To think leggings are naff

Too much exposure, too ugly and just too naff basically.

OP posts:
silentsigh · 27/03/2017 19:04

I love leggings as an alternative to tights because they're so much more comfy and easier to put on. I practically live in them. At home I do wear just a top with leggings, but out would always have something longer than mid thigh. Don't know why you would see them as ugly or naff, but each to their own!

Theweasleytwins · 27/03/2017 19:05

I get mine from Select, they aren't shiny or see through, plus I always wear dresses that go to my knees

TheOnlyColditz · 27/03/2017 19:05

They are but they are so so comfy.I love them.

It's like an abusive relationship. They don't suport me, they make me look bad in front of my friends, they expose all my flaws, but I love them.

purplecoathanger · 27/03/2017 19:06

It depends how you wear them. So YABU.

TheOnlyColditz · 27/03/2017 19:06

ANd Yes, Select leggings are bizarrely good quality for something so cheap

3littlebadgers · 27/03/2017 19:06

I wear them as tights too, under dresses for work. I work with small children and find them more flexible and decent than tights.

So yabu

Bluntness100 · 27/03/2017 19:07

I wesr leggings round the house in winter, with long jumpers. They are cheap crap ones but hugely comfy. Got a pair on now.

I'm not a fan of the leggings dress combo though and I seldom wear leggings out, unless nipping to the local corner shop and even then I've a long jumper and jacket over the top.

My nineteen year old daughter wears leggings out with long jumpers, but they are always the thick more expensive type. The transparency test is the first thing she does.

What does look "naff" is leggings that are see through and someone's arse on display.,

I saw a teenage girl, about 15 years old, and with her parents, recently in w pair of woollen ones, I genuinely thought she was out in just her tights for a moment. Could clearly see her underwear. And I found myself glancing at her parents and being a bit judgy for a moment if I'm honest.

ZefStar · 27/03/2017 19:08

Using the word 'naff' is much more naff.

i don't like pyjamas being worn outside so leggings are the next best thing

littlefrog3 · 27/03/2017 19:08

I love my leggings. I don't think they suit a more ample frame, but if they are OK to good quality, they look fine on a slim to slightly plump figure... I wear them with wellies, (with a long-ish t-shirt,) and a fleece to go for walks. Would only wear them for casual wear though.

I think anyone who is less than 3 stone overweight pulls them off just fine. (Black only though!) But bigger bodies don't suit them!

paxillin · 27/03/2017 19:10

I wear them as pyjama bottoms or for sport. Other than that I'd feel like I forgot my skirt.

BackforGood · 27/03/2017 19:10

If you are asking if leggings worn as trousers are usually a big mistake, then YANBU.
If you are saying people shouldn't wear leggings under a long top / tunic / dress then YABU.

ElspethFlashman · 27/03/2017 19:11

I used to be you, OP....

Back in the days when my stomach was as flat as a wall. I wouldn't be caught dead in leggings! Ugh!

But then babies destroyed my midsection and I quickly realised only tunics could save me. And leggings under tunics at least show that your legs are still ok.

Today I wore a mini dress with leggings underneath. Occasionally I wonder if I've become what I used to despise......but then I look down at my well concealed wobbly bits and my shapely black clad calves and I stop giving a fuck.

gunsandbanjos · 27/03/2017 19:11

Leggings are grim, was walking behind a lady the other day with them on and I could actually see her arse. Yeuch.

Birdsgottaf1y · 27/03/2017 19:11

I'm living in them. I've put on loads of weight, through ill health, that will take me months to drop, once I'm mobile again. I can't get jeans/jeggings to fit me.

I think they look better than ill fitting skinny jeans, on some people.

I wear long tops over them. I'm restricted with what I can wear on my feet, so leggings fit in with leggings.

itfcbabe · 27/03/2017 19:13

I live in legging with top or dress.

claraschu · 27/03/2017 19:14

Bluntness Don't be judgy of parents of 15 year old girls please please please (sob). My daughter's aim is to wear things that look terrible on her, are borderline indecent, and MOST of all make me cringe and whimper.

I am a person who never likes any tight clothes, loves natural fibres, doesn't wear makeup, and thinks high heels are instruments of torture. I made a valiant effort to be accepting and non-judgemental, and only ask that she stays mostly decent and reasonably dressed for whatever she is doing. She still comes home with the most appalling things she borrows or buys in charity shops, and absolutely covered in hideous eye makeup. It's really not my fault! and it hurts me more than it hurts you!

pipsqueak25 · 27/03/2017 19:14

tops covering the bum are okay with legging but when everything else is on show...

nympthinyellow · 27/03/2017 19:14

YABU- c section scar. Some days I can manage trousers, most days they make me feel like I'm being cut open with a rusty saw so leggings are the only way to go.

pipsqueak25 · 27/03/2017 19:15

*leggings

ForalltheSaints · 27/03/2017 19:16

YANBU.

As tights or underwear maybe. Worse if they are getting thin and you see through to knickers.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 27/03/2017 19:19

It's okay I'm covering my fat arse bum and other wobbly bits with the long dresses and jumpers. Grin

Can't say I'm that bothered someone thinks they're naff. I got a lovely jacket on the Primark sale for a fiver and a lovely lady stopped me recently to tell me she loved it so I know I'm not too naff Wink

ElspethFlashman · 27/03/2017 19:19

I just want to warn people to stay away from the Primark shapewear ones often recommended here. Yes, they do stay up like they're glued to you, but they feel all wrong, too thin. They're basically footless tights.

VanessaBet · 27/03/2017 19:20

Saggy kneed see-through black ones - no. And I don't like them under dresses, tights look better. However I am a big fan of the ridiculously patterned tight ones done by Black Milk, although I appreciate they'd not be everyone's choice! (I always get compliments on by galaxy ones and Game of Thrones dragon scales pair)

LilQueenie · 27/03/2017 19:21

yabu they are supposed to be accessories like tights not jeans or trousers. Its ever since it became popular to wear them without covering the arse that they got a bad rep. It still looks bad.

Glittermakeseverythingbetter · 27/03/2017 19:23

I wear them pretty much every day, instead of tights.
My tweenager wears them with short tops, as apparently that's what tweenagers do. even though I've told her a thousand times you are not meant to have your bum on show
