Pantene - It's PAN-TEN surely? Not PAN-TEEN as per this glam old ad.

I asked the lady in the L'Occitane shop how it was pronounced and she said loxitan

It is just the North American pronunciation.

Another example, Persil detergent has just been launched over there. We say Pur-sul, they say Pur-seal and the ending sounds really pronounces as in seeeeal - sounds wrong Grin.

There are loads of brands that are pronounced differently/wrong. Miele is a good one; from meal to mee-lay (it's mee-ler).

Best one (and had it hundereds of times in the course of my job), the phone brand Huawei (you'd expect it to be Hu-way/hu-wai), I asked the manufacturers when they were in the office, it's wow-wee but add a h sound just before saying the wow.

I thought I was the only one that called it that apart from my family Supercue!

Do you live near one of their factories?

How about Moët?!?

I feel silly saying it how it should be said!

Poor working class London upbringing fee, no chocolate factories unfortunately.

I always thought chicco was pronounced cheeko. However on the ad the other night they said kiko.

fee nestle was always based as head office in south London. A mike from the paynes poppers/just Brazils factory. And if the wind was blowing in the right direction you could smell chocolate. Sadly it's gone now and made way for posh car dealerships.

There's a rental agent that pronounces their name (Belvoir) as Bell-vwarr instead of Beaver.

Ralph Lauren is one of my faves
My friend has called her dog Lauren after the designer but pronounces it lor REN
Not Lauren like you'd pronounce the girls name Lauren
That's the correct way it should be pronounced
You can't tell her though she's convinced it's lor REN to rhyme with pen

Preemark for me. The alternative in the local accent is so horrendous as to induce nightmares. Prarmark anyone?

Ralph Lauren does rhyme with pen, though. Lhor-ren (with a roll on the R) as it's French.

I thought Pantene had a grave accent on the first e, make it ten, not teen, but Americans pronounce European languages all kinds of weird (and I live in the US) so I no longer have a clue how any 'foreign' looking word is said.

Apparently, Primark in Ireland was known as Pree-mark

No, it never was, it has always been Penneys. It only changed for the UK market.

Ikea is -ih-kay-a.
chicco is kee-koh
lidl is lee-dle.

Your friend is correct. It's a French name. The pronunication of 'Lorrun' as in the girl's name is an incorrect Anglicisation.

How do you pronounce Saucony?!

A PP mentioned it and it has been bugging me for years. Kinsey Millhone wears them and althought the books tell you how to pronounce her surname, I dont know how to pronounce her chosen brand of trainers!

Panteen in Australia too. They don't do French over here, so the accent on the first e means nothing.

Sock-a-knee?

In my head I have pronounced that many different ways, but that wasnt one of them so thank you. Is that sock in the UK was of saying it rather than the US accented sock (sahrk)?

I was going to say that that makes no sense, but then I thought about all the words in the UK that have no correlation between spelling and saying....and so I didnt!

Primark in Ireland is called Dunnes isn't it?
No - it's Penney's. Dunnes is a different kettle of fish altogether.

I call Pantene 'Panteen', and I did French.

Also 'PRY-mark', ALL-dee, I-KEE-a.
