AIBU to think Katie Hopkins is straying closer and closer to the line that separates legitimate "right wing" politics, and unacceptable "far right" extremism?

I find this article a) utterly incoherent in its argument and b) utterly abhorrent in its content....

Yesterday's attack is deeply deeply saddening- we live in London and we're heartbroken that this has happened again- but I actually find Katie's bile almost as saddening and troubling- as I fear these are views held by many many more people... sure these are just words, and yesterday saw vile, violent actions... but those actions would have begun with words of hate and anger too...

Is 52% against lgbt that high?

I expected it to be higher actually.

I do not in any way think it is ok to be anti lgbt but 52% against doesn't sound that high to me.

squishysquirmy · 23/03/2017 14:29

I know this is a scary thought, but have you thought about how easy it is for those with malicious intent to kill large amounts of people?
Especially when it comes to targeting soft targets -all you need is a car.
Even the most draconian state wouldn't be able to stop all those determined to kill.
Surveillance helps, but it would be impossible to intercept every lone wolf who is not in contact with known extremists.
If we were truly surrounded by large numbers of people who wanted to kill us, this type of incident would be a daily occurrence in the UK.

It is not.

Yes - the security service should continue appropriate surveilance, and yes high risk targets should continue being protected, and the police and security forces should be funded and trained to the highest standards. Bollards should be used where appropriate too.
But spreading hate and prejudice against innocent Muslims will make this country more dangerous, not less.

egosumquisum1 · 23/03/2017 14:30

Can anybody give me a bit more on this please

You know how there are Christians who only adhere to different parts of the Bible and have different interpretations?

Same for Islam.

nikelarsedstirgin · 23/03/2017 14:32

But spreading hate and prejudice against innocent Muslims will make this country more dangerous, not less.

I think most people (except for kh) would probably agree with that

egosumquisum1 · 23/03/2017 14:32

I bet there are pockets of communities all over the UK who think like that. And when you break down by age and religious beliefs, you'll get more variance,

Looking into statistics tells you a lot than simple headline data. It also helps challenge people who post them to suit their agenda.

Hopkins does that.

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 23/03/2017 14:33

"This thread is not a condemnation of Western bigotry against Muslims. It's a condemnation of Katie Hopkins."

Who has Western values and is condemning Muslim bigotry? No?

nikelarsedstirgin · 23/03/2017 14:33

Radical Christianity is more of a problem in the states than it is here.

It does exist.

egosumquisum1 · 23/03/2017 14:33

Has someone told Trump that? He is a gift to ISIS.

squishysquirmy · 23/03/2017 14:36

I'd love to tell him that, egosumquisum1.

Bannon and ISIS both want all out war between Muslims and Christians.

ghostyslovesheets · 23/03/2017 14:39

yes the extreme right and extreme Muslim groups essentially share the same world view and want the same ends - scary

CoolCarrie · 23/03/2017 14:39

Karen Armstrong has written about the bible, Islam and her previous life as a nun so worth looking for her books.

egosumquisum1 · 23/03/2017 14:39

I'm sure she's reading this.
Katie, I hope your clicks and the pay you get are worth it.
You are part of the problem and are definitely not part of the solution.
You have a column, a radio show and many people on Twitter. Ask yourself what you are doing to make this world a safer place.

History will judge you as a minor player at this time, as someone who had the platform and used it to make society worse, not better. I hope you think it's worth it.

user1484578224 · 23/03/2017 14:40

ego are you Muslim? btw I am not picking a fight I am interested.

So a Christian may believe in the Holy Ghost but not believe it is wrong to be gay......being an example.

How would that work in Islam?

Lweji · 23/03/2017 14:42

No they interviewed a sample of Muslims who lived in an area that was 20% or more Muslim

Says a biased liberal left guardian journalist, who's job it was to discredit the survey.

I posted the link. Says the ICM, actually.

nikelarsedstirgin · 23/03/2017 14:43

I don't like the term far right.

I am moderately right wing and condemn all fascism.

Far left fascism has played out accross the globe in many communist regimes.

It conflates idea of capitalist economy with fascism. I do not believe there is any connection.

squishysquirmy · 23/03/2017 14:43

Not exactly the same ghosty, but I get what you mean.
Also worth remembering that neither the extreme right, nor extreme Islam are one homogenous, united group. There are subsets of beliefs and degrees of violence within both groups.

Sometimes I think that if the angry men wearing balaclavas in EDL videos were born in a different religion, to different parents, they would be angry ISIS supporters.

Lweji · 23/03/2017 14:44

Islam is a spectrum of beliefs.

Can anybody give me a bit more on this please?

They so would.

egosumquisum1 · 23/03/2017 14:45

No. Just someone who knows enough about religion to know that people who claim to be Christian / Muslim / Jewish etc all seem to have different interpretations of that faith and what it means to them.

Very true ego She's a shit stirrer. And has a lot of bills to pay. Why people agree with her I've no idea. Although I can't stand the hearts and tealights

user1484578224 · 23/03/2017 14:47

ok thanks.

egosumquisum1 · 23/03/2017 14:49

Says a biased liberal left guardian journalist, who's job it was to discredit the survey

That's how they carried out the survey.

That is a real FACT. Not fake news. Real facts.
They went face to face in areas that are 20% Muslim.FACT

Areas with such a high concentration of Muslims have particular characteristics. FACT

That means you can't say that poll reflects the views of Muslims. FACT

Not Fake news.

squishysquirmy · 23/03/2017 14:50

nikelarsedstirgin: When I use the term "far right", I do not in any wish to slur the right wing as a wholee.
I myself am mainly centre left, but I can appreciate that most of those to the right of the political spectrum are appalled by the attitudes of the "far right" and "alt right". I don't think either of those terms are perfect synonyms for fascism, although there is plenty of overlap.
Intolerant, fascist beliefs keep popping up in different forms, in different places at different times like some hideous mutated virus.
