To think cheap shampoo is just as good?

Feedback and tips please. Got chatting with some girls at work, much younger. All have fab, straight, silky hair. Mines not so bad I thought, but one of them said you can tell I use a cheap shampoo (not in a nasty way - I said i used cheap shampoo and they said
It shows...)

Does anyone use Aussie shampoo? I used to use that all the time, is
It still about?

What's a babyliss big hair?

I have fine but thick hair and it gets very flyaway. I do find that a more expensive shampoo gives a better finish and you don't need so much of it. I like L'Oreal Densifique in the white bottle.

DagenhamRoundhouse · 29/03/2017 20:02

*hummingbyrd" Aussie products have such a pungent smell I can tell if some near me has used them! It's a horrible smell to my nose.

Esspee · 29/03/2017 20:04

Dandruff shampoo strips colour. Learned this when I phoned to complain that the hair colour (not my usual one) I had used left my hair a very dark blonde and I needed to lighten it. Cheapest anti dandruff shampoo worked wonders in lightening it but left my hair in appalling condition.
The hair colour I normally use (Preference - L'Oreal) has the most amazing conditioner with it. Huge tube, enough for weeks and sooooo great at leaving my hair silky and glowing.

IfNotNowThenWhenever · 29/03/2017 20:10

I sometimes use the Aussie 3 minute miracle anti frizz conditioner.
It's very good. Weirdly the 3 minute moisturising one is awful and turns my hair to straw.
Some expensive shampoos etc are worth it. I swear by Bumble and Bumble.

limitedperiodonly · 29/03/2017 20:10

Have you tried Sally?

The service from the staff can be a bit hit and miss but the customers are really knowledgeable and lots of them are hairdressers. I'm clueless about hair and beauty and have loads of help from customers.

I think it is age-related. In my 20s people would regularly comment on my hair and I would boast about using cheap shampoo and conditioner.

Not any more. It goes frizzy really easily. Kerastase or Redken works best. Hair masks are a good idea.

I'm a magpie and a bargain hunter so I use all kinds of stuff. I'm currently using a Joico volumising foam which works well and smells nice too. I kept buying L'Oreal Elvive or VO5 mousse which was terrible. It's because I'm a cheapskate. The Elvive mousse smells particularly unpleasant but I couldn't resist it because it was so cheap.

I'm a very keen home hair dyer and love mixing up shades. It's always better to get your hair dyed at a salon but it's more expensive. I used to get good results by mixing 2 or 3 brown/red shades of L'Oreal Preference but they've discontinued my favourite shade and the replacement is too golden and while it doesn't look terrible, it's not as good. That brand does leave your hair shiny though.

A trip to Sally's hair dye aisles beckons...

Was just coming on to mention Aussie products OP.....to cut a v long story short, a year ago I was v v v poorly ( actually came out of my coma a year ago today 😀) and the trauma made my hair almost all fall out over the following months....so when I felt a lot better I went for a short peroxide blonde crop....I use John frieda shampoo especially for blondes but use Aussie 3 minute miracle conditioner as even though my hair is short it's as dry as a badgers arse now....and I LOVE the Aussie range ( agree with PP that it has its own aroma!!) it's the only thing that really softens it...also love Toni and Guy shampoo and conditioner.....but for cheap imho , absolutely cannot beat Dove....they have a new product out , it's got " oil" in the title and I paid £3 for both shampoo and conditioner....hth.....( a very middle aged) Roxette signing off now X oh and ignore the ignorant little girls ....

limitedperiodonly · 29/03/2017 20:14

x-post Esspee. L'Oreal Preference is a good dye, isn't it? And the conditioner is lovely. It does make your hair shiny. I hate the root touch up stuff they've replaced the little sachet of oily serum with though. The dye is really good but that touch up is terrible.

Gabilan · 29/03/2017 20:16

Personally I prefer to use shampoo, conditioner and styling product from the same range as they're designed to work together. Given comments on this thread though OP, you could maybe try a cheaper shampoo, then a conditioner and styling product that match.

Sebastian: very good but very expensive and not always easy to get hold of

Paul Mitchell: good and not too expensive

Bumble & Bumble: brilliant but expensive. They have a curl range that allows for different thicknesses of hair that I really like

TiGi Honey and Oatmeal: not as good as B&B but better value for money

Redken: haven't used it for years. Was always good though

Fudge: great, not always available

KMS: bleurgh. Never got on with it. Bottles are stashed somewhere as my emergency supply when the rest runs out

Phytospecific: over priced and over rated (IMO)

Label M: my current favourite

Look for things with silk in as well, they can be good. If there's a TKMaxx near you it may be worth rooting around in their supplies. Otherwise I tend to order over the internet, but then I live in the sticks, not near hairdressers that stock decent stuff.

toffeeboffin · 29/03/2017 20:17

Baby shampoo gets me the most compliments.

