To think cheap shampoo is just as good?

Feedback and tips please. Got chatting with some girls at work, much younger. All have fab, straight, silky hair. Mines not so bad I thought, but one of them said you can tell I use a cheap shampoo (not in a nasty way - I said i used cheap shampoo and they said
It shows...)

Wow! You should look out for the special branded shampoo called 'BITCH'. Just be you. Honestly, I'm sure you look fine. It sounds like a school playground.

e1y1 · 30/03/2017 00:33

I honestly couldn't say if expensive is better than cheap, I suppose it's as with anything; some expensive one's will be great, and some not so, (and visa-versa).

However, there is a MASSIVE difference between brands, some make my hair lovely, soft, glossy and easy to style.

Some leave it bushy/wiry/dry etc.

AbernathysFringe · 30/03/2017 00:39

Little bitches. I think it depends if the shampoo and cond. suit your hair, cheap or expensive, keep trying til you find one that makes it fab.
I read an interview with a model (can't remember who) who had beautiful hair and they asked her what she did. Apparently, every month she'd do one wash (aside from normal shampoo every other day) in Fairy Liquid, she said it stripped out all the built up products and sort of 'reset' her hair. I tried it and it did leave my hair amazing! Mind you, hot oil treatments or Aveda leave in bergamot oil (can't remember name) also great.

Keepthebloodynoisedown · 30/03/2017 01:00

I quite like ogx argon oil, and aussie, which are both quite cheap.
I also do a gross but amazing hair mask of melted coconut oil and egg yolk every couple of weeks.

SparkleSunshine201 · 30/03/2017 01:03

No it's not just the conditioner that matters. I ran out of my expensive shampoo and used a cheaper one, my hair still looked nice but was much drier and I definitely noticed the difference straight away.

ShoutOutToMyEx · 30/03/2017 01:06

I used to use Morrocanoil shampoo and conditioner and now I use Herbal Essences. Honestly, not much in it.

You should tell the girls at your work that they might be able to buy expensive shampoo, but they can't buy class. How horrible.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 30/03/2017 01:16

I think it's down to what you hair is like. I like Aussie shampoo or Timotei and Flex and if I feel there is a build up of serum or just feels greasy I have a bottle of head & shoulders (had same bottle for about three years)

Conditioner Aussie or the one I get with hair dye

I have good hair but it is frizzy and wavy tends to look a bit dry. My hair is feels really soft if I let it dry naturally with no products in

The worse shampoo I have used is Naked it stripped my hair i had to put loads of conditioner on to be able to get a comb through

RiverdaleJughead · 30/03/2017 01:27

Some people have excellent natural hair and sobit doesn't matter what they use. I notice a massive difference in my hair from cheap to expensive - many women with beautiful hair who use cheap s/c could probably have L'Oréal hair with expensive.

hellokittymania · 30/03/2017 01:41

Are use specialty shampoos due to having very fine baby hair that tends to fall out and have other issues. I was using the three in one Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo But then I heard there was a recall due to it having bad things in it? So I stopped using it. I stayed at A hotel recently though and their shampoo was great on my hair.

MotherofA · 30/03/2017 01:53

My sister is a hair dresser and she goes bonkers about cheap shampoo as they contain lots of plastics and chemicals etc . Apparently Aussie is about the best "cheap" brand , I use that or buy the big TIGI bottles but in a dream world would love to use the Moroccan Oil shampoo and conditioner Grin

FireCrotch · 30/03/2017 02:05

I'm a hairdresser. In my opinion Tresemme is the closest to a salon shampoo for all round washing. (The one with the blue liquid in) Aussie is the best for deep conditioning on dry hair (it tends to soften even when used alone) Overall though I find TK Maxx unbeatable for posh salon type shampoo. Can't get cheaper even in the wholesalers. I always snap up RedKen duo sets when I see them and decant them into little bottles for my mobile regulars as a little treat. In November they had a whole end clearance shelf where the lids had come loose, fallen off or been squashed. I bought the lot for £20.

StrangeLookingParasite · 30/03/2017 07:05

I have fine straight hair, and for me the biggest difference in what products to use is what the water is like where you are. The water here is as hard as a rock, full of calcaire (calcification?) so I have to use much richer products than I did in a soft water area.
I use hideously expensive, and increasingly difficult to find, Goldwell Kerasilk. It's the only thing so far that stops me having dog hair (like a terrier).
I've tried Kerastase, Redken, a number of cheap ones, and the Goldwell is the only one that really works. Costs an utter fucking fortune, though - about £90, though that has lasted more than year for three people, so I suppose not that expensive.

