Is it 'common' to smoke on your front step?

LookAtTheFlowersKerry · 14/03/2017 18:30

My mother has spotted my decorative boot ashtray out the front. She is HORRIFIED.

I smoke out the front if it's raining (there's a covered bit, porchy thing). Otherwise I smoke out the back.

My mother says it's terribly low class and my neighbours will all judge me. They normally just say hello tbh, and comment on the shitty weather.

Is she right though? Am I committing a terrible faux pas?

What's worse is that I'm often in my pjs and slippers...

I have a tin wastepaper bin from the 99p shop. It still has the "99p" sticker on it.

I'd like to upgrade to a decorative boot.

dowhatnow · 15/03/2017 12:08

Just nosiness loup Grin

LoupGarou · 15/03/2017 12:12

Ahh, sorry to disappoint then dowhat Grin. Ex is pretty senior in a not usually popular country's military, hence our dog and all our other security. I'm actually quite bring when I'm not cultivating my redneck persona Grin

badabing36 · 15/03/2017 12:12

Kate Middleton smokes. and looks likes she spends a lot of time on sunbeds

LoupGarou · 15/03/2017 12:12

Boring, not bring - stupid autocorrect!

Onthecouchagain · 15/03/2017 12:16

"common" classist mumsnet strikes again.

HappyFlappy · 15/03/2017 12:20

Loup - I almost suggested the chewing tobacco, but as you were already smoking a cigar I wondered if it might be over-egging the pudding. Now I'm not sure that that is even possible, and I suspect that the more "eggs" you add, the more impressive you will be.

Doberman - mmmm Hmm. Possibly a bit too chic . . .

Are her ears cropped and does she have some impressive facial scars?

Is her normal response to anyone saying "Oh what a beautiful dog!" to curl her lip revealing savage rows of broken teeth with bits of human flesh between them? (Or can they not see where she is because of her camouflage collar?)

Has she recently killed and/or eaten a bear?

Has she EVER killed and/or eaten a backpacker, casual migrant worker or tramp?

Does she leave partially skeletonised cadavers (of any species) lying around the yard?

If you can answer "Yes" to three or more of the above, she is probably acceptable as a dog which lowers the tone of the neighbourhood.

If not, I would trade her in for either a pit bull or half a dozen houn' dawgs of uncertain parentage.

Whiterabbitears · 15/03/2017 12:20

A decorative boot you say from Poundland? Right I'm off to get DH one, I will mind far less when he smokes out the front if he had a decorative boot as an ashtray Grin

HappyFlappy · 15/03/2017 12:24

Absolutely Rabbitears.

Style is all! Grin

LoupGarou · 15/03/2017 12:27

Happy yes, I agree, the more eggs the better Grin

Hmmm, nope she doesn't have cropped ears or a docked tail or any scars, she does look very sleek. No, she is very aloof and poker faced with strangers. No, but she has snarled at bears - does that count? Sadly no on the cadavers/backpackers, but we live in a remote part of Alaska, not many backpackers where we are so surely that shouldn't count as a minus?

Nope I concur, she isn't tone lowering. She is sadly very well behaved and not a hooligan. I like the idea of houn' dawgs of uncertain parentage, could be a go-er that idea Grin

dowhatnow · 15/03/2017 12:34

I do think you should put spikes on her collar though. A camouflage one just isn't intimidating enough.

Chinnygirl · 15/03/2017 12:36

Yes it's common. Who cares.

PlymouthMaid1 · 15/03/2017 12:44

I find smoking itself pretty common but although it looks foul, I think smoking on the step is better than smoking indoors.

ThymeLord · 15/03/2017 12:59

I love it when people jump in, on page 7 of an 8 page thread, drop a bomb like "it's common to smoke, full stop", and disappear. The moral judgement sure makes a common councily smoker like me feel saaad. Oh wait, no it doesn't!

LoupGarou · 15/03/2017 12:59

dowhat an excellent suggestion! Grin I don't usually admit I wanted a pink swarovski collar for her Blush but DH and ex told me it was a stupid idea as it undermines how intimidating she looks on the thankfully rare occasions she needs to look intimidating

ThymeLord · 15/03/2017 13:00

Can those of you who feel you are dropping profound truth bombs tell me exactly what is common about smoking?

dowhatnow · 15/03/2017 13:04

Well there is an element of stupidity in burning money, making your self smell all the time and doing something that may possibly kill you - but I am hardly in position to comment given I do things that I know I shouldn't.

Toska · 15/03/2017 13:09

Yes.

Littlelanecountrygirl · 15/03/2017 13:59

User, I'm council I don't think we can be snobbish

Not full council though Wink

SquidgeyMidgey · 15/03/2017 18:23

ThymeLord, to me it makes a person look not very clever (everyone knows the health risks and my non-smoking dad died of a form of lung cancer caused by smoking) and I suppose it reminds me of the types of people I grew up among who smoked and who were, in every possible way, common. That's not me being an imperious bitch, some of them are my best mates, and I don't look down my nose at them but I do worry about their smoking. There are 2 proper Vicky Pollards (they would think that was funny) but I love them to bits and we've been through all sorts together but yes, they look common with a fag in their mouth.

PortiaCastis · 15/03/2017 18:25

I think drinking makes folk look common especially when grown women piss in the gutter

SquidgeyMidgey · 15/03/2017 18:26

That too Portia, sniffing now and clutching pearls Grin

PortiaCastis · 15/03/2017 18:29

My Mum has holiday lets and a couple of weeks ago a woman admitted that she was drunk and pissed on Mums sofa! Mum was not amused and sent a bill for a new sofa as she had to take the pissy one to the tip

FloatyCat · 15/03/2017 21:16

Please ensure you take a can of special brew out with you tooGrin
My mother would think it terribly common I'm afraid.
In my younger smoking days she had a major pearl clutching moment when I told her I had walked through the town centre smoking. That was considered fairly common, but I think you have beaten me!

miniatureegg · 15/03/2017 21:23

Yuck but it's really no one else's business as long as you aren't making them breathe it in too
