I'm going to be frank here. I have tattoos, I love them, it does NOT give people the right to tell me that they're awful/I'm going to hell/they'll look bad when I'm older. I'm an adult, they're my choice, I don't care what people think about them as they all have personal meaning behind them, I don't believe in heaven and hell or god and I'll deal with the getting old when I'm old!!! I'm sorry for the rant I'm just pissed off! Angry

I too hate tattoos, but your body, your choice.

I do think the trend to getting loads at a young age is crazy because you are stuck with them for life and they do breakdown/look worse as you age.

I was shocked that my friends DD at 18 has 3 already.

But to tell you you'll go to hell etc, is just as bonkers.

Euripidesralph · 24/03/2017 07:02

I agreearn op I cannot fathom why anyone ever thinks it's ok to judge what I do with my body .....it in no way at all affects them and how the bloody hell does a picture on my skin impact my behaviour or morality in any possible given scenario?

I can only assume that some people don't understand the concept of tattooing and possibly are concerned the ink bleeds through to my brain in some kind of parasitic pod person science fiction and makes me into a terrible person GrinGrin

I'm a very respectable seeming mid thirties where people very rarely see the tattoos (frankly if you can see them then no I'm probably behaving inappropriately Grin) as Is dp and we both have tattoos....shockingly we are both able to hold responsible jobs be so called pillars of the community etc.....can't imagine how we achieve that

VintagePerfumista · 24/03/2017 07:05

So are these people members of your family, friends, or randoms you meet on the street? Does it often happen?

TinfoilHattie · 24/03/2017 07:11

I loathe the current trend of tattoos but would never and have never said anything to person displaying their tattoos. Their choice but my choice to partake in SILENT judgement.

This exactly. I hate tattoos as well but it's downright rude to comment on them, just as it would be to tell a stranger to get their hair cut or that their jacket doesn't suit them.

eurochick · 24/03/2017 07:16

I'm another one who thinks tats look dreadful but would never say that to someone's face. They are so commonplace now I can't believe anyone bothers commenting with the kind of extreme stuff mentioned by the OP.

ArchNotImpudent · 24/03/2017 07:18

They've become so fashionable that it demonstrates more originality of thought not to have one nowadays, so I'm surprised the OP is getting this reaction.

Iamastonished · 24/03/2017 07:20

It's rude to comment. I am not a fan of tattoos, but I would never say that to anyone who had one. They could just as easily make personal comments about my appearance that I can't change, so why bother?

lavenderandrose · 24/03/2017 07:22

TBH beyondthehills I'm not sure encouraging small children to question strangers about their appearance is a positive thing.

Ifailed · 24/03/2017 07:24

How you adorn yourself is up to you, however as it's a form of communication why be surprised when people respond?

Notso · 24/03/2017 07:26

I don't have any tattoos but I am fascinated by them.
I often see them and wonder why that person decided to have whatever it is on their body, sometimes in a wtf way sometimes in a wow way.
I sometimes want to ask if they regret any of them or get fed up of them.

Headofthehive55 · 24/03/2017 07:26

I think they look awful too. I would NEVER comment though.

I do wonder why people want chemicals which by themselves are classed as carcinogenic in their body.

I have encountered a couple of HCPs with them. They were crap at their jobs and yes I judged them. (More for their work though)

Lumpylumperson · 24/03/2017 07:29

Who on earth says you're going to hell?

Im a Christian, up until recently I was a Sunday school leader. I'm also heavily tattooed. (As is my pastor and many, many other people in the church).

I'm very, very sure that God doesn't mind about my tattoos.

Thattimeofyearagain · 24/03/2017 07:33

One of my managers ( male) did the whole " women shouldn't have tattoos" thing to me. I smiled and said" I've got one , what's your problem exactly?"" I'm middle aged , overweight -and will never be promoted with my gob-Grin

highinthesky · 24/03/2017 07:33

To me tattoos are synonymous with vulgarity.

It speaks volumes without my help, so why should I have to?

PlumsGalore · 24/03/2017 07:40

When you're older lots of other people will also have tattoos so you actually won't look unusual at all.

If you have made a decision to have a permanent pattern on your body then it is your decision to live with it and nothing to do with anyone else. Ignore.

Fortheloveofdog · 24/03/2017 07:41

I get what the OP means, she doesn't care what people think because thoughts are silent. OP objects to people dumping their opinion on her when she hasn't asked for it.

PlumsGalore · 24/03/2017 07:41

Oh, and I DONT have tattoos, but you only have to go to the swimming pool to see how many people do.

icanteven · 24/03/2017 07:43

The sheer blinding rudeness somebody who says, unsolicited and to your face, that something about your appearance is ugly, wrong or will send you to hell (!) says far more about them than you.

It's like being catcalled - it's all about the person catcalling, not the object of their abuse.

The tattoos themselves are neither here me there, really, although I've had mine for 22 years and I do NOT like it.

Laiste · 24/03/2017 07:44

DH and i are 'beige', (ie un-tatoo'd, to quote the great Billy Connolly) Grin

The way everyone seems to be rushing out to get done these days i really think we'll be the only ones in the care home without a tat if we get to our 80s.

justinelibertine · 24/03/2017 07:48

My auntie has a tattoo, her nipple from breast reconsruction. She makes sure she mentions this when we tell her people don't like our tattoos. Ie my mum, who is very rude about mine.
I have tattos to cover my stretchmarks.

Anniegetyourgun · 24/03/2017 07:49

Fashions change. Tattoos are in. Not necessarily here to stay, but here for a good long while I should imagine. They're no longer a class indicator. I don't do them myself, can't imagine wanting to, but then nobody's trying to force me to. For those many, many people who do, good on yer, but I would advise you not to get too many at a young age because you need to leave some room to mark later life events!

I actually didn't like the concept of tattoos at all until a few years ago when a friend showed me her new one, ivy twining down her arm from the shoulder, and it looked tasteful and elegant. Possibly because of the person it was on. Anyway, ivy isn't going to look horrible in 40 years' time, just a bit blurry probably, and when you're 80 would you really care? The rest of your body has gone west already, except for the bits that went south. A bit of ink is the least of your worries.

Lumpylumperson · 24/03/2017 07:49

To me tattoos are synonymous with vulgarity

To me, shallow judgements are synonymous with naivety and a lack of social intelligence.

RitaMills · 24/03/2017 07:50

I didn't used to like tattoos, when I was a young teenager the popular tatoos were cartoon caracters (Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Tweety Pie), little devils/ angels on the shoulder blades or dolphins around the pierced belly buttons I always thought they looked beyond shit and it put me off.

picklemepopcorn · 24/03/2017 07:52

I've nothing against tattoos but I do think they spoil many a nice outfit. I get unreasonably irritated by half a tattoo peeking out of a short skirt, sleeve or bodice line. Whole tattoo, no problem. No tattoo, no problem. Slightly random sticking out piece of tattoo spoiling the line of a carefully designed outfit... Tut.

Meant to add that today's tattoos are works of art, the watercolour ones are amazing. There was a 'post your tattoos' thread on here a while ago and some of theme were absolutely amazing. I'd hate to be stuck with the old style tattoos. But I hate needles so I will always remain tattoo free.
