To wonder why 'thin is in'?

DH and I were discussing this with a group of friends earlier today - why are all models now expected to be so thin?

Normally, nobody finds it attractive (obviously bar a few exceptions). The majority of men prefer at least some moderate feminine curves and the majority of females feel slightly sick looking at a really clinically underweight model. It's extremely damaging for these women who starve themselves to be in that profession and surely we'd all be more persuaded to buy stuff if the person modelling it looked happy and healthy...

I don't mean naturally skinny like some people who struggle to gain weight . I mean really, really, anorexic thin like a supermodel.

Any theories?

I'm guessing it's just to do with how clothes hang on them?

Who are you to say that nobody finds slim women attractive? It's comments like that that are the reason you've got teenage girls wanting breast enlargements and implants in their arses.

Clothes look and hang better and that's what they're for, to show off the clothes

It's because the designers want their clothes showcased on human coat hangers. I read an article recently about a model who said that they are absolutely encouraged to starve themselves into the correct shape and then their images are airbrushed to erase their prominent ribs etc giving the impression that they are naturally thin and healthy.

Many of the models are very young and under a lot of pressure to do as they are told to get work.

Very, very few people in real life look good at 5'10 plus and a size 8.

I must admit I'm more than a little bit sick of the absolute obsession with women's bodies. If its not offensive 'real women have curves' bullshit, it's comments like yours about thin people being unattractive. How about enough? How about people concentrate on keeping their own body healthy and STFU about other peoples.

Bailey101 I never said that slim women are unattractive. I mean the super, super skinny model look.

I read somewhere that fashion designers don't actually want people to wear their clothes. They would prefer them to stay on hangers so they try to get the thinnest people possible to model them.

So it isn't really about attractiveness.

Most people do not look like coat hangers.

It's about how the clothes hang. No pesky lumps or bumps to ruin the line. Also look at their faces. They tend to be child-like and bland. It seems that the days of having very glamourous beauties are long gone. The designers and editors don't want the model to distract from the clothes.

It's an issue with the fashion industry that has been discussed for years, with some countries not allowing the use of models under certain BMIs or weights.

I don't agree that clothes look better or hang better on thin models. Or on coat hangers. I don't really understand that way of thinking. Why can't models be a bit more normal?

Beautiful dresses look good on actresses at the Oscars for example, few of whom are tall and thin enough to be catwalk models.

I can't think of any 'supermodels' other than maybe Gigi Hadid. She is certainly not 'anorexic thin', she's just slim and this is always going to be the desired looks for models because it looks good and clothes look better on them.

We're supposed to be thin. I don't see anyone promoting anorexia.

She isn't saying thin people. She is saying clinically underweight. I would rather my teen want implants than starve herself and damage her health.

If someone came on here and posted that nobody finds fat people attractive and the majority of females feel slightly sick looking at a really clinically overweight model the internet would crash with people going ballistic about it. It's so hypocritical.

We're not supposed to be thin. Thin has always, until recently, been a negative description. It's healthy to be slim, not thin.

TheFairyCaravan being overweight is actually slightly better than being underweight. So not exactly the same. I feel bad for the poor models!

Good job OP said no such thing then. Not thin people in general, but stick thin models that are just bones. It's not attractive, its starvation. It's sick.

If they could find a way of motorising a clothes line and sending clothes on hangers back and forth, like in a dry cleaners, I'm sure they would try.

but I thought the whole point of models was to be beautiful? But they are beautiful! How dare you say that because someone is not how you think they should be they are not beautiful? Blame the fashion industry, blame the clothes manufacturer, blame the modelling agency's for demanding this and putting this pressure on girls. But don't say they are not beautiful. No one has the right to belittle someone else. There's enough hatred in this world as it is!

What does "being overweight is actually slightly better than being underweight" mean? Also, who gives a fuck what men prefer?
