To think it's very bad form

DH went to collect the curry tonight. When he got in I asked him how much it was in the end and he told me. I said it sounded cheaper than usual and he said he'd asked for a discount.

I was a bit confused and asked him why he'd asked for a discount. He just said if you don't ask you don't get. So I said that the price is the price, and how I thought it was very poor form to ask for a discount for no reason. They were gracious enough not to make a scene and granted him a 10% discount. They're a great restaurant with beautiful food (no reason whatsoever to need discounts) and we're regular customers. I feel a bit mortified and cross at DH. AIBU or is he?

Business have costs factored in - such as the 4% surcharge for paying by card. So why not ask for a discount for cash? Or picking it up rather than having it delivered?

To get our takeaway delivered we'd pay about £3 because of where we live. That's a separate cost to the food because it costs fuel and time for someone to come and deliver it. That doesn't mean you can get money off the food for picking it up yourself. Hmm

It's bad form, especially to ask when collecting. You had already agreed to the published prices when placing the order

It is bad form, unless the restaurant does offer a discount for collection (the takeaway we use states on the menu 10% discount for collections). Occasionally we are given free poppodums or similar but I would never ask.

I've never known a takeaway to have two pricelists, one for delivery and one for collection. How bizarre! You live and learn. They'd soon go out of business in a city or town if they tried pulling that stunt!

Our local Indian gives us a 10% discount if we collect. Saves them the cost of a driver, good on your husband Grin

The restaurant has kindly offered us money off on a precious occasion, because their card machine was broken, so because of the inconvenience they phoned me in advance and apologised and offered a discount. They are exceptionally gracious. That's why it's bothered me even more...the fact he went in and asked them for a discount today, and they felt obligated to agree to it.

You say you're regular customers. That'll be why they agreed to a discount. I'm not brave enough but good luck to anyone who is. The worst that can happen is that they say they can't.

StillDriving exactly, regardless of whether you pick up or collect, the food costs the same. If they offer then that's fine, but haggling with them is just not on IMO

Well, they had to give a discount if they'd cooked the food - what else could they do with it? But he's cheeky - he should pay the set price.

How would he like it if someone cut down his wage?

I have my own business and hate customers who asked for a discount for absolutely no reason! Our prices are already very reasonable, we're putting our first price increase in 4 years in place next month as we can no longer absorb the mounting costs. I don't relent though, a very firm 'sorry, no' usually does the trick!

My favourite take away has a 15% discount for collecting instead of delivery. Which is nice!

I'd never dream of asking if there wasn't though!!

It seems to be a thing now to ask for a discount. A taxi driver the other day (black cab) took me because the guy in front had tried to negotiate a discount based on the Uber fare!

I had an ex boyfriend who did that, in cafes, currys, argos. He was a student at the time but from fairly well off background. Once we were in a charity shop and he started "haggling" and I had to walk out.

He said they would not sell or discount past an amount that still gave them a profit.

I only manage haggling when buying second hand cars and at markets!

Perhaps make it up to the restaurant in some way with an extra large "keep the change" next time and a glowing review on TripAdviser?
