check out if this was true. What I found was that grey or silver was the most popular colour by far. In my road alone,I counted something like 80 cars. And something like 47 of them were grey or silver! Over 50%,so all the other colours have to account for the remaining 50%. I've done this check randomly since then yes I lead such an exciting life and it still seems to be the most popular colour. Maybe it's a regional thing . What part of the country are you in OP? I'm in outer London. Maybe other areas have different colour preferences? Or,maybe they are buying cars where white is one of,or maybe the only,'free' colour available from the manufacturer? I don't drive so I'm no expert on these things, but from what friends have said when buying new cars, they usually have to pay to have their car a certain colour apart from the standard ones set out by the manufacture.

BarbaraofSeville · 31/03/2017 14:27

Plain white has always been free. pearlescent white probably costs extra. I thought black was the in colour having moved on from silver? But I'm usually behind the times fashion wise so maybe it's white now.

Although if anything, I thought it might be having a roof a different colour as this was what they were pushing last time I was in a car showroom and I've noticed a few on the road.

When I lease from work the lease price is actually less for metallic because they can sell it for more later on. But I still have to pay tax on the extra cost of the metallic paint.

LaurieMarlow · 31/03/2017 14:28

I don't understand the love either. I think they look tacky. And they're often filthy, which doesn't help.

Mine was white because there was an extra to pay for any other colour. I was tempted but too tightfisted!

Spam88 · 31/03/2017 14:55

When my parents got a new car they got white, and it was indeed because they come white as standard so you have to pay for a respray if you want a different colour.

SistersOfPercy · 31/03/2017 14:55

Dh's car is a lease and is black as that was the free colour. He desperately wanted orange (it's the Jeep Renegade) but it was something stupid like £25 a month extra so he didn't bother.

I have a white fiat 500, only because I bought it used and it fitted my needs and budget. I wasn't thrilled with white as every other 500 seems to be white, so I took it to a Graphics guy I know and had some black checkerboard graphics down the side so it looks different. Love it now.

TomaytoTomahto · 31/03/2017 14:56

I have a white Range Rover. Sad

In my case, the only two colours I like are black and white. And since practically everyone around me drives a black car, I decided to go with the latter.

AVY1 · 31/03/2017 15:41

The people I know with white cars chose it because they are really in to scandi minimalism and nearly everything they have is black, white, or grey. I'd have thought silver/grey was still the most popular.

My car is blue - no choice in the matter as it was a hand me down!

shovetheholly · 31/03/2017 15:44

YES!! I don't get it either.

And you only seem to see older silver cars now. It's like white has replaced silver.

AlessandroVasectomi · 31/03/2017 15:51

My wife's last 4 cars have been white, so we're going back to the time before it became fashionable. She chooses it for visibility reasons. 2 cars ago I persuaded her to have champagne and the order was placed. A few weeks later the dealer came back to us and said that colour was being discontinued, so would she like to choose another? Guess what - she chose white.

Her next car is going to be a convertible and I happen to think it looks really good in white, so I'm not so worried about that one.

BeastofCraggyIsland · 31/03/2017 15:53

I don't get the white car love either, would be far too impractical for my dogmobiles. Depends on the car model but I find it a bit tacky. I'm not keen on colourful cars as a whole though, every car I've ever owned has been black apart from one dark grey one and our ancient Defender which is green.

mistermagpie · 31/03/2017 15:55

I wanted white for our last car because the other options were blue or red (in the model we could afford). The thing was murder to keep clean though and looked horrible when it was dirty. Never again. This time we went for black because the other options (that we could afford) were red and blue and I wanted something 'neutral'. Turns out that black shows the dirt even more than white!

Libitina · 31/03/2017 15:56

My car is coming up to 18 months old and is dark (Monsoon) grey, not white. I love the 'pearly' white ones though.

TinfoilHattie · 31/03/2017 16:04

Personally I think you can't go wrong with black and red

You can - I looked at black when I got my last Scenic and it looked like a hearse. Also DH has a black car and I didn't want to be matchy matchy with him - it's a bit sad.

Getting a new car tomorrow and it's sort of a very neutral mid-grey colour.

PitilessYank · 31/03/2017 16:07

I have a white car, because I learned that white, (even in snow), makes cars more visible and less prone to being hit by other motorists.
