Is it 'common' to smoke on your front step?

My mother has spotted my decorative boot ashtray out the front. She is HORRIFIED.

I smoke out the front if it's raining (there's a covered bit, porchy thing). Otherwise I smoke out the back.

My mother says it's terribly low class and my neighbours will all judge me. They normally just say hello tbh, and comment on the shitty weather.

Is she right though? Am I committing a terrible faux pas?

What's worse is that I'm often in my pjs and slippers...

It can't be common if Carrie Bradshaw did it!

I tend to find that older folk are much more tolerant if smoking, seeing it as a sign of character Grin Also better than smoking indoors, Shirley? ??

alltouchedout · 14/03/2017 19:50

I do it sometimes. Dh does. My neighbours on one side do. If the dc are playing in the backyard or its summer and we have the back door open or similar it seems much the better option.

Stillwishihadabs · 14/03/2017 19:50

I see people doing this on my way to work, I do judge but mainly that they havent bothered to get dressed. I have worn nightwear outside once in my life, it was 3am and I had given birth 2 hours previously i was being discharged from hospital. Otherwise i always get dressed to go outside not to bother looks like you dont care.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 14/03/2017 19:52

Ita better than swigging a can of Fosters in your jammies.

Patriciathestripper1 · 14/03/2017 19:53

Wafts fan Blush you have a decorative boot ashtray? I'm clenching for you my dear....

Patriciathestripper1 · 14/03/2017 19:54

GreyStars · 14/03/2017 19:55

That's what I found during a quick google search. why that was one of the top hits I'm not sure.Confused

Why does he stop her from a little evil like smoking in public when there is a greater, a viler, a more scandalizing evil, which he can and should remedy — mighty and gifted lawmaker that he is! — and that is drinking in public?

twattymctwatterson · 14/03/2017 20:00

It's so depressing that people still refer to other people as "common" in this day and age

CheesyChristie · 14/03/2017 20:00

I'm from a naice little town in the Westcountry. DH is from a pretty grim, deprived Northern town. The first time he took me there to meet his parents I commented that it was really pretty and not at all as rough as he'd made out. At that moment a bloke in just his boxers opened his front door, fag in mouth and did a piss on his own front door step (luckily it wasn't FIL).

As long as you're not doing that I'd say it's fine.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 14/03/2017 20:01

Along with trampolines, barbecues, and designer clothing, smoking has been adopted by chavs.

Our neighbours just bought their house. Apparently the EA told them a trampoline would look chavvy and wouldn't sell as well. It was replaced by a football goal instead and they still cant find a buyer. But I think it's more to do with the fact you couldn't pay any sensible person to live in this area rather than it bring trampolines!

AwaywiththePixies27 · 14/03/2017 20:03

To the PP who mentioned it wouldn't affdcg them because they were outside. It depends on the proximity.

I most definitely got a couple of mouthfuls of the mans vapey thingy cloud at the bus stop this morning. It stunk. 🙈

Honeybee79 · 14/03/2017 20:04

I would think good for you for not smoking in the house. I don't smoke but often sit and have a cuppa or beer on my front step!

AwaywiththePixies27 · 14/03/2017 20:05

*affect not affdcg

Birdsbeesandtrees · 14/03/2017 20:05

Yes. Back garden or out the bedroom window like a teenager only.

theothercatpurred · 14/03/2017 20:08

I don't smoke anymore but used to love sitting on the area watching the world go by while having a smoke. My mum disapproved, I'm pretty sure because she worried people would think it "not respectable".

pictish · 14/03/2017 20:08

"It's so depressing that people still refer to other people as "common" in this day and age"

But how else are they to glean a sense of superiority over other people to fill the hole in their soul?

ellash · 14/03/2017 20:10

I went to pick something up I bought off someone at the weekend.
Inside their home it was grimy, ashtrays everywhere and children running about in just their pants.

The fact that they smoked indoors with their children disgusted me and needless to say I did not purchase item from seller.

You're smoking outdoors. You're keeping your home nice and not making any visitors or children (if you have any) endure your habit.

Good for you. Ignore your mum. Sounds like you have a lot of pride in your home

Marmalade85 · 14/03/2017 20:12

Do you wear a fluffy dressing gown?

BabychamSocialist · 14/03/2017 20:15

As an aside, in regards to bedwear outdoors, the best insult I've ever heard on the playground in 20 years of teaching is, "Yer mam goes the chippy in her slippers!"

theothercatpurred · 14/03/2017 20:19

I only realised about 6 months ago that DP regularly smokes on the doorstep in his pants! (And tshirt). We've been here 4 years I can't believe he'a been doing it all this time and I only just noticed! Shock

I do draw the line at that!

I told him he needs to smoke in the garden if in his pants or he'll make women in particular feel pretty uncomfortable. He hadn't considered that at all, apparently.

Stillwishihadabs · 14/03/2017 20:22

How is he not cold ?

BBCNewsRave · 14/03/2017 20:48

My neighbours used to do this, and I suffered an extreme judgey pants wedgie for months. That was because they were pregnant/with newborns, small children, and yakking away REALLY LOUDLY on what was basically my front step, due to the housing layout. And chucking their fag ends in my garden! They never wore pj's but that would be irrelevant really.

OTOH another neighbour has a quiet smoke on her step in the morning, in her dressing gown, and says a polite hello if I'm passing. No judging there. I don't give a toss about the pj's or smoking, it's the stuff that affects others that bothers me.

theothercat I don't smoke anymore but used to love sitting on the area watching the world go by while having a smoke.

Yes, exactly. This thread is making me miss smoking!

Chamonix1 · 14/03/2017 20:52

I'm common as muck then.
Nothing like a cup of tea, sat on my front step with a cigarette.

Not that I do now I've quit but I envy you
