AIBU to think Katie Hopkins is straying closer and closer to the line that separates legitimate "right wing" politics, and unacceptable "far right" extremism?

I find this article a) utterly incoherent in its argument and b) utterly abhorrent in its content....

Yesterday's attack is deeply deeply saddening- we live in London and we're heartbroken that this has happened again- but I actually find Katie's bile almost as saddening and troubling- as I fear these are views held by many many more people... sure these are just words, and yesterday saw vile, violent actions... but those actions would have begun with words of hate and anger too...

Anyone who agrees with Katie Hopkins in that article.

I haven't read everything Katie Hopkins has written, thank God.

However, she is a professional troll who spreads hate, either because she really is deeply stupid or just to make money.

Lweji · 24/03/2017 08:28

She also didn't say anyone was a troll

if you equate all those who think differently with a troll

Diversion tactics...

merrymouse · 24/03/2017 08:30

Well yes lweji...

'Being unbalanced' has a different meaning.

Lweji · 24/03/2017 08:31

... Except Katie.

Both unbalanced and a troll.

merrymouse · 24/03/2017 08:33

And Katie Hopkins is a professional troll.

Her lawyers more or less admitted in court that she will say anything on Twitter to raise her profile, neither knowing not caring whether it is true.

Imjustapoorboy · 24/03/2017 08:36

Ah the Katie or the Hop as I like to call her. As she does like to hop from one vitriolic rant to the next

It must be so hard having all that bile inside her. I'm sure she just wants to say to her kids 'Yes sweetie ofcourse you can go and play with Mohammed across the road - just tell his mummy I don't mean what I say I really don't'

I view her as the turd on Unity Mitfords shoe. She really wants to be so much part of the rockin right wing fascist crew she'll do anything to be there

LullabelleBates · 24/03/2017 08:40

Terrorists are NOT Muslims. FACT!

GrommitsEarsHurt · 24/03/2017 08:46

Er, yes Lweji. I commented on the quote you just gave further above Hmm

The point you made was that by and large men were more dangerous than Muslims. Aside for the fact that I find it offensive that you seem to imply that Muslims are a different species, I think that it is a convoluted, false equivalency. Men are not more dangerous than Islamic Extremists, no, despite the fact that men (including Muslim men) are more violent than women across societies. For all the reasons I previously commented on, not least that they don't tend to kill women for not wanting to become men.

if that "makes your point for you" then I'm afraid that your point wasn't as evident as perhaps thought. The only way your point makes sense is for a closet racist to argue against it and realise they are wrong.........except I'm not. I am a labour voting, bremain voting liberal.

Though I have to say, that whilst this thread oozes with self-congratulation from some liberals, that sort of congratulatory echo chamber, fermented by not even attempting to understand the views of others hasn't really won us liberals any success recently has it? what was that about understanding why people feel the way they do, so that we can persuade them to change their minds?

Applebite · 24/03/2017 08:51

Lullabelle - but they think they are. And they use that platform to spread their poison.

MsHooliesCardigan · 24/03/2017 08:54

I think Sadiq's speech was spot on as was Ken Livingstone's speech after the 2005 bombings when he said that London is the whole world in one city and pleaded in Londoners not to turn on each other. They didn't and they won't this time. I think that KH dislikes London because it is proof that people of all races and faiths can generally get along with each other. As Sadiq said, Londoners don't just 'tolerate' diversity which implies grudgingly putting up with it, they celebrate it.
And I haven't seen anyone looking cowed or scared. I just see people going to work and school like they always do or walking the dog like they always do.

FrenchLavender · 24/03/2017 08:56

Lulla Does it really matter whether you or anyone else considers them to be good/proper Muslims or not? The thing is, they identify as purist, fundamentalist Muslims and they want to wage war on infidels and non believers as the Quraa when taken literally, urges them to do, not just once in some vague and woolly quote that is taken out of context, but many, many times in many texts, quite graphically and specifically. And they do it in the name of Islam. So whether you or I think they fit the acceptable profile of a Muslim is hardly the point.

FrenchLavender · 24/03/2017 08:57

Quran. FFS autocorrect is really getting on my tits.

LullabelleBates · 24/03/2017 09:00

Applebite - Yes, my point excactly!

LullabelleBates · 24/03/2017 09:00

exactly!!