And redken cleansing creme.

itsacatastrophe · 29/03/2017 20:19

I've gone sulphate and silicone free and my hair has never looked so good.
Really made a difference.

Arealhumanbeing · 29/03/2017 20:19

Your colleagues are a bit rude. Were you upset, OP?

For me the thing with cheap shampoo is that it nearly always contains sodium laureth sulphates. Turns my natural curls (which can look quite nice) into frizz.

When I use a more expensive one such as kerastase or Pureology it hangs in waves.

Have you seen any of the new co washing creams? They're even better but I'd still shampoo once a week. Conditioner first though. Really work it into your roots then shampoo it out.

Have a google. There's loads of options.

limitedperiodonly · 29/03/2017 20:19

I've avoided Aussie since a shampoo made my head itch so much I clawed great scabs in my scalp. I think that was just me, though my skin isn't particularly sensitive.

Oh, and yes OP. Those girls were bloody rude. I had fantastic hair in my 20s and I didn't do bugger all to it either. I thought that would last...

unlucky83 · 29/03/2017 20:21

I'm sensitive to MIT (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylisothiazolinone) a preservative found in things like shampoos - and (last time I checked) it was in most of them I looked at.
After much faffing - I now wash my hair 2-3 times a week mainly using Ecover washing up liquid but every few washes use a solid shampoo bar (www.funkysoapshop.com/solid-shampoo-bars-c102x2588664). No conditioner.
I like the shampoo bars - although your hair does feel a bit odd at first.
I've tried a few - the one I am using at the moment (Lavender & Rosemary -I think) I don't like as much - it leaves a residue that is hard to get rid of. I use it if my hair seems a bit dry - it seems to act like a conditioner. And the bars last ages (I would say 4-6 months).
I don't blow dry/use products on mine and it is in pretty good condition....(DD2 used to like styling it and once said from the back I look 20 Smile ....then I turn round and it is a shock Grin - I'm nearly 50...)
I think the more gunk you put on the more gunk you need

limitedperiodonly · 29/03/2017 20:22

KMS: bleurgh

I thought that too Gabilan. But I couldn't bear to pour it down the drain so I ended up hand washing my delicate underwear and tights in it.

AwfulSomething · 29/03/2017 20:24

Er, did anyone post about the importance of a good diet as opposed to a bunch of products with absolutely no clinical evidence to support the claims....

limitedperiodonly · 29/03/2017 20:26

No, AwfulSomething, but I bet you're dying to

toffeeboffin · 29/03/2017 20:27

Meh, awful. We like shampoo on this fred, we do.

Alberto Balsam Tea Tree Tingle is nice too.

shortsaint · 29/03/2017 20:28

I have similar hair and have tried loads. Just get a mid range one - I like Aussie \ Tresemme - always on offer in Superdrug and big bottles. I only wash twice a week so they last ages. Use loads of conditioner, sometimes one of those 'leave it in for 3 mins' then rinse and ALWAYS rinse with cold water - as cold as you can stand. I promise that will get shine back!

toffeeboffin · 29/03/2017 20:29

Not sure if there is Bulk Barn yet in the UK?

If so, they do a shampoo bar for about a quid which is really, really good. Like the Lush ones.

AwfulSomething · 29/03/2017 20:29

No limited, you goady MNs do make laugh though, have a great evening xxx hun

Gabilan · 29/03/2017 20:32

Limited my horse is now used to having a range of odd shampoos used on him. I patch test first, obviously.

Awful I have a good diet. I'm fit, healthy, a good weight. However, I have very thick, curly hair. This makes it mechanically difficult for oils to travel from root to tip and so my hair is dry.

Most of the time I penny pinch. I weigh up evidence, I've very careful and rational. And you know what? I like buying expensive hair products. It's my thing.

Arealhumanbeing · 29/03/2017 20:39

Awfulsomething Don't be so mardy. We're all just talking about our hair Smile

Sometimes it's about the results you see rather than clinical evidence.

AnoiseAnnoysanOyster · 29/03/2017 20:43

I use Garnier Ultimate Blends and really like it.
