I'm going to be frank here. I have tattoos, I love them, it does NOT give people the right to tell me that they're awful/I'm going to hell/they'll look bad when I'm older. I'm an adult, they're my choice, I don't care what people think about them as they all have personal meaning behind them, I don't believe in heaven and hell or god and I'll deal with the getting old when I'm old!!! I'm sorry for the rant I'm just pissed off!

My answer is yeah but when I'm 80 at least i will have lived !!!! People need to butt out and manage their own lives

Funnily enough, a close friend of mine's grandmother got a tattoo (her first!) on her 80th birthday

She asked my friend to help her choose the design and take her to the tattooist, but swore her to secrecy because her grown up 'kids' wouldn't have approved

Totally agree !!! I have 18. None visible unless I want them to be. I also have a 'high powered' job. I love it when judgemental people look down their nose at me for having them and then I tell them what I do for a living. Shuts them right up !!

David Irving once told me my tattoos were rubbish. I was delighted. If he didn't like them then I'm doing something right.

Yep it's entirely your choice and no one else's business.
I think there may be something in the Bible as observant Jews are forbidden from having tattoos. But obviously that's only if you are an observant religious Jew.

I love my tattoo it has meaning for me when I'm 80 and look at it and I'm sure some others that will join it I will smile at the memories and be glad I lived my life as I wanted

I really want a tattoo, but I am so afraid of needles/it not being done right etc.

However a story for you took DS for his swimming lessons, as he was getting changed he saw a lady with stars on her foot.

DS: Mummy why does that woman have stars on her foot
Me: I don't know maybe she likes them, you should ask her
DS: But where is the moon
Me: Maybe she likes stars more than the moon
DS: But why stars triangles are just as good
Me: I don't know but you should ask the lady not me
Lady: I just loves stars they are amazing
DS: I loves stars as well they are so bright
Me: Maybe you should ask your nana to see her stars, or both your anties.

This mother day is going to be interesting as I completely forget where some of those tatoos are placed. And if you are that lady. Thank you

YANBU. I only have one, hidden mostly on my hip. DH has sleeves and other random tattoos. I'd never really come across much tattoo hate given our friends are mainly bikers/rock fans and tend to have there own or appreciate others. I was at work one day when a conversation started, can't even recall about what, when someone commented, "yeah probably some thick tattooed up to the eyeballs chav". Yes, my lovely, educated, healthcare professional DH is JUST that. He still dreams of coming to a work function, black tie (he will tie his hair back and leave the leather cut off at home obviously) and chatting away to my colleagues then ripping the sleeves off his shirt to show them. He may have watched too much WWE as a child though.

I loathe the current trend of tattoos but would never and have never said anything to person displaying their tattoos. Their choice but my choice to partake in SILENT judgement.

I personally would never have a tattoo as my view is it like putting a bumper sticker on a beautiful sports car. The car / body is beautiful as is.

But no judgment or strong feelings about anyone who has them. So many people do that I dont even think a thing when I see them.

As above, they're so ubiquitous now that you must live in an uber-conservative place if you're getting people telling you you're going to hell!

People had tattoos before the Christian god was knocking about. Look up Otzi the Ice Man.

1 in 5 people have tattoos nowadays. I can't imagine anyone under the age of 65 looking twice at them.

If someone comments rudely about your tattoos, give them as good as they've given you!

Eg.

Them: "Oh....I don't like tattoos on women! What a shame...you've ruined your arm!"

You: "Oh I don't like rude people who comment on other people's appearance..."

Or if you're especially annoyed

"I don't like people who wear too much makeup like you do."

Or whatever they have that you can pick on. It might seem rude but could teach them a lesson.

I'm pretty heavily tattooed, and I always laugh when people ask (usually in earnest consternation): "But what will you do when you're 80?"

What I will do is whip my shirt off at any given moment in the nursing home and yell "Look at my fucking amazing tattoos."

You clearly do care what people think of your tattoos OP.

Just another form of self expression really. I had a few in my younger days, picked from the generic designs in the tattoo shops. Roll on 20 years, had them ones covered up with more thought out and original tats. You will be judged for them, but these days won't be instantly put in the criminal /sailor /lesbian category. Besides, who cares..and who's doing the judging anyway?

If it's your boss telling you to cover them, fair enough. Most workplaces have policies about visible tattoos.

I'm not keen on tattoos but wouldn't dream of commenting unless asked.

However if you've gone for a heavily tattooed look or unusual designs, people will comment. It's like going for any stand-out look. Green hair, striking clothes etc will attract attention (some unwanted).

We have a 'bare below the elbows' policy at work (hospital). I was surprised by how many staff have sleeves done or else tats on the back of their neck/other visible places. I like tattoos but was always told how they affected career choices. Some part of me must have believed this!

• saw a young doctor yesterday with sleeve tattoos. Also a medical student (female) with blue hair. Times are changing. I like it 😊

I hate tattoos and am in puzzlement at how (for want of a better word) normal they have become. But anyone who tells you you're going to hell because of them can easily be dismissed (it will be from an extreme interpretation of religion which condemns the 'desecration' of the body).

I do think they may well look incongruous when you are older - I don't really get decorating your body with something so permanent and 'of the moment' on a whim - , but that's nobody's business but your own.

I hate tattoos; I think they look awful on everyone and I do silently judge.

But I would never say it to someone's face because that just isn't polite and it's not like they could easily get rid if they wanted to.
