To think cheap shampoo is just as good?

Feedback and tips please. Got chatting with some girls at work, much younger. All have fab, straight, silky hair. Mines not so bad I thought, but one of them said you can tell I use a cheap shampoo (not in a nasty way - I said i used cheap shampoo and they said
It shows...)

It's one of my little luxuries on payday my 3 for £10 shampoos! I get usually John Frieda or Toni & Guy. Tried some cheaper shampoos last year and hated them, my hair was awful after.

I use conditioner every time and also have an official Tangle Teaser brush too - it works wonders. Brush my hair before a shower and straight after too. Only use Got2Be hairsprays too. I'm very fussy!!

Palomb · 29/03/2017 19:06

My hairs lovely and silky and I use Cien tee tree shampoo and conditioner that cost about 45p a bottle.

Different shampoo suits different hair, it's got
nothing to do with how much it costs. British people love to have the most expensive things and brag about it!

I'd rather spend my money on wine Grin

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 29/03/2017 19:07

I watched a programme that looked at the ingredients in various shampoos and rated cheaper and high end brands. Asda apple shampoo had the same ingredients as washing up liquid Shock

hummingbyrd · 29/03/2017 19:08

My friend just recommended I try coconut oil over night. I can't believe I have neglected my hair for so long 😣

The problem is that you end up spending a lot to find the right cheap shampoo. I tried a few, my hair felt brittle and dull (one was boots own range, tried Aldi too). My hair went back to full and shiny with a more expensive one. I can't be bothered to try them all, I stick with the more expensive range now.

Dontgoogle1 · 29/03/2017 19:09

I used Herbal Essences before and my hair was so greasy after. I thought maybe I just didn't rinse it properly so I gave it another go and really made sure I rinsed it all out, but no, still so greasy.

I use cheap own brand but I am feeling like I need to change. I might try the L'Oréal one linked up thread. I don't really know what others to try.

I can't tell what shampoo people use though, so they were just being bitches IMO.

SaucyJack · 29/03/2017 19:11

I do find some of the dirt cheap ones tend to be a false economy because they're so watery you have to use twice as much.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 29/03/2017 19:11

I use cheapo Alberto balsam. My hair looks just the same as when I used expensive stuff

honeyroar · 29/03/2017 19:12

I've recently switched to more ethical, cruelty free products. I ended up trying the Coop's Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner. It's quite possibly the best conditioner I've ever used, as good as my hairdresser's products, and it only costs around £1!

Gabilan · 29/03/2017 19:12

I a natural ginger but I colour it a copper colour to cover the odd grey. It's straight but very thick and if I'm honest, its quite frizzy and dry

I have thick, curly ginger hair. I've used various products over the years. At the moment I'm using Label M honey and oatmeal range and their curl cream. If you're interested, I can bore for Britain on how to manage thick, curly hair. If you're happy with it as it is, I'll leave you alone Smile

They were mean to say anything by the way.

BBCNewsRave · 29/03/2017 19:12

I always used to receive compliments about my hair (late teens through 20s) despite using cheap shampoos. Always had a long mane of slightly curly but silky hair, thinning out a bit now so maybe compliments were age related not shampoo related! I use an own-brand one that smells delicious and Alberto Balsam conditioner.

I heard that the less harsh to your hair the better, so used baby shampoo for a while though...

AYankinSpanx · 29/03/2017 19:12

My hair is loads better since ditching the serum. I used high end ones, but ultimately, over time, the stuff was pretty bad for the condition of my hair.

I comb through avocado oil before washing my hair, and I wash with sulphate-free conditioner instead of shampoo every second hair wash.

It's true that all shampoos with technically 'clean' your hair, but cheaper ones might lack the shine boosting/smoothing/whatever stuff that expensive ones have.

I prefer to use DD2's very mild, organic baby shampoo at the moment!

Gablian, please please tell! Any tips welcomed!

I use either bedhead colour goddess which smells amazing or frizz ease as I have super fine hair. Anything else makes my hair flat and greasy after a day. Pantene ruins my hair as does elvive. I also use a Paul Mitchell hair repair instead of conditioner once a week or so, you really notice the difference.

AYankinSpanx · 29/03/2017 19:15

My friend just recommended I try coconut oil over night. I can't believe I have neglected my hair for so long

Don't be down on yourself OP. It's only hair after all.

I"ve tried coconut oil and thought it was great until I tried avocado oil - loads better. Smile

peachgreen · 29/03/2017 19:17

Sulphate free is the way to go but you need to give it time as at first your hair feels duller (because it's not being coated). Tbh I think the most important things are to give your scalp a good massage when you shampoo, rinse thoroughly and to switch brands every time you buy a new bottle. Hairdressers seem to work magic because they wash hair so much more thoroughly than your average person washes their own. Plus they double shampoo and leave the conditioner on while they massage.

happypoobum · 29/03/2017 19:19

I agree that some products/brands work on some people and not others.

Pantene makes my hair look like shit.

I find Elvive is really good as a cheaper option for my hair. If I have a bit of extra cash I will treat myself to Tigi but to be honest it just smells nicer, it doesn't make a huge difference to my hair.

hummingbyrd · 29/03/2017 19:20

Do you all mix brands? I'm a bit anal about the shampoo and conditioner matching, but seems loads of you swap about. This is a bloody revelation. I've just got a glass of wine and a note pad.

I use schawzkopf. A 1.5l bottle (about 16quid online) lasts me almost a year. You only need a 20p piece sized blob.

I've been using salon shampoo for years and until my recent -bleaching- pre-lightening endeavours my hair has always been in amazing condition. Moral trying to go silver grey when you are a brunette is sometimes just not meant to be!

opinionatedfreak · 29/03/2017 19:22

My hair dresser is a product junkie - she has me using the Schwarzkopf shampoo and redken conditioner.

So no, I don't think you need to stay brand loyal.

ClaryBeanHorshAndMe · 29/03/2017 19:22

humming No, they don't match in my case (not at all, tbh...)

ClaryBeanHorshAndMe · 29/03/2017 19:23

good dry shampoo is imo a lifesaver, btw...

Newtssuitcase · 29/03/2017 19:23

I think you have to try out a range until you find something that suits you and your hair.

I have very long thick hair and get compliments on it on probably a weekly basis. It is very swishy and shiny.

I use head and shoulders shampoo because DH uses it and I can't be bothered to buy a different one. I use a whole range of conditioners. currently a cheap argan oil one. The thing I find makes the most difference is a drop (teeny tiny one) of moroccan oil before drying. Ive tried others because I know moroccan oil has been criticised but it is better than the various other oils Ive tried. Ive probably tried 6-8 different ones. Some very expensive.

I also swear by hedrin once every few months to remove product build up. It gives me super swishy hair to the extent that I can almost forgive DS1 for the time he gave me nits and led me to discover this wonderful beauty secret. The day after a hedrin application I can literally hear my hair swishing as I walk!

SemiNormal · 29/03/2017 19:26

My friend just recommended I try coconut oil over night. - I do this, make sure you wash your hair at least twice the following morning or it can still look slightly oily. I've tried expensive and cheap, both pretty much the same to me but the coconut oil does make a difference. I also use Keratase Elixer sometimes, also amazing but not as cheap as coconut oil.
