To think cheap shampoo is just as good?

Feedback and tips please. Got chatting with some girls at work, much younger. All have fab, straight, silky hair. Mines not so bad I thought, but one of them said you can tell I use a cheap shampoo (not in a nasty way - I said i used cheap shampoo and they said
It shows...)

I eat only chips and then condition my hair in the chip fat.

Teddy1970 · 29/03/2017 20:54

I use Alberto Balsam Detoxifying Grapefruit shampoo (99p), I have greasy hair and it's the only shampoo that really cleans my hair without adding those awful silicones that makes my hair look dreadful..I do have a more expensive conditoner though!

dairymilkmonster · 29/03/2017 20:56

people often ask me which 'hair products' I use - I naturally have thick shiny wavy hair - and I am forced to reply 'whatever is very cheap' . Supermarket own/ alberto balsam are usuals.
I've found for conditionner the value ranges are far too watery but the own brand at about £1 a bottle are fine.

SwearyBerry · 29/03/2017 20:58

I'm in my 40's and have coarse, dry, tinted hair. The supermarket/ boots shampoo that's any use is organic Moroccan argan oil shampoo and conditioner. Otherwise it's Aveda or Phillip Kingsley £££

Butteredparsnip1ps · 29/03/2017 21:02

I seem to remember the Aldi shampoos doing well in a test on the BBC saving money programme. I admit I quite like them, but prefer dove.

I believe a good brush and hairdryer help too. On six out of seven days where I just hang my head upside down and blast, it looks nowhere near as sleek as when I take my time. Not a surprise I guess.

KeepingitReal2 · 29/03/2017 21:07

Sorry to hijack but Can I just ask those that are commenting how many of you have Afro type A hair...

thinking of putting more time into my hair and ditching braids

ChristopherWren · 29/03/2017 21:07

I've used expensive shampoos and cheap shampoos and I haven't found a difference. I have hair that needs washing every day.
Every so often I wash my hair with original Vosene shampoo. It leaves my hair really clean and shiny and people remark on it. And the smell reminds me of childhood!

Mermaidinthesea · 29/03/2017 21:09

I'm using pound shop shampoo and conditioner right now as I'm skint this month due to a big bill and can't tell the difference for my waist length hair.
I've tried all sorts, washing with just water for 6 months, expensive shampoo, cheap shampoo. No difference whatsoever.

bertsdinner · 29/03/2017 21:26

I use Elvive or Dove, I've got long hair and find it works fine.
I have used expensive shampoo and conditioner in the past but don't think it was radically different.
Certain shampoos/conditioners work for me, others dont, and the price doesn't come into it There's another (Elvive?), I tried with clays in it, it left my hair like a big uncontrollable mess. The Elvive one with oils in ( brown bottle), leaves it really smooth and shiny.

limitedperiodonly · 29/03/2017 21:39

Gabilan I got Mane and Tail shampoo and leave-in conditioner once because I heard it was good. It wasn't really. I don't know why I was expecting it to be. Horses have different hair to humans.

I work for magazines and the beauty sales are magnificent and so cheap because companies just send stuff. I have no guidance, but the things are so cheap - a £8 shampoo going for £1 - that it's worth a punt.

I worked for the company that publishes Good Housekeeping before Xmas. They were having a clear out and I bought loads of stuff, including six white Villeroy & Boche bone china dinner plates for £1 each. Those plates were at least £25 each new.

They are beautiful and surprisingly hard wearing.

But back to hair...

hummingbyrd · 29/03/2017 21:51

I love you all. Shopping tomorrow and will update you on purchases! Anyone tried the Palmer coconut ones? My sister has just messaged me and that's what she uses. This has turned into huge debate with everyone o know!

Ps. Most people I've messaged are saying I have good hair! Next week that will be greaaaaaaaat hair I'm sure Hmm

Dove and elvive seem to be favourites...

I must say, I've amazoned (a word?) some of these brands and I'm flabbergasted at some of the ££££. Shock

I use the Palmers olive oil shampoo followed by their coconut oil conditioner.

I originally got them for my mixed race daughter but tried them myself. I have very thick, corse hair and it has never Been in such good condition. They are sulphate free too.

happypoobum · 29/03/2017 22:11

The Elvive Clay one is really good for people like me who have greasy roots and dry ends...............

noeffingidea · 29/03/2017 22:12

Aldis own brand raspberry shampoo and conditioner here. Both cost less than a pound and do the job.
I do like to use a clarifying shampoo occassionally though, so I buy a small bottle of tresemme. My hair feels lovely and light afterwards.

OhSoggyBiscuit · 29/03/2017 22:17

I've used all sorts of stuff. I usually use Head and Shoulders 2 in 1 which leaves my hair feeling nice. Tried Herbal Essences 2 in 1 and seperate shampoo and conditioner- both leave my hair feeling a bit ick and like i haven't rinsed the conditioner out properly. Tresemme, not bad, leaves my hair feeling nice and clean.

I just have very picky hair!

OboeConcerto · 29/03/2017 22:19

Curly & coloured here, I'm using Palmer's Olive Co-wash, no shampoo. Brilliant it is, hair is curly not fluffy for a change & no faff, slap a load on, rub through, leave it on while I shower (5/10 mins), then rinse. Finger comb with a tiny drop more Co-wash as a leave in conditioner, then squeeze excess water out, then product in. Easy.

toffeeboffin · 29/03/2017 23:14

I tried that Elvive clay one once in a sachet and my hair was great, really voluminous.

T2016 · 29/03/2017 23:24

Yes it does make a difference. Cheap shampoos and conditioners will make your hair look shiny and glossy but this is purely because all it does it put a plastic coating on your hair! Which eventually will build up and damage your hair, prevent colour taking etc. Salon professional products will repair your hair internally and overall improve condition thus making it look healthier rather than just making it shiny with silicone! Hope this helps :)

steff13 · 29/03/2017 23:36

I use different brands, but I always avoid silicones and sulfates. My hair is healthy and shiny.

Ollivander84 · 29/03/2017 23:48

What steff said ^^ I have red, dry and curly hair and use a lot of Shea moisture products or l'oreal ever pure

DonaldStott · 29/03/2017 23:59

Nrtft, but tried fake head and shoulders shanpoo and nothing else works as good as that, but I do use an expensive conditioner on the ends of my hair and it is different from cheapo versions.

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 30/03/2017 00:01

I always buy shampoo from TK Maxx. I have greasy hair that tangles very easily. I use this at the moment. I get upto 3 days between washes now. If you're worried about using to much then follow this tip. Wet your hair and rather than using a blob of shampoo use a dab instead. It won't foam up much but you don't need it to. Half rinse your hair then apply a semi blob. I promise you it'll lather up the same as if you'd used a more generous amount. I then apply a leave in spray conditioner on the ends of my hair. I use a wet brush instead of a comb. Wet brushes are amazing. I prefer it over my tangle tamer.

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 30/03/2017 00:03

Wet brush link

CreamCheez · 30/03/2017 00:09

I buy whatever's in the pound shop or baby shampoo. If treating myself, I'll get a nice bottle of the sulphate-free / natural shampoos from TK Maxx.
I rarely use conditioner, but I have a couple of nice ones (Trevor Sorbie / Umberto Giannini / Aussie). My hair can be fuzzy though... I don't blow-dry or colour.
