And I know there is a EU board tucked away somewhere but I'm interested in everyone's views.

OP posts:
GhostofFrankGrimes · 13/03/2017 21:32

its ok those jobs are well known for good pay/pensions, strong unions etc. Seasonal work picking spuds is sure to pay the mortgage Hmm

Flumpernickel · 13/03/2017 21:34

Oh... I see, what you are saying is that we brits are above these lowly jobs, therefore we should wholesale import and underpay other human beings (Read EU nationals) to do them for us instead? Is that correct? Is that why we should stay in the EU? Because you just cant get the 'help' in the uk? Hmm

Jazzywazzydodah · 13/03/2017 21:35

As if honestly we really have a say in what happens??

Juncker is the worst example of the EU and I can't believe people are happy to him still lead. He is the EU equivalent of Nigel F.

While every one is chicken heading about Brexit - no one is really looking hard enough at what the Tories are doing to our country. They are stripping away at our society and folk are too busy throttling each other to really notice.

The EU wouldn't have helped us - look st the other countries gone to shit and no help of EU.

Britain has one of the highest numbers of missing children that are supposed to be in care to the point a meeting was held at UNICEF and still nothing is done. The EU does not care about British people. Don't be fooled in to thinking it does.

ImNotWhoYouThinkIAmOhNo · 13/03/2017 21:35

Was gutted on 24 June.
Still gutted.
And don't get me started on Nicola Sturgeon!!!

GhostofFrankGrimes · 13/03/2017 21:36

no. Leaving the EU is not going to solve the problems of low pay and poor conditions, unaffordable housing only make things much worse. There is no land of milk and honey.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/03/2017 21:37

I agree KillDora

Many and most would have voted Labour 20 years ago, many felt let down when for others it was getting better it got worse the same under a coalition government and worse still under the Tories and then they are given then chance for a change a real change and they took it

The most foolish of all are those in power who didn't see this coming those who represent their voters yet were so out of touch most didn't think of objecting to a referendum or give much thought to what would happen if we did vote to leave

The mistrust of those ruling through there own incompetence the broken promises, ignoring voters concerns about immigration. so many MP's openly cheating the system, looking after the bankers yet allowing the NHS the reach breaking point

I doubt many voters believed the lies why would they when they felt they had been lied to so many times before

GhostofFrankGrimes · 13/03/2017 21:38

The EU does not care about British people. Don't be fooled in to thinking it does.

oh its the big bad evil EU again. Let us all embrace the warm bosom of the Conservative party Hmm

Cartright · 13/03/2017 21:40

KillDora

I agree with that. There was massive arrogance on the side of the Remain campaign, and a cynical stirring up of xenophobia by the Leave campaign. Maybe we got the campaign we deserved as an electorate, because we didn't ask for better. The sad truth is that the poorest are likely to suffer most from this decision.

Downtheroadfirstonleft

I hope you're right, but I already know very able people leaving the UK because of Brexit - they're concerned about the loss of EU funding for research (Horizon 2020 funding is a significant part of the UK research budget) and they're thinking, 'why wait to be chucked out,'. If I were a EU researcher or academic and could get another job, I wouldn't be hanging about to see if it were all just a bluff by the UK Gov't.

Badders123 · 13/03/2017 21:41

No....

Simply asking who is going to do these jobs when the EU workers leave?

It takes time to train teachers, Drs, nurses, carers, nursery staff etc

Where are they going to come from!?

Applications for nursing from EU down 90%
Nursing bursaries gone

I ask again, where are these workers going to come from?

Commonwealth countries?
Im sure frothing leave voters would love that!

Badders123 · 13/03/2017 21:43

I know two GPs who have emigrated

Know plenty more who are planning to

Where do we get their replacements from?

Seriously?

Where?

PageNowFoundFileUnderSpartacus · 13/03/2017 21:44

While every one is chicken heading about Brexit - no one is really looking hard enough at what the Tories are doing to our country. They are stripping away at our society and folk are too busy throttling each other to really notice.

^^This. There have been too many good days for the Tories to bury bad news thanks to Brexit. What they're doing to the disabled while everyone's looking the other way is nothing short of inhumane.

PageNowFoundFileUnderSpartacus · 13/03/2017 21:45

That's not to say I agree with the rest of the post, but that point is spot on.

Flumpernickel · 13/03/2017 21:47

Dont move the goalposts Badders, you were originally talking about macchiatos, cleaners and wiping arses, not GPs. I guess its only when you read back that you realise how prejudiced your post regarding EU nationals was? Better throw in some token GPs for balance eh?

GreenPeppers · 13/03/2017 21:48

flum did you see that article from a big chain of coffee. They were saying that 70% of applicants were non British. British people simply do not apply for those jobs.
Same in the caring professions. I know some people who are desperately trying to employ carers. They can't find any, let alone some British people.

Of course, some British people will do those jobs.
But at the moment, they aren't done by British people.
If you take away those eu citizens that are doing those jobs, you need to find other people to replace it. Do you think it will be possible to find about 2milluions (?) British people to replace them.
Not only there is an issue with numbers but also about training and experience and simply willingness to do the job (caring and working to pick fruits and begs being known to be physically hard so not what people are choosing to do iyswim)

GreenPeppers · 13/03/2017 21:50

I fully agree page
The current government is using Brexit to conduct change that would never go through in normal circumstances.
I'm sure that people who voted Leave or remain never voted for that.
And nor did the people who voted conservatives in the last GE...

Flumpernickel · 13/03/2017 21:52

Green peppers. No vested interest there for the big chains of course... employing people from outside the UK, that can be easily exploited for less than minimum wage, couldnt possibly encourage these chains to skew the statistics to suit their bottom line at all no?

Badders123 · 13/03/2017 21:52

Eh?

Maybe where you live British nationals work in coffee shops and clean people's houses and work in care homes but where I live it's mostly EU nationals and Phillipinos

I ask you again - where are these >2 million workers going to come from?

RortyCrankle · 13/03/2017 21:53

I am:

thrilled
delighted
ecstatic
happy
relieved
elated
overjoyed
excited
jubilant
pleased
joyful

I think you get the picture Grin

Flumpernickel · 13/03/2017 21:55

Yes Badders, where I live, (no longer the southeast) that is indeed the case, in the same way that it was 15-20 years ago in the southeast when myself and many of my peers were doing these very same jobs.

Badders123 · 13/03/2017 21:58

I've done care work - And been paid £2.50 an hour for doing so.
Ive cleaned houses
I've done Bar work
I've done Restaurant work
I've done retail work

They were all pretty crappy jobs (with horrible bosses and unpleasant customers) and not ones I would like for my children

But I guess that just makes me an elitist snowflake 🙄

Flumpernickel · 13/03/2017 21:59

Does it badders? I dont know... I didnt call you that, but if it makes you feel more comfortable then please feel free to indulge yourself.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 13/03/2017 21:59

flump

I doubt pret is paying less than minimum wage

And if they are they should be grassed up

Flumpernickel · 13/03/2017 22:01

Would they rufus? Its not always done in the most obvious way... it can be holiday pay and hours worked, breaks not counted etc...

Please lets not assume that big corporations are always interested in fairness. (Cant speak for pret specifically)

Badders123 · 13/03/2017 22:03

In fact I would argue that the success of the leave campaign and trumps campaign in the US are a direct result that for the first time in generations parents are realising that their children's lives will not be better than theirs.

Instead of blaming austerity measures and years of de-funding of the NHS and education and the propping up of the housing market in 2008 they blame....who?

Badders123 · 13/03/2017 22:04

Oh don't worry I'm going to crochet myself a snowflake badge

An elitist one obv
