To think cheap shampoo is just as good?

Feedback and tips please. Got chatting with some girls at work, much younger. All have fab, straight, silky hair. Mines not so bad I thought, but one of them said you can tell I use a cheap shampoo (not in a nasty way - I said i used cheap shampoo and they said
It shows...)

I've gone no poo since Christmas. I use an Asda own pink conditioner only to wash my hair. It's about 70p a bottle. My hair had a never felt so good. My hairdresser said what great condition it's in. Think the cheap ones don't contain the yucky silicone.

TheFlyingFauxPas · 29/03/2017 18:38

Ps. The girls at your work are bitches and should get some class.

TwentyCups · 29/03/2017 18:39

It probably does but I also use the cheapest own brand stuff. Whenever I've used lovely £5+ bottle stuff it feels great but I can't afford to spend that much.

I do a hair mask every so often which helps if you can't afford expensive stuff for everyday. They do nice ones £1 a pack which I use maybe monthly. Or just soak my ends in coconut oil (own brand, warmed through). That works wonders.

Fibbertigibbet · 29/03/2017 18:39

I think it depends on your hair- DF, DH and I have straight, thick hair that can handle basically anything you throw at it, but the rest of my family get awful breakage and limp dull hair if they don't take care of it. What is your hair like, OP?

namechange20050 · 29/03/2017 18:39

It depends. I have quite thick highlighted wavy hair. I can't get away with cheap shampoo. I gave friends with undamaged, naturally straight hair and they can use anything on it.

User1635974 · 29/03/2017 18:41

I agree that a good conditioner is worth the extra. Cheap shampoo is fine IME.

TheFlyingFauxPas · 29/03/2017 18:41

Plus age plays a part in it Sad

Lexilooo · 29/03/2017 18:43

My hair is down to my bum. I use Alberto Balsam £1 shampoo and find it better than most more expensive brands. It is conditioner, and products where you get what you pay for. Though blow drying it properly makes the biggest difference to how hair looks. On the other hand not blow drying it is better for its condition!

hummingbyrd · 29/03/2017 18:44

Fibber, I a natural ginger but I colour it a copper colour to cover the odd grey. It's straight but very thick and if I'm honest, its quite frizzy and dry at the
Moment, even though it's been recently trimmed.

I used to think all shampoos were pretty much the same. But trying aveda shampoo & conditioner have left my hair looking 100 times better. Worse for my bank account though.....

PutThatPomBearBack · 29/03/2017 18:45

I wash my (long) hair every 4 days with dove shampoo which i buy in savers for 95p and i get lots of compliments on it! usually on the day it needs a wash tooConfused

Meekonsandwich · 29/03/2017 18:48

What?!?! That Is a horrible thing to say!!!

The difference between cheap and expensive shampoo is the conditioning qualities of it, more expensive the less drying its going to be. But you can counteract that by using a good conditioner or using oil treatments regularly. Doesn't have to be argon oil or some nut oil no ones ever heard of either, it can be olive oil. Oil is oil, it does the same thing, conditions and adds shine.

I use Alberto balsam shampoo and conditioner for £1 each and oil condition weekly (dry hair).

And I have thick wavy flicky hair that gets complimented.

MrsLouisTomlinson · 29/03/2017 18:49

I used to use any old shampoo and conditioner on offer but following advice from my hairdresser I have went sulfate free and now use this.

www.superdrug.com/L%27Oreal-Professional-EverPure/LOréal-Hair-Expertise-Pure-Dye-Moisture-Shampoo-250ml/p/427253?gclid=Cj0KEQjwtu3GBRDY6ZLY1erL44EBEiQAAKIcvgnuwimHc_Bbfn1l4U9umD0tRzbCdOCANjrXLud2BLQaAgI48P8HAQ&gclsrc=aw.ds

The difference in my hair is amazing. It's on offer right now but even at full price I won't go without it and that's from someone who thought she was destined to have thick, frizzy coarse hair forever. I also use a heat protection cream on it as well.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 29/03/2017 18:49

My hair seems happy with Lidl's own brand. Elvive is about as expensive as I go. Currently on giant bottles of Tresemme.

I don't use heat from straighteners or hair dryers very often so my hair doesn't get particularly stressed and prone to breakage any way. It's usually its natural colour too, although recently I've really pushed the boat out with semi-permanent dye Grin

Etymology23 · 29/03/2017 18:49

I think if you colour your hair it can be more important to use a shampoo that deals with that.

I use Pantene, but it when it's reduced to £2 for 400ml. Not sure if that's "expensive " - yes compared to basics but not compared to hairdresser stuff! Wouldn't buy it at full price I don't think!

hummingbyrd · 29/03/2017 18:51

Meek, do you leave the oil on!?

Such great tips everyone, thanks, bet you can tell what type of shopping in doing tomorrow!!!

I used to use expensive brands but changed to Alberto balsam and it's amazing. My hair looks much better now.

Lagirafe · 29/03/2017 18:56

People say I have nice hair Blush

I use Dove - usually £1.

twocockers · 29/03/2017 18:56

I'm just hunting for a fab shampoo for my mega greasy hair ☹️. Don't care how much it costs just want one that stops me having to wash it every day.

Welshmaenad · 29/03/2017 18:56

I use Tigi professional weightless volumising shampoo and conditioner - I get it from Amazon. My hair is really fine and the best I've found, bottles are huge so masts ages and have a pump top!

Ogx shampoos are good too, I like the coconut water one.

remoaniac · 29/03/2017 18:59

I usually use Liz Earle which is quite expensive.

I don't know if it's cheap versus expensive but I think certain shampoos/conditioners suit certain hair and it can take a bit of time to find the right one.

I don't like shampoos that smell of chemicals, which rules out most of the ones on supermarket shelves.

Aveda shampoos are really nice, I also like L'occitane.

mayoli · 29/03/2017 18:59

dunno really, I used to use Treseme and it ruined my hair. I now use alberto balsam at £1 for shampoo and £1 for conditioner and my hair looks great

ClaryBeanHorshAndMe · 29/03/2017 19:01

No...

Not necessarily because of how it looks when it's freshly washed.

But some shampoos give me dandruff or my hair gets greasy way too soon.

hummingbyrd · 29/03/2017 19:01

Should I be steering clear of
The serum?

OP posts:
Unicorn81 · 29/03/2017 19:02

Redken shampoo and conditioner is amazing and worth the money. I also love molton brown cloudberry and hair repair by loccitane. Even if you used a hair mask once a week you would see an improvement.