StrangeLookingParasite · 30/03/2017 07:09

Well, that is sad. I said all that, and it looks like thay have totally changed the Kerasilk range. Poop.

SheSaidHeSaid · 30/03/2017 07:17

I've definitely noticed a different email when I've used cheap shampoo, it leaves a plastic type coating on my hair and makes it feel and look a bit lank.

Kennington · 30/03/2017 07:17

There isn't too much to debate: look at the ingredients list. They are are pretty much the same. Except for the no sulphates ones.
None of the ingredients are expensive and this salon only brand nonsense is just that. A marketing tool.

OnceMoreIntoTheBleach · 30/03/2017 07:24

I was using Alberto balsam for ages, believing as you say, that cheaper doesn't mean worse. I don't like shampoos that have loads of extras in them, the leave my hair lank, so the AB one I used was silicone-free etc. But my scalp was getting really dry.

So I swapped to herbal essences daily detox shampoo and also the conditioner and honestly my hair feels lovely! I can't stop touching it!

So went from cheapest to slightly more expensive (£3 per bottle) and it made a difference.

MackerelOfFact · 30/03/2017 07:49

I use cheap to mid-range brands (but rarely spend more than £2 a bottle). I alternate brands every day as my hair looks really drab if I use the same one for ages. I use the smallest amount of shampoo I can get away with, but I shampoo it twice and then use lots and lots of conditioner, and try to leave it in for about 5 minutes. Then after rinsing I give it a blast with cold water at the end.

I was using the OGX range for a while because it smelt lovely and the bottles look nice in the bathroom, but it made my hair feel really heavy and almost sticky after a couple of weeks.

I agree with the Dove recommendations, I also quite like VO5.

Pettywoman · 30/03/2017 07:54

I use Aldi shampoo and conditioner and its about 40p a bottle. Does the job fine and I honestly can't tell the difference if I use more expensive brands.

ChippyDucks · 30/03/2017 08:00

My shampoo and conditioner varies massively from Boots own brand coconut at 79p a bottle to L'Occitane verbena at £17 a bottle, and everything inbetween. I love the more expensive one and if I could afford it I would use it every day. I usually have a few different brands on the go at one time so I can use what kind my hair needs at that time.

MsJuniper · 30/03/2017 08:20

I had a hankering for the apple smelling shampoo that lots of hairdressers use. Only apple shampoo I could find was Alberto Balsam but the smell was awful and the condition of my hair was too.

I usually use Tresemme or Elvive but want to try some of the super-posh brands like Redken or PK Elasticiser to see if there's a difference. I have very thick but fine hair which is prone to frizz.

The one thing that gets me compliments on my hair is the babyliss big hair. If I do it properly then I almost always get asked if I've just been to the hairdresser.

ps kevinbacon that's an amazing story - glad you are well.

Wando1986 · 30/03/2017 08:25

You'd be better skipping the shampoo and just using the conditioners. They work by closing the cuticles and take away just as much dirt and grease as the shampoo alone. I just use conditioner, leave it in for a few minutes and rinse as normal. Shampoo is for when I have TONS of muck in my hair from decorating or gardening, fixing the car etc.

SeriousCreativeBlock · 30/03/2017 08:30

I use Aussie shampoo and conditioner (so not cheap but not wildly expensive either) but the only reason I think my hair is shiny and healthy is that I don't use any heat on it (straighteners/hairdryers) and I won't even towel dry my hair, I just leave it to dry naturally. That being said, I'd never go for anything too cheap or 2in1 or whatever.

HelenaGWells · 30/03/2017 08:35

I buy whatever is branded but on offer. I find
If I use 99p stuff my hair looks great at first but quickly looks greasy and dull and feels awful.

I bought a tangle tamer brush. Best investment ever. Bought for DD but it's mine now.

SuperPug · 30/03/2017 08:37

I used to work for a very well known beauty brand (quite a few years ago) and their cheaper products contained something like plastic. I tried some of them out and my hair was left as one solid, gunky mess Blush
Apart from your workmates sounding awful, I think that it does make a difference. Kerastase is pretty good and their mousse is excelllent, blow dry lotion not so much.

SoulAccount · 30/03/2017 08:38

T2016 with your knowledge, what specific shampoos / conditioners would you (or others with professional knowledge) put on a recommended list?

For straight, brown, dyed hair?

Thank you! I get the principle but have no idea what that looks like on the shelf!
