Feedback and tips please. Got chatting with some girls at work, much younger. All have fab, straight, silky hair. Mines not so bad I thought, but one of them said you can tell I use a cheap shampoo (not in a nasty way - I said i used cheap shampoo and they said
It shows...)

Does the OP who posted about Kerastase know that it has exactly the same ingredients as Elvive? Both made by the same company but the latter much cheaper.

MusicToMyEars800 · 31/03/2017 23:12

purple that wouldn't surprise me I've used the keratase hair oil and the loreal extraordinary oil and I didn't see any differences between the 2 of them other than smell, the loreal hair oil when used with the same shampoo and conditioner does amazing things to my fine, limp over frizzed hair

Katie0705 · 01/04/2017 01:42

hummingbyrd I use Head and Shoulders when I want to strip my hair of hair dye...its fantastic for that. Can be a bit harsh otherwise, but I suppose it just depend on hair type and the condition its in.

beautygal29 · 01/04/2017 07:43

I'm a hairdresser so I avoid everything in boots/Superdrug. The problem which cheap shampoos and conditioners is the have lots of silicones in which make the hair look shiny but hides the damage it's doing and it strips coloured hair quicker too. I'm trying to go sulfate free but find it makes them less lathery which I like. My faves are Wella, TIGI and Joico.

skerrywind · 01/04/2017 08:05

Wella ingredients : Water, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glycol Distearate, Dimethicone,

TIGI ingredients : Aqua (Water/Eau), Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Parfum (Fragrance), Glycol Distearate, Dimethiconol,

beautygal29 I am sure "as a hairdresser" you know that dimethicone and dimethiconol are both silicone.
Bothe contained within Wella and YIGI shampoos.

skerrywind · 01/04/2017 08:05

TIGI

skerrywind · 01/04/2017 08:06

So in fact you just made that bit up for us.

beautygal29 · 01/04/2017 08:46

Apologies in wella I use elements which is sulfate free and yes the others do have silicone in but it's about the levels of it that's the problem in a pro product versus a high street one. As for the cattiness skerrywind claws away please it's about a shampoo ffs!

Kennington · 01/04/2017 08:55

The amounts of an ingredient are in order of the ingredients listed. After ingredient no7 the amounts are minuscule
A cosmetic formation chemist would tell you there is no difference in salon and high st products.
The only difference is perfume and if they contain sls or not.
I like ogx and some are sls free and contain more conditioners so are like a shampoo and condtioner in one.
It is the same with many things and we are paying for marketing the product.

BabyPigeon83 · 01/04/2017 08:56

Agree with skerrywind. 😁
Also the sodium lauryl sulphate from wella (and other shampoos) can be too drying with frequent use. Better use sodium laureth sulphate.
It's amazing what you get from turning around the bottle and checking the ingredients : TRUTH.

expatinscotland · 01/04/2017 09:03

I bought Mane & Tail for DD. Started using it myself and it's terrific!

Bluebell9 · 01/04/2017 09:17

I use Philip Kingsley shampoo and conditioner. It is about £20 a bottle but I've noticed such a difference. My hair is much better condition, feels better and doesn't break as much, you only need a tiny amount of the expensive shampoo compared to cheaper ones.

Hulababy · 01/04/2017 09:55

Im on my 40 and I have a lot of glossy healthy hair. Hairdressers regularly comment in my hair.
I've never used expensive shampoo and conditioner.

However I think key for me is that I don't use harsh styling products either. I use a heat protector in my hair before drying it each morning and use straighteners as than once a week. I only have my hair highlighted about 3 times a year, and no bleach etc.

So I think my hair stays healthy glossy and shiny more from not being overstyled with harsh products.

VeganCow · 01/04/2017 11:26

OGX is NOT cruelty free. It is owned by Johnson & Johnson and is also sold in China which in itself means it is animal tested.

Natstar98 · 01/04/2017 13:18

My 15 year old daughter has waist length thick wavy hair. We've spent years trying to find one just right for her hair, spent a small fortune on very expensive products and hair masks. Recently I thought I'd try the asda own brand. I use the handsoap and thought it was worth a try. Cost about 75p and it's made the whole families hair really shiny and healthy. My daughter is a brand snob and even she refuses to go back to the old stuff.

CarrieWatermelon · 01/04/2017 13:22

I've been talked in to trying out expensive shampoos and conditioners by hairdressers several times over the years and I honestly never notice any difference.

To be honest, I think harsh colours and heat appliances are the enemy for most of us, not shampoo.

Herbal Essences all the way Grin.

Ahmezia · 01/04/2017 13:39

Actually I think the trick is the regularly change which shampoo you use to get the best results.

I find whichever shampoo I use initially it does a fantastic job which seems to wear off after a time iyswim? I am always swapping and changing to get the best results.

And yes as other people say conditioner (even cheap stuff) can make all the difference.

BaconAndAvocado · 01/04/2017 14:17

Rubbish. I've used Aldi shower gel in the past and still had lustrous, shiny locks.

unlucky83 · 01/04/2017 15:11

Hmm - Question time this week made me think about this thread - Lisa Nandy was on there - along with Ruth Davidson and Kate Andrews. They all had dark hair. (The blokes were either bald or grey/greying...before anyone thinks I am being sexist not mentioning them)
Lisa Nandy's hair was really really shiny and swishy - in fact (probably due to this thread!) I found it rather distracting Smile.... comparing it to the other two's hair my first thought was it the most healthy etc - then I thought actually it looks quite fake ...plasticky - a bit like a doll's hair. And the more I looked at it the more I thought that...
No idea about the hair products they use - whether they use expensive ones or not - but I suspect Lisa's hair care has a lot of silicone or some other shine enhancer in it.
I wonder if our idea of what healthy hair looks like has been by influenced by things like increased silicone use... natural healthy hair doesn't look like that...
OP I really wouldn't worry too much what your young colleagues think... I am guessing they also think those 'defined' - drawn on eyebrows - are 'fleek'....(whereas they remind me of over made up old ladies in my youth who had over plucked...).

MikeUniformMike · 01/04/2017 15:33

I loved the green herbal Cien shampoo, but not seen it recently. Can anyone recommend an alternative please?

LisaC7 · 01/04/2017 15:57

My hair improved after switching to Tresemme 'silicone free' shampoo / conditioner.

MikeUniformMike · 01/04/2017 16:01

Oh dear, yes, some young women today have very strange eyebrows that look like they've got eyeshadow in and lots of brown gunk on their faces but wear jeans with holes in and plimsolls. They also have very long straight hair.

I have different shampoos in the bathroom and one of them makes my scalp itchy but I can't remember which one.

kshaw · 01/04/2017 16:29

I used to work in a lab where I was making sure supermarket home brands match brands...always passed blind tests. They're the same. The factory used to take on contract work too making the big brands - they are the same.
If the packaging of home brands reminds you of a brand it's been modelled on it - it's the same

Luluandizzy · 01/04/2017 19:43

I don't understand how those girls comments can be anything other then nasty. Ignore it Hun. It's absolutely bull. My own hairdresser (and very close friend) has confirmed it's bull. She has beautiful straight, glossy hair and uses lo'real Elvive. She has also said my hair is in great condition and I use herbal essences xxx

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 01/04/2017 19:55

I have long curly hair, I use Aussie shampoo & conditioner with either Paul mitchell serum or twisted sista curl activator then pantenne mousse. Hairdresser tells me regularly that I have the best condition hair she's seen, mainly because I don't use either straightners or a hairdryer.
I wouldn't use cheap shampoo.
