Things that can never be saved

Am I the only one who thinks that corn beef is just one of those delicacies that can never be saved, it does not matter how much you try to make it taste nice, it is just awful? Followed by the pointlessness that is tomatoes(boring and acidic) and oranges(hate how it explodes in the mouth and untidy to eat)?

OP posts:
SparkleTwinkleGoldGlitter · 16/03/2017 12:22

No I am talking about corned beef

RhodaBorrocks · 16/03/2017 12:23

Dear God I want a corned beef and tomato sarnie for lunch now!

I'm with you on the oranges though!

HateSummer · 16/03/2017 12:25

Never had corned beef. I hated tomatoes as a child, but love them as an adult. How can you not like a nice juicy cherry tomato? And oranges, how can you not enjoy a nice juicy easy peeler satsuma? Hardly any pith on it either.

How can anyone not like staple food like pasta, bread and potatoes?! Odd.

Oldraver · 16/03/2017 12:27

Corned beef needs to be eaten at room temperature.... straight out the fridge and it is yuk

MusicToMyEars800 · 16/03/2017 12:33

Nannplum666 yy my mum used to make this on a weekly basis, I loved it! I haven't had it in years.. we aren't even northern Grin
DJ pomegranates are a nightmare!

Clandestino · 16/03/2017 12:34

Our Nigerian flatmate used to make corn beef with palm oil and a fierce tomato-based (well, more or less chilli in different forms based) sauce. It was yummy and I never managed to recreate it.

GeekGoddess · 16/03/2017 12:37

God all the dirty suggestions on this thread... I'm starving! Grin

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 16/03/2017 12:38

My favourite sandwich is corned beef with cheddar cheese and Bramston pickle! YUM!

FineSally · 16/03/2017 12:48

I love a corned beef sandwich with salad & mayo, but it has to be on granary bread, preferably in a roll Smile

For some reason I absolutely HATE the smell of warm corned beef & so despite being a Northerner I have never cooked corned beef hash.

SeamstressfromTreacleMineRoad · 16/03/2017 13:04

Corned beef, egg and chips..... Yummmm..!!! Grin

allegretto · 16/03/2017 13:04

Cold tomatoes from the fridge are awful. Buy or grow tasty ones, warm them up on a sunny windowsill (or better still, don't put them in the fridge) and drizzle with olive old and salt - yummy.

1nsanityscatching · 16/03/2017 13:10

Corned beef on a jacket spud with beans is delicious. Also like chips, corned beef, egg and beans.

Noodoodle · 16/03/2017 13:13

I'd forgotten about corned beef and pickle being lovely, thanks pp!

Ds is partial to having it with lettuce.

I'd add brown rice as something unsavable!!! Tried it twice now, smelled disgutingly earthy during cooking so added a stock pot thing. Nasty. The next time we had it with chicken and a tomato/basil sauce (I heaped salt on mine) still couldn't diaguise the earthy horrible taste or smell. I even "washed" it through with cold water...how on earth do people eat it?!

Noodoodle · 16/03/2017 13:14

Disguise not diaguise!

StinginBelle13 · 16/03/2017 13:15

Corned beef and ready salted crisps in Heinz tomato soup. Perfect!!

peaceloveandbiscuits · 16/03/2017 13:22

Nah corned beef sandwiches are a thing of beauty, and I say that as someone who hasn't eaten meat in twenty years.

StinginBelle13 · 16/03/2017 13:23

Same as me peaceloveandbiscuits, I'm veggie but a corned beef sarnie is just mwah!

Rumtopf · 16/03/2017 13:25

Tomatoes fresh from the garden, with a bit of basil, red onion, olive oil and salt is actually the food of the gods, I live on this is the summer.
Oranges take forever for me to peel properly but once they have not a smidgen of peel they're quite nice really.

Corned beef, haslet, tongue, luncheon meat, nope just no. My grandparents loved things like this for lunch or sandwich paste, still makes me shudder!

Firesuit · 16/03/2017 13:26

Fried rice is one of my favourite dishes, one of the ingredients is any chopped up pre-cooked meat. Chicken breast, prawns or sliced sausage are the most obvious meats, but actually corned beef gives the best result of all.

acornsandnuts · 16/03/2017 13:31

I'm going with gravy. It makes all your food taste of gravy. Pubs get away with a multitude of sins with Sunday lunch if they provide over powering gravy, DH will rave about a meal while I sit with my gravyless food KNOWING the chef can't cook.

Lewwat · 16/03/2017 13:31

YAB sooooo U

Corn beef hash.

Enough said

paxillin · 16/03/2017 13:40

Sorry to derail, but what makes beef "corned"? I always think of calluses on feet.

TheNoodlesIncident · 16/03/2017 13:43

Marks & Spencer extra lean corned beef is beautiful. Lovely in a sandwich. Not dry at all, probably the butter helps but it's just juicy enough without all those little pips of lard the cheap versions have.

Orange pith is the work of the devil but once you get rid of the grim stuff the actual orange is nice. So much work though, peeling off every little string...

(I really want stovies now, not had it for years, but I'm scheduled to be doing shepherd's pie instead, so it will have to wait.)

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 16/03/2017 13:43

Pomegranates and lychees - love the taste but I swear it takes more calories to prepare them than it does to eat them. Also cherries, I go mad for cherries but thats because I have to eat a mountain of them to actually consume a decent portion when you factor in the stones.

paxillin · 16/03/2017 13:43

Things that cannot be saved:

  1. Vegetable marrows. Edible (just), but any other vegetable would be nicer in the recipe.
  2. Turkey. Also quite nice, but replace with any other bird, duck or goose maybe for a nicer flavour in the same dish.
  3. Carp. Bleurgh, any fish or other water creature makes the whole dish so much more palatable.
  4. White chocolate. Dark or milk replace it nicely to improve any dish.
