or at some point this month?

And I know there is a EU board tucked away somewhere but I'm interested in everyone's views.

OP posts:
Flumpernickel · 13/03/2017 22:04

And to be honest, If you had come here from eastern europe, from a country that pays way less for similar work and were living in a shared house, and unaware of your employment rights, you are hardly going to make a huge deal out of being slightly underpaid for hours/breaks/holidays worked etc... are you?

GreenPeppers · 13/03/2017 22:05

flump pret and the like are NOT paying less than the minimum wage.
Nor are the carers agencies I know. One in particular is paying very well for that sort of jobs and isn't asking for stupid things (such as not paying for the travel from one client to the next despite them being miles away from each other)
They still can't find people to do the jobs.

I am in an area with higher unemployment too so you would think people would really want to go for those jobs too....

Flumpernickel · 13/03/2017 22:06

Just to be very very clear Green. At NO point did I suggest or state that Pret were under paying staff, I was talking in general terms.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 13/03/2017 22:08

Breaks are rarely counted in retail and hospitality nowadays

Bit sad really...seems to be a race to the bottom

Seems to be fairly british in the chain coffee shops here and i would suspect that they are all similar pay and condition wise

I would agree that places like car washes and fruit and veg picking places and carers the opportunity to rip workers off would be much higher

Flumpernickel · 13/03/2017 22:08

Badders that's nice dear.

GreenPeppers · 13/03/2017 22:08

You are having lots of very preconceived ideas about Eastern European though. The ones I know know very well what is and isn't legal.

Butbthey are still happy to take the chance. For example by starting with a crap job that ant paid as it shouod but with the idea that they will do that for a year until they are really fluent in English and then apply for better paid job, more in line with their initial training.
That means you have people working for. Couple of years with degrees and the likes for less than the min wage. They know it. Butbthey do it for a reason. And those are also the people that five years down the line have excellent jobs and are well paid.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 13/03/2017 22:08

Sorry flump

I brought up pret because that was what the article was referring to

Pleasejustgetdressed · 13/03/2017 22:08

Very sad. We're careering into a stupid stupid mistake.

Badders123 · 13/03/2017 22:09

Seen Liam foxs comments re workers rights?

😳

MarasmeAbsolu · 13/03/2017 22:09

well - you can all have my job
we're on our way out

PennyPickle · 13/03/2017 22:10

*The UK cannot be any worse off than we were under the EU regime

Of course it bloody can*

Please impart what you know to be true

GreenPeppers · 13/03/2017 22:11

And to be very very clear, in general terms in the hospitality service and in the caring sector, it is near impossible to find British people to do those jobs. They do NOT apply for them.

You might want to think that it's because the pay is too poor, working conditions not good enough etc...
I will argue that they are able to find jobs that are more to their liking, not as harsh physically so do not need to do that. Thats not going to change.

Btw I hope you appreciate that it is possible to cross post and that maybe, only maybe, I wasn't actually having a go at you??

Flumpernickel · 13/03/2017 22:11

rufus no problem Wink

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 13/03/2017 22:13

Not yet badders

Is it what he said last year

MakemineaGandT · 13/03/2017 22:13

I feel sick, extremely anxious, angry and despairing.

I can't believe this car crash is happening. I can't see anything good about it at all.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 13/03/2017 22:13

Thanks flump

Flumpernickel · 13/03/2017 22:15

No need to be defensive green I havent attacked you, merely made it clear that I am not making specific and unfounded statements about the very large company pret. Wink

Where I live it seems to be different regarding employment demographics in these jobs, but I guess we will have to just agree to differ here.

MiladyThesaurus · 13/03/2017 22:15

I feel utterly disaffected, frankly.

I'm embarrassed by the UK and utterly fucking fed up with the whole thing.

I completely despair of alll this 'will of the people' bullshit.

I hope the future version of GCSE history students enjoy writing essays on what a utter fuckwit David Cameron was.

GreenPeppers · 13/03/2017 22:16

badders is that the article you are referring to
Workers rights can be remobed

Somin effect, when we will be out of the EU, it will be OK to stop having all those rights for workers such as a right to have paid break, holidays etc.. as we will finally be out of the EU imposing on us all those horrible things.
Yep, I'm sure that the working conditions will improve in the process...

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 13/03/2017 22:18

I am really sorry

People keep saying paid breaks

Loads of people dont have paid breaks

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 13/03/2017 22:19

I want a paid break

Badders123 · 13/03/2017 22:20

Yep
Paid maternity pay will go
Ditto paternity pay
A la the U.S.

What a clusterfuck

misomiso · 13/03/2017 22:20

Why don't you have a paid break?

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 13/03/2017 22:22

mis

Rest breaks at work. Workers have the right to one uninterrupted 20 minute rest break during their working day, if they work more than 6 hours a day. This could be a tea or lunch break. The break doesn't have to be paid - it depends on their employment contract.

I can have a break if i am there long enough...just not paid

Lifegavemelemons · 13/03/2017 22:23

I'm fucking furious. My rights to free movement and my rights as a European are been taken from me. More importantly, for me, my dc, who were born as citizens of Europe, and who have taken that for granted, are about to have their rights removed. They are gutted. We have family with European partners who are living in Europe, my dc have a cousin with a European partner living here. Our whole family is being plunged into uncertainty.

I've been looking at property in Scotland. I don't want to leave my life here in England, but I honestly think the future is very bleak.
