Things that can never be saved

Am I the only one who thinks that corn beef is just one of those delicacies that can never be saved, it does not matter how much you try to make it taste nice, it is just awful? Followed by the pointlessness that is tomatoes(boring and acidic) and oranges(hate how it explodes in the mouth and untidy to eat)?

paxillin, Wikipedia says: Corned beef is a salt-cured beef product. The term comes from the treatment of the meat with large grained rock salt, also called "corns" of salt

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 16/03/2017 13:46

Corned beef and cheese cooked in one of those breville toasters - which is also a fuck on to clean afterwards but so worth it!

paxillin · 16/03/2017 13:47

Thanks, TheNoodlesIncident.

Corned beef hash ... buff said

madmoon · 16/03/2017 13:50

I love tinned corned beef rarely eat it though , it's lovely mashed up with onion pepper salt and mash spud checked In a loaf tin covered with grated cheese and baked mmmmm

Withershins · 16/03/2017 13:50

I had the same opinion about Tomatoes, then I found out that storing them in a fridge actually affects the flavour. I now buy the best quality ones I can and never put them in the fridge Smile

badger2005 · 16/03/2017 13:50

But oranges and tomatoes are surely two of the loveliest foods in the world?!
I don't mind the orange pith at all. I like it when they are juicy, but can also like an old dried up orange. You know those dried up clemantines you get that are kind of concentrated? I just don't like them to be sour. I could happily eat 3 in a row or probably a lot more if I let myself.

And tomatoes?! On toast, with salt and pepper? So delicious.
Can't remember the taste of corned beef - not eaten meat for too long. I think the smell of it is fine, but then I sort of almost like the smell of dog food...

badger2005 · 16/03/2017 13:52

Oh, vegetable marrows paxillin. Yes, they do seem a bit bland and watery. Aren't they just overgrown courgettes though, and courgettes are lovely if you roast them.

shirleycartersaidso · 16/03/2017 13:53

Thenoodle - bang on, it's the only acceptable form of corned beef. White bread and butter sandwich with that corned beef is amazing.

Ruhrpott · 16/03/2017 13:55

I love corned beef hash

Jux · 16/03/2017 13:57

I like corned beef. It's pretty good in a sandwich with salad cream. And tomatoes.

If you grow tomatoes, you will find that they are far from boring, different varieties have different flavours and properties, and all are delicious.

What can't be saved is Spam.

isseywithcats · 16/03/2017 13:57

corned beef and branston pickle on a butty yum yum as long as the corned beef has been in the fridge

or my version of corned beef hash cubed potatoes cooked, sliced red onions and mushrooms fried in butter, cubed corned beef, mix all together with lots of butter , salt and black pepper to taste, then into the oven at 200 for 30 minutes till the potatoes go brown and crispy, served with brown or bbq sauce delishous

JonesyAndTheSalad · 16/03/2017 13:57

Pea I'm interested in your joints and excema getting better with no oranges and tomatoes!

Was it the acid in them do you think?

I have a skin condition AND aching joints. Doctors say they're unrelated and can't do a thing as they're not arthiritis or anything.

I wonder if I stop eating anything acidic I might improve. I don't eat many tomatoes but some...what else is acidic?

The80sweregreat · 16/03/2017 14:00

i agree about Beef, its just tasteless these days, i have trouble cooking it so its tender and not like an old boot, even the pricey cuts. i have given up on roasts - its become a rare thing but was always on the menu a few years back, now not so much. Not keen on any corned beef, but love tomatoes.

GloriaGaynor · 16/03/2017 14:07

Who eats corned beef in 2017? There's not a war on y'know. Grin

GloriaGaynor · 16/03/2017 14:08

Oh no I'm thinking of spam. Grin

ppeatfruit · 16/03/2017 14:09

Yes Jonesy Well some people are not good with the 'deadly nightshade' vegetables which are potatoes, aubergines,I'm trying to remember them all. I know rhubarb is very acid as is 'normal ' tea.

A lot of medics have very little information about nutrition, it could save the NHS a ton of money Grin

I eat lemons and grapefruits because they leave an alkali ash in our gut which is good for us. Oh I just remembered the best remedy for aches and pains which is turmeric , it's brilliant! You can get supplements. Betaine is good for our digestion too.

Gowgirl · 16/03/2017 14:10

I like spam!

stoopido · 16/03/2017 14:13

I would not go near tinned corned beef, it looks disgusting. I remember a neighbour making her husband a tinned corned beef sandwich; it looked vile and I was so surprised people still ate this, I thought it was something people ate during WW2...or was that spam? But I think the deli corned beef looks ok and I would probably opt for that if I were to buy it.
I do remember a friend making me corned beef hash once and it was very nice although I haven't tried to make it myself.

hellsbellsmelons · 16/03/2017 14:14

Corned beef bolognaise - yummy.
Not had it for years but it's great - trust me!

Peppers cannot be saved - ever - any colour [boak]

Tomatoes can be saved as long as you never put them in the fridge.
As Tom Kerridge said - put them on your windowsill for at least a week and don't touch them - then they'll be lovely.
They are much better that way I must admit.

MusicToMyEars800 · 16/03/2017 14:15

I like spam! me too, spam fritters from the chippy are delish Grin

Jux · 16/03/2017 14:17

Peppers are in the nightshade family too. Loads of things which are really nice! I had to give up nightshade stuff when on a course of (stupid) pills my mum bought me - 3 months without most of the veg/fruit I preferred! It was hard!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 16/03/2017 14:19

Corned beef hash in a pie. Food of the gods.

I like tomatoes, never put them in the fridge.

I like oranges too. But ever time I cut one up, the whole family appear to steal a bit. Get your own.

Rice and pasta, meh. Potatoes are good though.

stoopido · 16/03/2017 14:24

I never put tomatoes in the fridge either, they need to be room temp and they must have drizzle of olive oil and salt/pepper on them.

I HATE beansprouts.

GuinessPunch · 16/03/2017 14:29

Noodoodle for brown rice you need to get basmati brown rice rather than the normal one.
