Noel Fielding hosting Bake Off on Channel 4

Sorry if this already has been written about in a thread elsewhere.

I've just seen that Noel Fielding (the comedian from The Mighty Boosh) is confirmed as the new host of the Bake Off alongside Sandi Toksvig.

I'm quite surprised, to be honest. What does everyone else think?

I think channel 4, have pulled off a stroke of genius.

SoupDragon · 17/03/2017 07:57

It seems a poor match to the programme with both of them. Sandi is a great presenter but I think more suited to the "intellectual" shows as she has that kind of wit. Noel Fielding seems totally mismatched.

I think Pru will be fine but I do think they've chosen poorly with the presenters.

jay55 · 17/03/2017 08:03

I don't think Pru Leith came over well when it was leaked it was her. I'd have liked someone younger to help adjust from Mary.

MOISTOWLETT · 17/03/2017 08:05

I can't stand Sandi Toksvig and I don't know who the other lady is but I love Noel Fielding so I will definitely be giving it a go Grin

AnoiseAnnoysanOyster · 17/03/2017 08:07

I like them both, although I think Noel Fielding is an odd choice.

The problem with it will be channel 4's constant need for catch ups after every ad break. They spend half the programme retelling you what happened three minutes ago and it's fucking annoying.

Pyjamaface · 17/03/2017 08:08

Noel Fielding seems an odd choice to me, really out of place with the others. But, after finding out that Johnny Vegas has a degree in ceramics last night, NF could be an amazing baker.

We'll see

andpropersteel · 17/03/2017 08:14

My OH thought it was Laurence Llewelyn Bowen presenting Bake Off until I told him that it was actually Noel Fielding in that photo...

Dunno which choice is weirder tbh.

ButtercupChain · 17/03/2017 08:15

No. That is all.

LilacSpatula · 17/03/2017 08:19

I've met a few famous people but Noel Fielding has to be the rudest person I have ever met. I hope he fails spectacularly.

Batteriesallgone · 17/03/2017 08:19

Interesting. I'll watch probably. Just hope Sandi and Noel don't end up with a sensible mum / wacky son dynamic. Won't do either of them any favours I think

iklboo · 17/03/2017 08:22

It kind of feels like Jessica Hynes' character from Twenty Twelve / W1A & her gang were put in charge of the casting.

Mighty Croquembouche.

Embekkisson1 · 17/03/2017 08:24

I dont like Prue Leith , I think she's like a Head Mistress , she doesn't look very approachable . Everyone loved Mary Berry , she's like everyone's Grandma , very knowledgable but sweet and caring .

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/03/2017 08:25

He's too much of an ego I think. I remember watching a quiz with him and Russell brand and they were literally crawling over each other to get themselves heard and noticed, by being the most extreme and 'funniest'. Can't say I think of him when i think of bake off.

RebootYourEngine · 17/03/2017 08:31

Pyjama i think my mouth was like this Shock last night when johnny vegas appeared. I would have quite liked to have seen on bake off.

KittyLane1 · 17/03/2017 08:31

There are a lot of rumours about NF......

MrFirthsDate · 17/03/2017 08:34

Never mind Noel Fieding - Sandi Toksvig makes me want to scream, so on the basis that her unfunny, voice grating presence will be there.....I'm never watching again!

BoyFromTheBigBadCity · 17/03/2017 08:53

I think it's a clever choice - it makes it clear it will be different, rather than a poor copy.

silkpyjamasallday · 17/03/2017 08:59

Meh, I absolutely loathe Mel and Sue, will turn channel if I see them and so I never watched gbbo. I do however love Noel so maybe I'll watch it now, I do like cakes sooo....

RortyCrankle · 17/03/2017 09:21

I wasn't inclined to watch it after the move to C4 but now I know the presenters will be Toksvig and Fielding that's put the lid on it for me. No thanks.

Schwifty · 17/03/2017 10:40

KittyLane1 such as? Colour me intrigued!

ShowMePotatoSalad · 17/03/2017 10:43

This is almost as weird as when they put Una Stubbs and Richard Bacon together to host that painting challenge programme.

Bluntness100 · 17/03/2017 10:46

I also think Pru leith is a bit head mistress, she lacks the warmth of Mary berry.

The charm in the program was really it's quintessential Britishness, it's self depreciating and silly good humour which made it watchable and likeable. That's what made it a run away hit. None of these presenters are known for these skills.

So they have moved away from what made it a success. Maybe deciding if they can't emulate not to bother trying, and I suspect, this change, coupled with the ad breaks will spell the end of the success it had.

AntiQuitted · 17/03/2017 10:47

Dammit! I was going to boycott it as I couldn't justify watching it just to hate on Hollywood but I'm intrigued!

lifeissweet · 17/03/2017 10:59

I agree with magic markers about the annoying editing on channel 4 where you get a recap and a teaser before and after each ad break - as if we all have short term memory loss. I really hope they don't do too much of that because it spoilt shows for me.

MackerelOfFact · 17/03/2017 11:05

Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding are a very weird pairing! Can't imagine them having any on-screen chemistry whatsoever. Totally agree with WizardOfToss that it's as though they've just picked random names out of a hat.

I'm going to miss the sharp Mel/Sue/Mary tailoring.
