AIBU to think Katie Hopkins is straying closer and closer to the line that separates legitimate "right wing" politics, and unacceptable "far right" extremism?

I find this article a) utterly incoherent in its argument and b) utterly abhorrent in its content....

Yesterday's attack is deeply deeply saddening- we live in London and we're heartbroken that this has happened again- but I actually find Katie's bile almost as saddening and troubling- as I fear these are views held by many many more people... sure these are just words, and yesterday saw vile, violent actions... but those actions would have begun with words of hate and anger too...

I love living in our democratic society. We're very lucky to have the freedoms we have, to say what we want when we want; to live with freedoms others can only imagine. I don't want Sharia Law, I don't want to be told what to wear, when to speak, how to live...turn the clock back 500 years. That was a dark time in history, we're not proud but it IS history and we have to move on and try, where possible, to live a civilised existence.

LouKout · 23/03/2017 11:45

I stopped reading after this post

Give an inch, and we'll be under Taliban control before we know it.

What a load of nonsense.

Bigotry and right wing extremism are becoming mainstream in the UK now.

EnormousTiger · 23/03/2017 11:45

Mucho f that Katie H article inked to is fine. I want free speech even if I don't always agree with people. It is very easy to come up with these cardboard cut out hate figures - we all hate Trump etc or all Brexiters are racists. Life is never black and white. It is always shades of grey.

However most of us agree we should challenge everythign we are told and look for evidence always and also speak out when groups or people say things which are wrong but in general try to live our lives in tolerance and with love of others particularly those whose views we disagree with.

The message of Jesus was that is was dead easy to love your family but to love others includes those whom we hate - that is the lesson.

We should speak out if we see sexism and racism but of course most of all where we see an intention to kill others wherever we see it. If people's feelings are hurt that's just tough.

Lweji · 23/03/2017 11:46

There's a very big difference between people who attack people in a country just because they want to attack people in general and just happen to be in a country and those who want to specifically attack a country.

Surely it's just a matter of a different focus. The killing motivation is still there. They just need an excuse. For this guy yesterday it may have been religion or politics. For others it could be racism, sexism, or just rage.

What do we know of his specific motivations or mental health?

From what I've seen about ISIS and even Al Qaeda, at the core, they are more motivated by violence, power and money than religion.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 23/03/2017 11:46

Her comments are never helpful or constructive but always divisive. Which is the whole point.

LouKout · 23/03/2017 11:46

Plus the people who propagate such bigotry are only making the problem worse.

lottieandmia · 23/03/2017 11:48

Why anyone thinks that people care about this nobody's opinions is completely beyond me...

Lweji · 23/03/2017 11:49

It seems to me that liberals increasingly only want freedom of speech when everyone agrees with them

I don't think anyone has suggested that Katie should be arrested and prevented from writing publicly.

However, we do (and should) have our freedom to call her out on what she writes. Don't you agree?

My brother-in-laws family felt their son had let the family down very badly, marrying a white girl.

Well, this family was racist. As some white families are racist. What's the conclusion?

SusannahL · 23/03/2017 11:49

I completely agree with everything she said.
The trouble is in these politically correct times we live in now, so few people are prepared to speak the truth.

Lweji · 23/03/2017 11:49

Why anyone thinks that people care about this nobody's opinions is completely beyond me...

Some people seem to care. Even agree. (see this thread)

Lweji · 23/03/2017 11:50

SusannahL

What truth?

calli335 · 23/03/2017 11:51

I don't know how people can compare this to the IRA terrorist acts. This can never be stopped which is what makes it so frightening. There is no reason for it except for a deep hatred of the West and there will be no negotiation/no stopping it until world domination is achieved. You only had to look at the live comments yesterday to see the number of thumbs up and smiley faces. The slaughtering and hatred preaching behind closed doors will continue and we are powerless to stop it. I absolutely agree with KH's article sadly.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 23/03/2017 11:53

What does politically correct mean? Not wanting people to espouse hate speech? Misogyny, racism, discriminatory language. Why is PC a bad thing?

Lweji · 23/03/2017 11:53

You only had to look at the live comments yesterday to see the number of thumbs up and smiley faces. The slaughtering and hatred preaching behind closed doors will continue and we are powerless to stop it.

Sadly, it also applies to racist comments, and to hate preaching against Muslims, Blacks, Women, etc.

We can never get rid of hate, but we can surely limit its effects.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 23/03/2017 11:56

How do you stop any terrorist regardless of their belief?

bigmouthstrikesagain · 23/03/2017 11:56

This is an isolated act of violence carried out by one violent disaffected individual. He wanted to make some deranged political / religious point by attacking individuals outside the House of Parliament - he should not be rewarded by being given any significance as part of an organised terrorist co-ordinated attack on the west/ liberal democracy.

The country should not be in fear, the government appears to be responding appropriately. TM is appearing statesmanlike and serious - this will probably strengthen her position. Katie Hopkins is another tabloid hack spouting controversy for cash she is not revealing some unspoken truth she is mouthing off for money.

Xenophile · 23/03/2017 11:57

The trouble is in these politically correct times we live in now, so few people are prepared to speak the truth

You're so right. There's far too much namby pamby political correctness in the world. We should go back to a time when you could be as offensive, cruel and rude as it's possible to be and have people slap us on the back and tell us how we're the voice of the people. That'd just be ace.

Katie Hopkins and the type of "person" who agrees with her are utter shits.

And that's the truth.

LouKout · 23/03/2017 11:58

Theyre not politically correct times even either. Far from it (sadly)

allegretto · 23/03/2017 11:59

This can never be stopped which is what makes it so frightening.

Why do you think it can never be stopped? Islam has been around for centuries but this type of terrorism is quite recent - why do you think that is? You do realize that people study terrorism and know far more about the reasons behind it than what is put in Daily Fail articles?

SusannahL · 23/03/2017 11:59

What truth?
Well the truth to say that our current 'open door' policy on immigration sadly means that there will be more of these incidents.
March 2019 can't come soon enough.

egosumquisum1 · 23/03/2017 12:01

March 2019 can't come soon enough

You do know that this was a home grown terrorist?

Applebite · 23/03/2017 12:01

But Lweji - There IS a difference between serial killers and people motivated by religious and political ideology to kill civilians, though. It's daft to pretend that there's isn't.

One can actually be tackled - by more people making an effort to integrate (that cuts both ways; revolting nobs like Britain first and Katie Hopkins are just as responsible for divisions and hatred as are the firebrand hate preachers that they rail against); by people in the community making difficult decisions to inform when their relatives or friends become more ideological (as many of them already do, hence so many plots being foiled); by better education in schools, etc.

To try and make out that it's anti-Muslim or racist to say that there is a bigger threat from hatred from a tiny section of a community just because there are evil people from other backgrounds too is naive and misses the opportunity to start tackling it. Threats are coming from some hardline Muslims, every single day. There are people out there right now who are cheering what happened yesterday. we all need to work together, Muslim, Christian, atheist, agnostic, Jedi sodding knight, to minimise the spread of that poison.

egosumquisum1 · 23/03/2017 12:02

Well the truth to say that our current 'open door' policy on immigration sadly means that there will be more of these incidents

And you seem to be confusing EU immigration with a refugee policy...

LouKout · 23/03/2017 12:03

The attacker in this instance was British born

Keeley71 · 23/03/2017 12:04

She's entitled to her opinion.
Millions will agree with her.
