Is it 'common' to smoke on your front step?

My mother has spotted my decorative boot ashtray out the front. She is HORRIFIED.

I smoke out the front if it's raining (there's a covered bit, porchy thing). Otherwise I smoke out the back.

My mother says it's terribly low class and my neighbours will all judge me. They normally just say hello tbh, and comment on the shitty weather.

Is she right though? Am I committing a terrible faux pas?

What's worse is that I'm often in my pjs and slippers...

Also wear my pjs. I put a bra on though most of the time

MrsEricBana · 14/03/2017 20:58

Definitely. So what.

paxillin · 14/03/2017 21:02

The Duke of Windsor smoking on his doorstep. No PJs though.

Is it 'common' to smoke on your front step?
Cocopopsrule · 14/03/2017 21:04

Yes. I used to love it.

Plastictattoo · 14/03/2017 21:06

Smoking and drinking out the front is known as 'scroting' round here. I loves it!

LolaTheDarkdestroyer · 14/03/2017 21:12

I wouldn't it looks council, and why would you want to he on full view anyway.

Annesmyth123 · 14/03/2017 21:13

It looks council? 😱

ChippieBeanAndHorro · 14/03/2017 21:13

DH just has just told me that I can't send him and his friends to the front prch when they're smoking (happens maybe twice a year, btw...)

I wonder if it's because he thinks it'a "common" as well? And if he thinks it's common... Then wouldn't him trying to make sure he isn't seen as common make him actually common?

Huh. Complicated stuff.

amy85 · 14/03/2017 21:14

Yup your mother is right

AwaywiththePixies27 · 14/03/2017 21:14

Why would people want to be in full view?

They're having a fag not performing a lapdance complete with nipple tassles. Confused

I say that as someone who hates smoking.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 14/03/2017 21:16

it looks council,

How does one look council? 😂

I live the arse end of the universe on a council estate and I dont smoke and have never done the school run in my PJ's.

See what happens when you stereotype?

AwaywiththePixies27 · 14/03/2017 21:17

If it looks council does that mean the Duke of Windsor in the pic above also looks council? Grin

clairewilliams999 · 14/03/2017 21:41

It lowers the tone of a road for sure

LurpakIstheOnlyButter · 14/03/2017 21:43

I used to do the same. It is vile. And most certainly common. I won't do the preachy bit, you know it and when you are ready you will!

HeteronormativeHaybales · 14/03/2017 21:50

Smoking in general = yuck, smoking in pyjamas = double yuck, smoking out the front = can't get aerated, at least you're not smoking inside.

Tbh, I do agree with the PP who said smoking itself is common really. But WTF does 'looks council' even mean? Hmm

Capricorn76 · 14/03/2017 21:59

Tbh I'd judge my arse off. I could even imagine that it would make neighbouring houses harder to sell. Imagine going for a viewing only to see fag ash lil in her onsie on her doorstep with fag in hand.

ButtercupChain · 14/03/2017 22:04

It looks council PMSL! Grin

The duke up there looks cool, like the 40's and 50's film stars used to (male and female) when they were smoking. But it does just seem like such a chavvy pastime now. Along with eating shitty junk food. It's like that MP who said once that lower class people don't know how to cook proper healthy food, and she was lambasted, but it's true.

Sorry I know that's horribly judgemental. Blush

slaps own face with a wet fish.

theothercatpurred · 14/03/2017 22:07

Stillwishihadabs was that question to me?

I dunno - he must be I guess!
Yup, he does it in winter!
We do live in the south though so it's relatively mild here.

He wears his dressing gown now if he goes out the front, after I asked him 20 times to please stop scaring the neighbours.

Most of them wouldn't care, I imagine. But I can see some people quite understandable IMO being intimidated or uncomfortable by a huge unshaven man just in pants. They don't know he's lovely really just by looking at him, do they?

sooperdooper · 14/03/2017 22:11

Loads of our neighbours smoke out the front and I bloody hate it, yep it's common and if that makes me a snob I couldn't care less - smoke in your garden!!

It means we can't have the front windows open in summer as well cos it stinks Angry

Hogs · 14/03/2017 22:16

I've stopped lurking to tell you all that I am right now on my door step, in my pj bottoms (and a jumper), with a glass of wine, smoking AND I live on a council estate.

(But I do have a PhD. Am I "Council" enough?) ;)

Hi Mumsnet, btw - sorry this is my debut post!

twattymctwatterson · 14/03/2017 22:18

Oh and btw, only the Hyacinth Bucket's of the world care about people being common. People with real class couldn't give a fuck

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 14/03/2017 22:24

Back door
Only OP - so common Grin

It's the pajamas that are the cherry on the cake !

DJBaggySmalls · 14/03/2017 22:26

Bring her round my place on a Sunday morning and she can tut at the neighbors leaving the ketchup bottle outside on the window ledge.

BadLad · 14/03/2017 22:29

How does one look council?

Our cat had kittens last year. One of them looked a bit council, so I drowned it. Kindest thing to do really. I wish I'd taken a picture, so I could show you what looking council is. I'll PM you if it happens again - the ol' girl's still got a few more litters in her yet.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 14/03/2017 22:32

BadLad if your cat gets up the duff again this quickly then she's most definitely council looking innit! Wink

But yes do PM me so I can help you find forever homes for them I'll take ten, I can fit five in each pocket .