GrommitsEarsHurt · 24/03/2017 09:05

And "diversion tactics".......against what may I ask Lweji?

Have you and merrymouse noticed that very few people who agreed with KH have stayed around with you to discuss why? Now, well done for "winning the argument", hurray, big back slaps, truly.......but as a fellow liberal who hates KH and what she wrote, and hates the close minded, knee jerk reaction that some people have when faced with Extremist Islam, I am, quite frankly annoyed.

My family has non-white Muslim members in the US (so thanks for the patronising US education Merry, I knew nothing about it beforehand, obviously....). It is horrible seeing them go to India to perform surgery and for us not to know if he will get back into the States because he has brown skin and is a Muslim. This shit is too important to be handled badly.

I want people to change their minds about being racist towards Muslims. And that includes accepting the reality that there are Extremists Muslims, in our communities, who want to hurt people, and that a sizeable minority of other Muslims agree with them. Muslims know this. And we need people'sminds to be changed. You do that by reaching out to where they are at, acknowledging that some of their fears are valid, but most are without foundation. You may think you have won your argument, but you haven't helped my family, who live with racial abuse and tension every day. And you then turn on a fellow liberal like myself, when I dislike you being hypocritical and making sweeping statements about KH supporters.

This is reality, not theory, for my family (and it may be for yours too, I don't know), but I will not stand with you for what you seem to want. Which comes across as everyone who doesn't agree with you to STFU. That is not helping! Winning hearts and minds is an expression for a reason. Not being smarmy and trying to trip people up and passive aggressive Wink If you think you are helping, then God help us all.

merrymouse · 24/03/2017 09:11

not even attempting to understand the views of others hasn't really won us liberals any success recently has it

Please explain how reading this article would make anyone better informed or increase understanding.

nikelarsedstirgin · 24/03/2017 09:14

I have to agree an the literal interpretation... that does not mean in any way at all that I am anti muslim, but these are ancient texts and some elements of those texts encourage behaviour that is not acceptible in a modern, multicultural society. I think All quarans should be printed with this as a waring printed underneath each paragraph which is dangerous in the modern world. Same with all religious texts including the bible.

A bit like the offputting messages on a fag packet.

nikelarsedstirgin · 24/03/2017 09:19

Please ignore the hideous spelling mistake, bloody autocorrect again.

derxa · 24/03/2017 09:25

Step away Grommits It's not worth the aggro. It's all a case of I'm right on the Internet.

merrymouse · 24/03/2017 09:30

I am not turning on you, I am disagreeing with you about whether there is any reason to agree with an article by Katie Hopkins.

The relevance of America is Hopkins is a vocal supporter of Trump, and according to atleast one poster on this thread, Trump will save us.
My intention isn't to patronise you, it is to make a point about the wider influence of some of the punditry over the last few days and the harm it does. You are free to disagree.

I don't know why people haven't been able to explain why they like Hopkins' article. They might have been scared off by the prospect of being challenged, they might not have anything to say, or they might not really care. People are prepared to argue for days over the correct use of a loo brush on MN, if they feel they have a point, so I suspect there aren't loads of people desperate to defend Hopkins but too timid to do so.

nikelarsedstirgin · 24/03/2017 09:30

Yes to left and right wing liberals, conversation and discussion involving all opinions is welcomed.

The guardian is my bible type of illiberal left and regressive left do not see the need to converse with anyone outside of their own bubble are causing a problem.

Lweji · 24/03/2017 09:32

Aside for the fact that I find it offensive that you seem to imply that Muslims are a different species
Hmm

Not sure you really want to have a discussion or an argument.

Confused

nikelarsedstirgin · 24/03/2017 09:35

Who did that lweji?

Lweji · 24/03/2017 09:37

I do wonder why some people have come here to say they agree with KH, didn't say why, even when asked and left immediately.

That is not an argument won. It's not the point.
It seems to me, though, that it's not us who don't want to engage or listen to the other side.
I've asked here many questions about people's positions to try and clarify what they are for or what they're proposing.

Then some pps have indeed used diversionary tactics to avoid proper discussion of the issues.

BillSykesDog · 24/03/2017 09:40

All quarans should be printed with this as a waring printed underneath each paragraph which is dangerous in the modern world

That would be blasphemy though. It would be the satanic verses all over again. Publishers would be bombed and beheaded.
